You're complaining that a movie about the apocalypse looks too dark and severe? I mean, seriously?

Not really. I live in a typical suburban city. It just happened to be playing in a couple of places.

I enjoyed your review but I have to totally disagree with you on the comment about the ending. I think the ending took the film out of the doom and gloom and gave us a bit of hope which was needed for a post-appocalyptic movie. I absolutely loved the movie but I do understand that nothing happens throughout the movie which is overly interesting. But taken as a whole, this is one of the most beautiful films I have seen in a while.

I was actually thinking of doing that. I really love the oldies much more than the current stuff. Since christmas is coming up, I might do a review on some of my favorites. If u have any suggestions u r welcome to share. :)

I did have a few minor quips with the film (the passing of time was off, the movie felt like it took place over 2 days), but I would say that this is probably my favorite film of 2009. The film's score brings a tear to my eye. Beautiful. Anyhoo, I enjoyed listening to your review. It's nice hearing the thoughts of someone who has seen the movie. And sorry if it sounds like I'm rambling. I'm still geeking out over this movie. Haha.

If I were doing a written review I would go into a lot of detail. However this is just a snippet where I cover just the main points. I treat the youtube reviews differently than I would an essay.

I freaking loved this film. It's just about impossible to translate McCarthy's prose, especially with a novel like The Road, into images, but I think that the director did an amazing job in portraying the hopeless, colorless tone of the novel. And more importantly, he nailed relationship and loving bond between The Man and The Boy correct. So many heartbreaking scenes, and I think that Viggo's performance kicked so much ass in this.

The scene with the Eaters was like something directly from the Dies The Fire book. Mike Havel: good guy, ace pilot, helped to, "keep the fire alive."

I've ordered the road on blu Ray can't wait to watch it. No country for old men was great but the ending was an anticlimax. There should have been a better battle between the 2 main characters.

I see what ur saying about the tone. But in Private Ryan and Traffic, it wasnt as pungeant and severe. This one was too much for me. I didnt like it but hey thats just my opinion. Oh and thank u. I would love to do more old songs. Im a pretty picky about that stuff. I still need to find a good song and practice it a little. But yeah hopefully over christmas. :D

I thought the ending was the best way it could have ended. It was a happy and realistic ending that didn't demand much suspension of disbelief. What is your ideal ending for the movie?
@CEWIII9873

Yeah, in the world of The Road, the ending on the balance of probabilities could have been darker (maybe should have been), but I understand that it wanted to end on a hopeful note since the film was discussing the breakdown of humanity.

I really disagree! I mean, I am a huge fan of beautiful quiet moments, but... it so wasn't what was needed here. To me the whole idea was that there wasn't quiet moments - you always had to be on guard, otherwise you might not survive. I think that was par of what made the movie so incredibly intense - another thing I disagree with you on. I think it's the most intense movie I have ever seen of it's kind. And I loved the landscape! To me they really showed how life had just kind of stopped.

His books are also beautiful in their burtality. I am reading Blood Merdian by him, it's about a young boy traveling through the old west and gets involved with indian scalpers. It is BURTAL. Very gory and grim but beautifully written. I began to read The Road as well, it can be classifed as poetry. It is so subtle and minimalist in its prose its sentencese are so brief, more like a poem. Read that a Blood Meridian. PS, you are soooo cute.

The great thing was how dark and scary the world was, and how they showed the death of all animals and nature. As for the ending goes I loved the slight shimmer of hope it left me with. I mean, the world was still a really scary and dark place, but... it leaves you with a slight hope that maybe, just maybe, humanity can survive with some kindness and love still intact in their hearts. Well, I guess the point is I loved the movie, and I think you are WAY WAY WAY to harsh in your review of it.

The ending was terrible, but not totally surprising(that it was terrible). The bleakness, the tone, the utter futility gets raped from the story by an obvious lack of imagination, and insight. The film works as a snapshot, a brief glimpse into these characters lives, once you bookend that, in the way they did, the struggles that come before lose their sense of futility. Its no longer a long fruitless meaningless struggle for survival. It becomes something else entirely. At best, a silly fantasy.

Agreed, but we as the audience know this, so why not end on a glimmer of hope? (Otherwise, I am all about realism, but this movie does this pretty much the entire time)

Looking at history, in the terms of truly ancient history, our place in the universe, the potential of space travel and what that would take - then place that in the context of human history, I understand that we are still simply cavemen in many ways. Thus, dystopian futures such as in this film and even in The Walking Dead are completely understandable. To me, one of the most poignant scenes in the film was when they came upon the family who had h*@*n*g83d themselves in the barn. The father and son continue into a present of pain, suffering and potential unspeakable torture at the hands of their fellow humans. This scene asks, which is the correct decision in this circumstance?

This movie was such a huge miss. I can't put my finger on why, but you come closer to figuring it out than most reviewers. Re the grey palette, the book is sometimes ridiculed for describing grey with every word from the thesaurus. The director/cinematographer took it too literally and tried to force the situation. The world doesn't get sapped of color just because there has been a war or whatever, as is evident in other post-Apocalypse and war films. There might not be life, but there are still vestiges of what once was. Another thing that bothered me is some of the dialog. McCarthy is a beautiful writer but his prose is better as narration, not dialog (with the exception of some of the great lines in NCFOM); that part where the father starts telling the cannibal guy what parts of his brain will be pulverized by the bullet in his gun was just silly. No one would do that. : )

This movie was better than Avatar or The Dark Knight (for me), I think you are using same framework for all the movies... This movie ought to be in it's own category... I never watched "no country for old men" and never will because I think it's another "shouting" movie.. I'v seen hundreds of movies like that and some one lines or more tension won't make me like it ... NOT .... ONE .... BIT.

She is limited to about 9 minutes I believe, per KZfaq video length rules. I don't know how long a review is supposed to be, but 6 minutes seems like enough time. I think her review was fine.

Even reviews should be objective, a review is just one's opinion, and opinions are based on emotional responses. You are essentially reviewing her review using your personal opinions and feelings on what a "proper" review should be. How is what she is doing any different than what you are doing? Her review is just her personal feelings on the movie from her perspective. You might disagree with her, but I don't see how her review is "wrong" or " Incorrect".

I'm a liar to my own opinion. That's great to hear, I'm sure only your opinion is the one that matters, it's gotta be the only truth. Anyhow, yes the movie was depressing, boring and the only scene your referring to could have been intense. But it ended in a minute, nothing happened. Like I said, the writers just skipped over everything that could have been really interesting. Really boring movie. This person reviewing the movie is right. Just rent it if you have absolutely NOTHING to do!

Great, another person who compares a new film to the greatest films of all time, and when it doesn't measure up, she condems it. Lawrence of Arabia? Please. Can we compare this with the other films released this year? This is one of the finest films I have ever seen, and like Kurosawa's "Ikiru," it's one of maybe 10 films ever made that can actually change a person's life.

This review seems ignorant, you basically just bashed the movie because it portayed the award-winning book. If it didn't portray and follow the book's plot people would just bash it like they did Harry Potter and The Half-Blood Prince for not including many parts and portraying the emotion that Harry had at the end of the book.

I saw the movie, boring and depressing. Every time you think something exciting is going to happen, it doesn't. The writers don't seem to understand how to make a thrilling thriller. nothing really makes you on edge through out the whole movie. It was more like a discovery channel depiction of what would happen to father and his son in an apocalyptic scenario. You know what I mean? (skips over any and all intense action that would have made it a movie instead of a documentary) it's a poor movie

Disagree about No Country, among the Coen's worst - far too violent, boring plot and ultimately a boring film. Got The Road on dvd cheap and looking forward to watching it.
