Some of you have quested I give you some norwegian name info. So here are the top 10 girls and boys names from 2008 and 1880! :) Hey all Norwegian learners!
The language I'm teaching is not Bokmål nor Nynorsk. It's an east dialect and I don't think you will have much problem with bokmål after this. :) And everyone will understand this.
I am Norwegian, from Norway. Born and raised. I live in Oslo, with my husband and son.
---------------------------------------
I started filming with my webcam. Then i moved on to a Flip, then a Flip Mino HD. Then followed my iPhone, and Now I have a Panasonic HC-V210 :)
I edit with Vegas Pro.
---------------------------------------
Extra info about some of the videos is found here:
karinawinnem.com/youtube
- This is also my norwegian blog. To get everything in one place!

Thank you to all subscribers, you are too sweet :) seriously, i love you!

Just came across your videos today. So glad I found them. I am American, but my grandmother's parents emigrated from Trondheim. Their names were Elef and Emma Sandro. And my grandmother's grandmother's name was Guri. I'm very interested in learning the language so I have a feeling I'll be spending a portion of my day watching your videos. :)

Karin, thank you so much! In 2019 I traveled from the U.S. East Coast where I live, to my third-generation Norwegian relatives in northeast North Dakota. Specifically, I asked my Great Uncle's son "what is your Aunt's name? " He said "Ida" with a long i sound, rhymes with English 'eye' or 'try'. But on her monogram which I have, her name is spelled "Eda". Your video sheds light on the Norse letter 'i' for Ida being pronounced as a long E. In American English, "Ida" is pronounced with long I, and Eda is pronounced as "ee" rhymes with tree. You have helped to solve the puzzle of her monogram "E". Thank you!!

Emma, Sara, Thea, Ida, Sofie, Lea, Julie, Lukas, Anna, Marie, Karen, Anne, Karoline, Kristine, Mathias, Markus, Emil, Kristian, Jonas, Magnus, Oliver, Tobias, Alexander, Ole, Johan, Karl, Peter, Hans, Niels, Martin and Lars are all more or less common in Denmark. ^^ Ingrid, Ingeborg, Inge, Marta, Johanne and Peder have also been. ^^ I've never heard about Kjersti. :D ... My Dads Maternal Grandfather was born Alfred Marius Johansen on December 7, 1899, in Norway. He came to Ontario, Canada in 1927 & later died in 1953 of Leukemia at the age of 53, when my Dad was a baby. I was told by the Library in Norway that his name Alfred M. Johnson-Vold that was written on his immigration papers was just a name that he used to come to Canada, & Alfred Marius Johansen was his real name. Alfred Johansen Wold was the name that he went by all his years here in Ontario, Canada. His real surname of Johansen was surprising to us, as we were not aware of the Farmers Name thing that Norway used then. Therefore, for close to a decade, I was looking for Wold or Vold relatives; when I should have been looking for Johansen relatives. His father was Alerth Marius Johansen & his mother was Anna Marie Gullowa Eriksen. Not sure how you say any of these names in Norway.

So, my last name would be pronounced something like "yew-nas-sen," I gather? I thought I'd go my whole life without ever hearing it pronounced correctly. I've seen it re-interpreted in many different ways, but never a clear example of the root sound. I'm surprised, but actually quite glad to see this has been covered. In the U.S., my family lost its grip on the old language a couple of generations ago, and to fit in here, they decided to pronounce it more like Johnson with an extra "ah" in the middle, because that's a common and apparently wholesome sounding American name -- sort of John-a-sen. However, that's always confused people, and no one spells it correctly, which has made we want to know the real way. Now that just leaves my middle name, plus sounding the whole thing out with the numeral for "the fourth." In the meantime, I'll definitely be browsing this course and others from the beginning. There seems like plenty to go through, so thanks for all the effort and for keeping these videos accessible.

Thank you! Or I should say, "Takk!" going by your playlist on the basics. I plan to tell my dad about that when I see him next week, because he's never quite known how to say it either. We do know some meanings, such as names meaning "son of ..." and even a bit of our history. It's mainly context and pronunciation that are a problem, where seeing it in writing only goes so far. Hearing it from a real person is much better, though money for travel and things like that are a different story. I'm sure you've heard those stories before. As I've looked at your work, I find that if I keep repeating and don't over-think, the sounds start to come out naturally. I've tried before only to feel intimidated, but at least your examples are far less scary. The shapes of words feel very new, almost more like singing than speaking. I've studied French and Spanish, but would have to describe the way this feels as more full-bodied -- it's like it comes from the chest to say your words properly. Then, of course, is the matter of vocabulary and grammar, but I'm happy just to hear the easy stuff for now. It's rare to find a Norwegian who doesn't use English in my area, anyway (I mean if they _ever_ get around to Florida), or who doesn't look at you crazy for asking questions like, "How do I say my name?" Most think it's enough of a crime, simply, that you can't ski (except on water) and have never seen the snow. ;) I usually use google/gmail these days, but I'll be sure to give you a like, share, subscribe, and perhaps reach out through facebook. The way you help is almost too nice, so don't feel obligated to do any special favors on my behalf! Thanks again, and in the meantime, take care.
