How obsessive is too obsessive? Welcome to www.WatchMojo.com, and today we’re counting down our picks for the Top 10 Characters with OCD in Movies and TV. For this list, we’re looking at big and small screen characters that seem to have prominently visible obsessive-compulsive disorder issues. These characters’ OCD behaviours are much more than mere tendencies, and are more like necessities that need to be done repeatedly. However, they don’t necessarily have to have been diagnosed with OCD to qualify.

+Racist Bassist AIDS and cancer are not the same sort of thing as PTSD or OCD, notice the word "disorder"? Yes, that is different from a "disease". To understand the difference, please go educate yourself. I enjoyed this list, and I actually would like to see a list of PTSD characters, because there are interesting behavioral side effects to such disorders, whereas things such as cancer just involves suffering and bodily issues, it can change your life and end it, but it doesn't force your entire character to act in certain ways from nervous ticks and so on. Do you understand?
@WatchMojo
@WatchMojo 8 жыл бұрын
+Racist Bassist That you'd compare diseases with disorders/conditions tells me everything I need to know about your comment. One is behavioral: people with OCD demonstrate a certain set of patterns... 10 people with AIDS could be as different as ten snowflakes for the love of all things holy!
@WatchMojo

+Racist Bassist AND... despite what YOU may think, a list on characters with diseases - and how they portray those characters, the struggles etc - could be educational and informative, reducing stigma and discrimination. Bottom line, just because you think something is "ridiculous" doesn't make it so to millions of others.

I know this comment was literally from three years and no one is ever going to see this, but what Nicholas Cage is doing in that movie is actually a form of OCD. It's not like Tourettes because you can control it. I personally I have OCD and this is one of my symptoms. I squint my eyes and clear my throat several times a minute and people look at me like i'm crazy.lol. It's just like any other form of compulsion. WatchMojo, let's get something extremely clear. Being quirky or neurotic =/= OCD. Take Monica Geller, your #9 on this list. She likes having things clean. That's it. The show overexaggerates that characteristic because it makes people laugh, not because Monica's anything more than uptight. Take Death the Kid from Soul Eater, a character that didn't even get an honorable mention. He has legitimate OCD. He doesn't get annoyed or twitch when something's out of place, he can't even go about his day anymore. He sees something asymmetrical, he starts having a panic attack. He's almost died multiple times because he couldn't bring himself to fight back against something symmetrical that was attacking him. When the idea that something in his house might have been asymmetrical, just the mere notion entered his head, he flew from EGYPT TO LAS VEGAS AND BACK just to ensure it wasn't. Hollywood regularly portrays OCD as something it isn't. If you're going to make public entertainment about this kind of stuff and act like you're informed about it, please get it right

+AchtungFreud Obsessive compulsive, wanting everything cleaned and being unable to help yourself is one form of OCD. She isn't as bad as the majority of the characters on the list but she does have OCD since she HAS to clean. OCD has levels to it, it isn't just people who panic. It can be very mild to extreme.
@BlueMidnightWolf24

+John Klein Ok, you aren't quite right about that one. OCD is an ANXIETY disorder, which basically means that if they don't go through their compulsions it literally break down into a panic attack. The way that my best friend describes it is, she literally feels like she will die if she doesn't do X thing. It is that anxiety that adds the "disorder" to the obsessive compulsive. Someone can be obsessive and compulsive without having OCD. I believe that Monica's cleaning is a compulsion, and she does obsess about it; but she may not have OCD. On an interesting related note; wanting things to be straight/symmetrical is not OCD either. I was actually surprised to learn this. It's a related, but completely different disorder called OCPD. Meaning Death the Kid (as people are mentioning in the comments) and Hannibal are OCPD, not OCD.

As someone who has had severe, debilitating OCD, it's tough to watch stuff like this because of all of the misinformation, misdiagnosis, and of course the promoting of OCD as something quirky or funny. #10 and #1 were the only examples on the list that were done even remotely well even though both still had their flaws. Honeslty, it would be better if you stayed away from these sorts of lists all together. You aren't raising awareness (not in any positive way, at least), educating, etc., and you are adding to the pathetic portrayal of OCD in media. I'm not suggesting you must get a degree in psychology and give a lecture; I just think it would be better for you to avoid talking about it at all if possible considering this nature of this channel.
@Icannotchangemyhandle

+Frank Smyly For example: wanting things to be clean does not mean someone has OCD. For one thing, there is a personality disorder called OCPD (obsessive compulsive personality disorder) which many people may have, but despite the name it is not at all related to OCD. It is not an anxiety disorder, whereas OCD is. You'd think they'd change the name when they made the DSM-V, but they were too busy renaming disorders for political correctness rather than actually clearing up confusion. Also, OCD is not an adjective. It is not an adverb. It is a noun. If someone tells you "oh I'm so OCD about this!", it's a clear sign that the don't know ANYTHING about what OCD is.
@phoebeblack3901

OCD And OCPD are two VERY DIFFERENT things. OCD is an anxiety disorder, while OCPD is classified as a personality disorder, the two are NOT EVEN RELATED. Joan Crawford did not have OCD. People with OCD know that their compulsions are unreasonable but they are compelled to do them anyway out of the fear that something horrendous will happen if they don't go though with their compulsion.OCD is first and foremost an anxiety disorder all of the outward observable behaviors are a product of intense fear or dread. The compulsions (of people with OCD) rarely extend to other people. OCPD more accurately describes Joan Crawford, people who have OCPD are not aware that their compulsions are unreasonable and they expect others to react the same to things that are not perfectly done or perfectly clean. People With OCPD become angered or frustrated when others don't do things the way they want them because they (the OCPD person) believes that their expectations of perfection and cleanliness are normal and the way things should be.

Obsessions can be about so many different things not just contamination. There are so many different sub types of ocd like hit and run ocd, harm ocd, scrupolosity, etc. Compulsions don’t just include hand washing or germ related compulsions. It would be nice to have a portrail of a character who had ocd that has a less talked about subtype. Also, ocd isn’t quirky or endearing, it can be debilitating for some people.

OCD isn't a quirk, it's a debilitating anxiety based disorder characterized by unreasonable thoughts and fears that lead to compulsive behaviors. Even when OCD has to do with cleaning, like contamination OCD, it's not fun, we don't enjoy the cleaning, it's inherently stressful. It is also not an adjective. And those with OCD are 10x more likely to commit su*cide.

This list is almost entirely OCPD which is completely different from OCD. OCD is characterized with intrusive beliefs that cause a need for obsessive thoughts that lead to compulsive behaviors to prevent said beliefs from occurring. "As Good as it Gets" and "The Aviator" are the only ones that truly display the disorder, and their "phobias" and "paranoia" are actually just their OCD because they legitimately portray the correct disorder for this video.

Not going to watch this one, sorry, I usually like your content WM but I think trivialising a disability like this for the sake of simple amusement is just wrong. I get that the internet isn't a pleasant place and KZfaq is one of the more common ports of call for taste and decency to come to die but that tagline "How obsessive is too obsessive?" Is so bad. Would you say "How schizophrenic is too schizophrenic?" no you wouldn't, and they're both psychological conditions that can make life very hard for many people. Please think ideas through in future, I'm not going to stop watching your videos or anything as I believe you didn't mean any harm and you're probably just running out of ideas or something but yeah, sorry for ranting.

You say he's no good at it, but that's the BEST he can do with the voice he has, so deal with it. You backed up the original comment by saying he has every right to criticize, and you're completely right, but then you went off at the guy in the next comment who also had EVERY RIGHT to say whatever the fuck he wanted about the original comment. Monica may *seem* obsessive-compulsive in her competiveness, over cleaning and control issues, but that doesn't mean she's realistically OCD. She's more overly competitive and obssessive as a result of having to compete with Ross for her parents affectionate, as he was the favourite who could do no wrong, while she was constantly criticised by her mother for not living up to her perfect standards (something she ironically picked up from her *own* critical mother). Hence why Monica is now so competitive and controlling. She probably uses cleaning as a coping strategy and to please her overly critical mother. Being severely obese as child and teen was *another* example of her coping strategies, using food to fulfil the feelings of rejection she got from her parents not showing her the love she needed. She was is also desperate to get married and have children to fulfil that aching hole in her heart.
