@meemurthelemur4811

It was actually very common back then. Marriages among the well off were made more out of financial, political, or social gain than love or affection. Women were expected to be loyal to their husbands, but men who found love elsewhere were not criticized unless they made too much of a public spectacle. Women were pretty much expected to just look the other way. Of course, there were times and places where women were able to keep lovers as well as long as they did so quietly.

Women were expected to turn a blind eye to their husband's indiscretions. Yet, if a woman was to do the same thing that her husband did, she was seen as a harlot and would be severely punished by her husband and family... not to mention by her community who had super high expectations for women in society.

I honestly have no idea why he killed his wife. What had he to gain? She had no legal power to do anything. What an entitled creep
@TiffWaffles
@TiffWaffles Жыл бұрын
I think that the motive is a little clearer now that I have listened to the story. I think William murdered his wife because he wanted to have a life with his mistress and his seven children. Sarah wasn't useful to William. He was living a double life with his mistress and only going home to Sarah whenever he felt like it. He already had everything he wanted with his mistress and decided to get rid of Sarah because he wouldn't have been able to divorce her and if he did, HE would have been seen as the cause of it and had to pay HER.
@emilysigmund1255
@emilysigmund1255 Жыл бұрын
@@TiffWaffles no sh*t. But he could have had that without killing her, as so many men did in that time. Men abandoned their wives to live with their mistresses while their wives remained alive in that era often. He had all the power he needed to do that.

@LucienSabre
@LucienSabre 3 жыл бұрын
No, he couldn’t. His reputation wouldn’t have suffered as much as hers (which would have been completely destroyed, she would’ve had to hide in the country with no hopes whatsoever of striking not even a decent match left), but it would have still been affected and as such got tarnished in the eye of the high society he was part of. That’s something no gentleman would’ve allowed.
@LucienSabre
@LucienSabre 3 жыл бұрын
@Nicky L Do you mean on what grounds he could have had the marriage annulled? Fairly easy, claim the marriage had not been consumated. No doctor would've been able to physically verify that - as no doctor would or could have performed that kind of examination on a woman of high status without the permission of her husband or father.
@LucienSabre
@LucienSabre 3 жыл бұрын
@Nicky L Exactly. Because, as I already said, no doctor would’ve performed the kind of examination that verified if a marriage had been consumated or not on a rich lady without permission from her husband....permission which would have never been given as the husband’s word on it would’ve been considered more than enough and no doctor would’ve dared to question it. But it was too much of a blow to the pride of a gentleman to even consider that examination, so none would’ve even dreamed to demand it.

@@louisecoffey9843 that’s just clever storytelling. He could have flat out said it but it’s evident if you look at it. They were together 13 years with zero children. No, I'm sure he didn't care about that - after all, he managed to have children with Teresa kenny. He also spent time as much time with Maria as with Teresa. No - I think Maria's "sin" was that she eventually found out about his extramarital relationship and began hounding him about it, or began to threaten him or Teresa, and he became sick of it. With that, I am not excusing this man : he created the problem to begin with, as the unfaithful always do.

I’m from Dublin.. and know Howth well, as it’s still a popular place. Howth is a great place for a day trip, a ramble, a meal, it has plenty to offer, I liked it that much.. I got married there and had my reception there (at the deer park hotel) but I never liked that island. I don’t know why but it made me feel uneasy somehow.. I had many chances to visit it, but always refused to take up the offer. I now live in Australia. I really enjoyed the old photos of the great historic town of Howth. I was wondering if the other couple that was on the island, on the same day... were called as witnesses? The woman asked Maria to come back early with them. Was that just being polite or did she feel there was trouble ahead for Maria? And the autopsies.. didn’t they examine lungs back then? surly water in the lungs would of been the definitive answer to wether she drowned or not. Anyhow, I’m convinced he was guilty.

What a strange and intriguing story. Thank you for doing one from Ireland. I thought for sure he was guilty but then I had some doubts too. I'm glad he got life and not death just incase he was innocent but: a sheet being found under her, him not hearing the screams, being able to find the clothes right away, and not seeming bothered his wife had been gone for awhile without him knowing where she was on a small island? All that to me is very suspicious. You said two of the children moved to America with their mother, what happened to the other 5? I wonder if any of his painting still exists in a museum. Another great job👍

William Kirwan had his cake and ate it, too. He had seven children with the mistress and none with Maria? Did vasectomies exist back then? The island seemed to be the perfect place to commit a murder. Unfortunately for William, he tried to stage the scene but was unsuccessful. After time in prison, he lived out his life with the mistress. Who was this man? Why did he kill Maria? He was “kind” to her and she was happy with him. “I’ll have her. But, I’ll not keep her long.”- Richard Gloucester- Richard lll William Shakespeare. A double life is difficult to maintain.
