Can I just point out, here in Great Britain, we call Christmas, Christmas, as it should be, not " the holiday season " we say " Happy Christmas " not " happy holidays ". No offence meant to your good self, I just think happy holidays means nothing at Christmas time. 😊

Coming from lifelong depression, I know that a really good cry can release HUGE amounts of stress. Even if she didn't recognize it, that relief could be one of the reasons she favoured funerals as one of the mourners.

Bullied in both school, and the town, and I wouldn't be surprised if she at first began going to funerals as a way to escape all the hard work at home. What she did was wrong, but her life seems to have overall been quite miserable.

She was obviously mentally unstable. She didn't even bat an eye when confessing to the poisoning her family which killed some of them. But she also tried to implicate her ex lover, so some of that might have been an act to try to get a lesser sentence. It's a good thing she spent the rest of her life in prison, no telling how many more people she would've killed. Thank you for another very interesting story Brief Case.

It's absolutely wild to me that grown adults in Martha's neighborhood thought it was perfectly acceptable to pick on a kid for her looks. Between that and her family having the power to pressure her, as a middle-aged adult, to dump a rare person who actually made her happy, and it's no wonder she turned out the way she did.
@StacyL.
@StacyL. 7 ай бұрын
What a story! It just seemed like the perfect storm for Martha-- The disdain for her family because they didn't like that she was with Walter after the death of Albert, her fixation on attending funerals, and then taking it to the next level, poisoning her family. She had a compulsion for funerals, and a motive for wanting them unalive anyway. I tried doing some research on her specific compulsion to attend funerals, and the only thing I found was an OCD diagnosis. What a sad case and a great example of wasted life. Something in Martha snapped early on, but was unfortunately "undo-able" after her marriage to Albert. He treated her harshly, then was told to give up Walter. She just, snapped.
@coolbeanz9145

It would make sense in my mind that there would be different "levels" of OCD. For example, a few years ago I was in septic shock due to a bowel perforation. When all was said and done, I discovered little OCD type things. Like when I shower, I have a specific order in which I MUST do it, or else I have to start over because if I don't, I feel as tho I haven't showered at all. This doesn't rise to what Mrs. Wise did, but I can see certain obsessive compulsions causing a person's mind to "crack". Not excusing what she did, as there are no excuses for straight up murder, but I feel like maybe OCD isn't too far off the mark. I'm sure there were other mental issues involved with her as well. I just thought I'd toss my two cents in here.

What a strange case, but then a number of your presentations have a twist or turn to them. This one was a mixture of social outcast, arsenic poisoner serial killer, and wacko case pointing to the dilemma of what to do with people like Martha Wise. Thanks for pointing out the tradition they had, that of holding community social gatherings that were common during the latter part of the 19th century in which individuals baked goods and placed them in a box to auction off. I wonder if the harsh life she had as a child growing up plus the bullying then as she became a young woman in love finding that her life was still harsh and over work that this had something to do with the funerals. Rather then go to the movies - which at that time was very cheap but, still expensive for her family - she looked for something that took her away from the farm and drudgery for a few hours that she found the funerals as respite. I also wonder if her family pressuring her to dump her boyfriend had some part in the poisoning. She was very attractive, close to 40, with 4 kids to feed and finding her boyfriend was a bit of happiness for her. but, the pressure of the family became too much and she alone, poor and having to work the farm and house chores by herself. there had to be resentment to a degree.

With any murderer it’s never right to ignore the tragedy of the victims. Still there is something about Martha that is desperately sad. It seems that losing Walter pushed her over the edge. Perhaps she was bitter that Walter didn’t fight harder to marry her, maybe that’s why she falsely accused him of being complicit in her crimes. You can’t really blame her family for not wanting to care for her after her release, not only would it have been hard to come to terms with her actions but after so many years apart she would have been a stranger to them.

This case makes me wonder when they ban or made it harder to get Arsenic, since so many murder cases were eventually discovered to be the result of Arsenic poisoning. I feel sorry for Martha. Such a hard unrelenting reality for her without, it seems, any sort of joy or fun. I can understand why she wanted to get rid of some family members. I Do Not Condone It, however. Such judgemental people surrounded her, whom were probably professed Christians, did nothing to help her live out her remaining years in some sort of peace. People can be awful sometimes. In the end she didn't get away with the murders, which is good. Thanks BC for another sad, but interesting case.

I don't consider it judgemental to not want a poisoner at your dinner table

I have pity for the woman, but I completely understand and condone her remaining family members shunning her. In the end, she went back to where she belonged. It's one thing if she'd been remorseful, but it seems like she thought that her reason for putting her family through such agony was valid. Even insurance money makes more sense than her insane desires. Thank you for another grand retelling.

Good morning, This was a very strange case. I would like to think that she was suffering from some type of mental illness.. I find it quite strange for her just to show up at a funeral of someone that she doesn’t know and burst into tears makes me feel something was going on. It made me think about her husband if she actually killed him as well, but they didn’t talk about his death. They basically talked about her mother as well as her children and other family members. I can’t imagine, going into court and having to testify against my mother for poisoning me. But she did pay her debt to society , and I think it’s pretty sad at the age of 79 when she was let out of prison, there was no place for her to go. The only place she knew was prison and even at that age I know family members would find it hard to take her in. I guess her family either couldn’t forgive her or just couldn’t take her in. The only thing that I could think of is that she died in prison and alone with no one around her but again, what she did to the people in her family was wrong. I know we’re supposed to forgive people for the things that they sometimes do but sometimes people can’t and it seems that way in her case. Have a wonderful week and looking forward to next Monday as usual Bless🙏🏽

BC- you were almost in my backyard. I live about 2hrs from Medina. The look in Martha’s eyes seems evil to me. I’ve noticed that serial killers have that same look in their eyes. I don’t understand how anyone could poison someone with arsenic. It is the most painful experience when dying. I guess she liked seeing them struggle and be in pain. Martha is a special kind of twisted😂. Thank you so much BC. I so love you and I so appreciate your every effort to bring us these cases.

I couldn't help but thinking of the movie Harold & Maude and Maude's quirky obsession of going to strangers' funerals, lol. However, Maude never murdered anyone, so there's that....
