PLEASE READ THIS:
PLEASE CLICK ON THE LINK below to read some things I had to say about this video, my background, and most importantly OCD! (it was too long to fit here. I put a summary below this as well):
docs.google.com/document/d/1-...
SUMMARY of description:
This video was a school project created for psychology class, and everything in it is staged. The purpose of the video is to get rid of some misconceptions about Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD), and provide a new perspective on mental illnesses in general. The video depicts what life might be like for ONE SPECIFIC person with a MILD case of OCD, and what might be going through their mind.
Note:
While I have been diagnosed with OCD and used personal experiences and knowledge to make this video, it does not necessarily depict my actual life or exactly what goes on in my head, as the purpose of the video is not to show the world what my life is like.
Some ideas or misconceptions about OCD:
• OCD is NOT about being a germophobe or perfectionist, and it’s different for everyone. It about severe anxiety and fear that is totally irrational (knowingly so), which is often (but also often not) followed by repetitive actions to cope with the anxiety.
• It is normal for anybody to have anxiety, pet-peeves, and obsessive-compulsive tendencies sometimes, but that doesn’t necessarily mean they have OCD.
• The obsessions (thoughts/feelings) and compulsions (actions/behaviors) of someone with OCD are very disruptive, disturbing, and sometimes destructive to their lives, and consume a significant amount of time and energy.
• People with OCD know that what they are doing (or the thoughts they are thinking) are irrational and don’t make any sense, but they can’t help it.
Additional notes:
• This video only scratches the surface of what OCD can be like, and is just coming from one perspective. Even for the character in the video, the thoughts you hear are only what’s happening on the surface! It's not just, "oh that really bothers me I'm gonna fix it." It's much deeper anxiety, paranoia, and depression, which is really hard to explain or depict in a school project video.
• The details of the video, such as the labels not facing the same way, the bedroom being kind of messy, or mismatched socks are not oversights! It shows how OCD doesn’t mean everything has to be perfect!
• The big punchline at the end shows how people often don’t know when someone is struggling with a mental illness, and it is very easy to make false assumptions about their irregular behavior. It isn’t anyone’s fault for not knowing the background story, so you can’t blame them for making assumptions, but the point is to just always keep your mind open, because you never know what someone else might be going through!

People keep saying he can't have OCD since his room is messy, but that's the thing people really don't understand. It's not really a controlled or reasonable thing, and he probably has to really choose his battles as he doesn't have very much expendable time after being locked into something for long periods of the day. I, person with diagnosed OCD, have the most horrendous room ever. I can't clean it because it'll never be done in just one day and going to bed at night knowing it won't be done or really even better is extremely disheartening and anxiety inducing. Sometimes I spend 10 minutes touching an object over and over because the first hundred times I touched it felt wrong and I get locked on until it feels right. It's obsessive and compulsive. I don't control what locks me in. It causes me a lot of distress.

Haleigh Champion I may be judged for my age but I do have a OCD an it's very hard living with it. But I may not have it as bad his him in the video. However I've never been late and never plan do. I've spent 10 mins just flicking up in down videos to make it look perfect.

I think most people have some form of OCD...like me for instance...I can only use my tooth brush no more than once or twice...then I will buy a new one...I wash my hands often or just use alot of hand sanitizer...sometimes I avoid wearing the color blue...or having anything that's blue... it's not an easy thing to deal with
@averychampion6927

Lee Lee There's only one form of OCD, severity within a diagnosis may differ by person. Having some obsessive tendencies does not constitute a disorder. OCD is debilitating to me and rules my day if I don't treat it properly. Everybody has quirks and little obsessions, but that I'm and of itself is not OCD. OCD is having near or totally uncontrollable compulsions to do something to the point of it becoming an obsession. Like being incapable of moving on unless you do in all entirety what you are obsessing over. It's not a preference, I don't even really care about a lot of the things I'm compulsed to do and I'm not always compulsed to do what I do care about.

Haleigh Champion hmmm Idk...I really think I have OCD...I will not use my tooth brush again...because to me it's too dirty...so basically I have a new tooth brush everyday...and don't like the color blue...because I think something bad might happen if I wear blue...unless it's my favorite blue shirt...or like bed sheets/blankets...also I always thought OCD was divided in to different categories like...hoarding...brain injury...mental rituals...getting things just right...medicine related etc...

@lesjohn534
@lesjohn534 7 жыл бұрын
Yes, some people with OCD would need to have the deodorant facing the front. A lot of people who don't have OCD would like that, too :) But some OCD sufferers might need it to face another way because of a colour or a word or a symbol, for example. Putting that out of their sight for them means that something bad will not now happen.

I feel like people nowadays think it is cool to have a mental disorder. It really isn't. OCD isn't being a perfectionist. Its being a perfectionist to the point where it disrupts your life. Wanting your pencils to be in a certain way isn't OCD, its called being neat.

I actually had a scene in this where the character was at school doing work with friends. The character had a paper (or something like that, I don't really remember) next to him that wasn't straight. It didn't phase him, but one of the friends had to stop and fix it, and makes a joke about having OCD. The character just kinda looks at him, and you can tell wants to say something but doesn't. Unfortunately I cut that scene out for time reasons, and also to just focus on one thing.

This video is really great but it doesn't take into account people with different kinds of obsessions and compulsions.. Like some people with OCD aren't disturbed by being tidy but they have thoughts like - "if I step on a crack on the sidewalk I'll die", or "is the door locked?*checks* no but is it actually locked? *checks it again* but is it really really locked?"

teen g it is EXTREMELY mentally draining. I live my life in shame and embarrassment daily- even if a person isn’t aware of my OCD- just like the voice in his head I find myself thinking to myself “Just knock it off, you’re so weird and ridiculous”. But I can’t stop. There is NO way that I can continue to the next task if I have it in my head that I need to do that SAME one , just once more for the 5 time- even though it probably was the exact same the first time. Ugh! I could cry.

And everything HAS to be straight. I wash my hands 5 times a day, so when I wake up I clean my house, also when I come back from school I clean.

@backup683
@backup683 7 жыл бұрын
Pinja K for some people with OCD it's hard enough to get to sleep and get enough sleep in one night to have the energy to control your OCD and you just think it's simple enough as waking up two hours earlier when anxiety gets worse when you don't get enough sleep. Not only that but some people with OCD have strict bedtime and morning schedules and changing that will cause them so much physical pain (I know from experience). So you're being extremely ignorant making comments like this.

I bought a skirt one time and HAD to return it or my dad would die. In 8th grade, we had to read a chapter in a book. After I finished, I had to read the chapter backwards or a family member would die. I had a frightening thought and by reading the chapter backwards I would undo THAT thought. OCD is very time consuming and exhausting. I lived in an apartment and had to wash the outside steps with bleach because they were contaminated. I did it while everyone was at work. I have an extreme case of OCD.

That's when i thought enough is enough! I didn't cared how things were or what I said. Or what I thought. I didn't let it control me. Now look at me 6 years later, i have graduated and working. My mom got me new boots and my OCD causes me to hate them because I can never tie them tight enough. I want them as tight as possible to the point where they hurt my feet because that comforts me to know they won't magically fall off. It's the little things that make you the angriest.

I switched to shoes that does not require tying up (hidden elastic), and started with a slightly tight one. As the shoes stretched, they became looser and I gradually overcame the need to have the shoes tight. But still, every-time I get new shoes that are slightly tight, I feel that comfort of being sure they wont fall off. Besides they saves a LOT of time..

I don't have OCD but I must say this is incredibly well executed, people really romanticize mental illness especially OCD and anxiety, but this really shows that it is an ILLNESS not a quirk or a cute personality trait. I'm sorry you struggle, I watch my dad go up and down the stairs just checking to make sure the lights are off, having to drive back to the house to make sure the stove is off, even when nobody used it. I'm so happy you've shown what it's really like to have OCD. My OCD is just about washing my hands, but I do it until they start bleeding and no one understands it, they think it's weird. The thing is that I know it's completely irrational and that my hands are clean yet I can't stop doing it, it's like something possesses me to do it.

dunno lol I'm the same way, my OCD is mainly just my hand washing but it used to be other things, particularly checking to make sure if the oven was off or that my lamp was off, I had to turn it on and off several times before I left, so it wouldn't start a fire. It sucks too because people have told me to "just quit being stupid" or, yes in these exact words, "don't be such a dumbass," and it makes me feel awful, especially when it comes from my family. I hope that it gets better for you.

that's true...I have perfectionist qualities to my personality. It would take me all day to do a drawing because the lines etc would have to be perfect and I'd keep rubbing out and drawing them again. Same goes when I do my makeup and stuff. I used to think I had OCD as id get really frustrated and start crying if I couldn't perfect something but I then realised that OCD is a lot more tedious. I'm usually a perfectionist when it comes to doing creative things.

Honestly I see more people saying (some probably lying) “I have been diagnosed with OCD!” than the people that you are pointing out. But, I do see your point.. it’s actually very sad that some people do not know the difference between having a disorder and being a perfectionist. Same with people falsely calling people things like “gay” and “retarded” when there are actually people that have their whole lives suffering, living in poverty, and even dying because of these things. People need a reality check... 😖😖

NDG Vids maybe you should try to spell better and explain your reasoning?? I'm not trying to be rude I swear. That's a version of OCD I have. You see, it's not as simple as you say. I can't stand it when people are horrible at spelling and grammar. I do understand that sometimes they can't help it, and I don't mind little mistakes here and there. But you can't just cure OCD overnight. It simply doesn't work like that. You have to understand that exposing yourself to new things you aren't accustomed to gives some people extreme anxiety to the point of panic attacks and hyperventilating

@cloudcat incoming I know but you have to push yourself. Dont tell yourself you cant do it because you can. Push through the itching. People get mad when you say things like this because they dont wanna push themselves. You cannot let your ocd control you. Whenever I saw mushrooms my face went numb, body got itchy, and I overall started to freak out. One time I had a sumo-seizure. In a situation like that you need to have someone around you obviously dont do it if your going to get hurt,you know yourself. However, I kept pushing myself to be around mushrooms, and look at me, I can tolerate mushrooms now. Practice makes perfect.

Fire Heat Art what you said is exactly the idea I was trying to portray...that what makes it hard for people with OCD is the terrible, irrational thoughts that pop into your head, like something bad happening to you or others, and then the feeling that the only way to alleviate the stress, or prevent these things from happening, is through the compulsive actions and behaviors that you "need" to do. It's what goes on in your head, the irrational stress, that makes it difficult, and I think people don't always realize that

I have OCD as well and if you manage your time properly you can reduce the times you're late. I suggest organizing the counter items right before bed. Set a timer for each activity to avoid doddling. You can time yourself doing each activity and then total up the minutes to know how much time you need to get ready. Then add an extra 10 minutes to cover error. If you can be fixated on getting things to sit straight you can concentrate on your timing.

I have OCD as well and i have overcome a majority of it by simply ignoring the urges and just fight them until im out of the housr , as the day progresses i slowly start to forget about it all through the day. When i get bacc home and start getting the urge to go fucc off, i go and fix something A SINGLE THING maybe two if im really being a dumb cunt about it, been working for me for years. Slowly weening myself off of this bullshit. Maybe some of you cunts could try this and it might help? Who fuccing knows, who fuccing cares. Every one with OCD just leave the god damn shit alone and leave the house i promise the urges will fade just like you and the memory of yourself once you're dead and gone, no one will remember you and nothing you ever do matters. Let the urges fade just like that . Bye ya fuccin dumb fuccs . Hope i helped ya pos .

@markschachter6998
@markschachter6998 7 жыл бұрын
My goal was actually to make that exact point... and I felt it was kind of hard to do that in a short school video without getting too deep or too dark, but I figured that what I did was enough to show people who think that OCD is all about being neat that it's actually about the irrational obsessions that cause so much anxiety that you do things you know make no sense and are a waste of time and energy. I think that concept alone is still surprising to some people, and is at least a first step to understanding. Also, a lot of people commented on the messy room and labels facing the wrong way, which hopefully shows that it's not about being neat and perfect. Anyway, I addressed all of this in my updated description, which probably wasn't up yet when you wrote this!

Personally, sometimes I do get to that point and I move on, but when that happens the anxiety is at its highest, and I can be stuck thinking about it for hours. With OCD the anxiety you have when "it's not right" can be paralyzing and that's why people just keep repeating until it's right

Mark Schachter I don't have OCD but I do things repeatedly when I don't feel they're right and I simply can't leave it be or I repeat words or phrases until the sound right or if someone else said it "wrong" then I'll say it too. This is simply an observation, I am aware that OCD is so much worse and I did suffer some kind of obsessive compulsions as a child (washing my hands after touching anything to the point that they started bleeding, making this weird sound at a certain pitch or else I would be very agitated) but again, it wasn't to the extent that I know OCD gets to.

Really interesting to see what it's like for someone who is hyper-aware of every detail in their lives. I have ADHD, and it gives me the opposite problem. I can never pay attention for long enough to keep any kind of routine going for long. I always end up forgetting about something or zoning out on the way there and wind up somewhere completely different. I have to put extra effort in just to make sure I'm not leaving things behind whenever I exit a room. Stuff like re-arranging everything in my bathroom by size is something I only do when I'm bored and not paying attention to what my hands are doing. Anyways, nice vid. This is something that you could probably guess is kind of hard for me to imagine otherwise.

I have OCD but mines quite different than this. I could relate to some of this but mostly not. For me the nightly checks are more of a routine but my other rituals are on the spot, random and don’t involve symmetry or thing being in place. For me i’ll have to do certain things in order to prevent bad things from happening to my loved ones or myself such as tapping a certain object. The object is often always changing. I’ll get intrusive thoughts telling me if I don’t do something, something bad will happen. My rituals aren’t as obvious as yours, I could be next to someone and be doing rituals without them knowing. Like secretly repeating sentences or tapping certain things until it feels just right.

I used to have OCD like this so bad. It manifested in the form of persisting and repeating thoughts that wouldn't ever stop no matter how irrational I knew they were. Everything in my bedroom was perfectly straight and orderly. If anyone even touched or changed something, I would have a legit meltdown. It lasted to about middle school for me. I didn't know what OCD was at the time, nor did my parents, which made things so much more scary since I didn't know I could possibly be helped. One day I just got so fed up that I snapped and trashed my room, and since then, I haven't had OCD. I don't recommend breaking things to cure yourself, but what I think actually helped me was immersing myself in what I feared, albeit drastically. Of course I'm a rare (and lucky) case since I literally did get fixed in an instant, but the point is still there: all sufferers of OCD have hope. You may need therapy. You may need meds. Whatever the case, you are not trapped

I do hate that lots of people say that you can’t have OCD if your room is messy or if you don’t clean a lot because that is NOT TRUE. Me as an example is that I have OCD with symmetry and I tend to hoard a lot of things with the fear of throwing them away or putting them out of sight would lead to something bad to happen to me. Because of this I have to have all of these different things that I don’t even use all on my dressers but because of my symmetrical annoyances I have to organize them and make it all fit. But the really bad part is that it makes it impossible to clean my room or even think about getting rid of things even though I don’t use them. And sometimes if I’m walking down stairs but I accidentally jump down and put more pressure on one foot I’ll end up having to stomp on the other foot until they have the same pressure and feel. A lot of people tease me about this but when I’m walking on a sidewalk or even in a store with tiles I can’t step on any cracks or I’ll have to step on it with my other foot. I know it might not be OCD but I do truly feel that it could so if you guys could tell me then thank you (because I can’t get diagnosed)

Thank you for making this. Thankfully I do not have OCD this badly. It was a little hard for me to explain what it's like on a daily basis to friends at school. I am going to show them this now to hopefully explain it better to them.

I don't really know if I have OCD but what I feel i'ts... erratic, and when it appears it's frustrating. I can stay days without having to wash my teeth until they bleed for 20 minutes, to tidy everything my sister leaves on the floor, and cleaning the kitchen before i go to school. Then, it comes back. I don't get this extreme anxiety but still I can't think normally in school thinking that i have to get home and get everything done. Sometimes is bad because I'm always late because of that. Also, I hate to have my hands dirty, and my feet. I just can't use shoes whether they are closed or sandals I just have to wash them at least once an hour, this one gets me really anxious because i feel a disgusting sensation in my feet and hands. My mom just says I'm tricky, but It's annoying because you disturb the people around you and they don't understand.

I used to have OCD when I was very little (around kindergarten and 1st grade). It truly got in the way of everything, I’m not even over exaggerating. I had to touch EVERYTHING an even number amount of times whether that would be 2 times, 4 times, 6 times, and so on. Even if I accidentally touched something, I would HAVE to touch it at least one more time. It was exhausting. I’m extremely grateful that I went to therapy and eventually it went away, but I feel like people don’t understand that OCD isn’t just over obsessively being neat but there is other ways people can suffer with OCD. I hope this helped you understand a little bit more of OCD.

Paul Hayes *Hi, I don’t have OCD, but I tend to do this, where I HAVE to make my writing perfect. I have to have all the marks! I can’t really stand it if my grammar and writing is bad. My room isn’t really that bad. It’s just my closet. My closet is the only problem. I cleaned my closet like 2 weeks ago, and it’s already messy. I have to make sure everything is nice and straight. As you can see, my grammar and spelling is really good, even if it’s **3:12** A.M. (which it is.), I will still make my writing nice.*

I had ocd and severe anxiety attacks which lead me into depression for several years and I'm only 27 but I cured my ocd. I believe the trick is to watch our thoughts mindfully and not reacting. I noticed I would do things in a pattern and not see myself doing it, hence never breaking the circle all I needed was to take a new route. See my ocd was related to fear that if I don't do certain things something bad is gonna harm people that I was thinking about at the moment, it included anyone from family friends to strangers . I just replaced that with a new thought that is, if I think about someone or anyone than something really good is going to happen to/for them. After practicing it for sometime my thoughts naturally became neutral and left me capable of thinking positive. Ps. I had all kinds of ocd's from (excessively.)cleaning, symmetry to crying, not socializing I mean I stayed in my room didn't meet No One but it's been a complete 180° now.

The people saying his room isn't clean yet he has OCD is weird; this is to you: In life you have to make decisions about what you want and have to do seriously! 😒 I have OCD this is my battle everyday! This causes me a LOT of stress, and quite frankly I have no time for my room! Maybe possible he has no time for his room, because OCD is time consuming and already took up his spare time to clean it!

I related to some of the things this boy did. I was also always late for school because I felt the need to perfect everything before I left the house. I never thought I had OCD until I was diagnosed with it at 20. Wish I had known earlier, it explained alot about me and I am now on a medication that has helped so much and made me feel more capable to resist unhealthy thoughts and get on with my day like a human should, without the paranoia.

We've been working on theme in English class and this video made me think back to the story we had to read in class where we had to come up with a possible theme of the story. I said that you'll never know a person's biggest secrets or mental state just by judging their actions. This statement didn't really mean that much to me until after I watched this video, and that's when it really hit me. Actions do not always determine if someone is careless, or irresponsible, or whatever. What people go through everyday, what they have to deal with, is not always expressed through their actions in public. Faking a smile, pretending that everything is okay, that's what people do to hide what they're actually going through mentally.

I perfectly understand you,because i have OCD too,and i feel so sorry for you😢That man from school said :"He's so irresponsible",and I am so angry😤!I don't know if he will ever understand how bad is to have OCD...My OCD began when i was in the 7 grade,i was just beating in the table,chair,and all stuff made from wood 3 times,because i was thinking that if i won't do this,i will transform into another person and i will eventually die...When I clean my room or the house,I am obsessed to be perfect,otherwise,i will die from the dust and dirt..I wash my hands so much ,they are dried ,because i have bacteria and i don't want to die..These are only a few things that I do every single day.. It is very hard to control myself..I understand you ,be strong,and make sure that you are supported,like my parents and my friends support me😊Take care! Giorgia❤
