Carrie Grills was my grandmother's sister on my moms side. My mother was able to get a box load of old newspapers, photos, and whatever (I never really looked) from relatives, but I think my mom sent the box back to them upon request after giving up on writing a book about her. Kind of weird having an evil sadistic serial killer in the family! Thanks for the video!

Plenty. The world, as it stands, has more killers than you'd care to imagine. However, they are unaccounted for due to stopping after only one or so victims or possibly dying themselves before being discovered. 👿So try not to think about it, you'd only upset yourselves. ☠

@thedativecase9733
@thedativecase9733 5 жыл бұрын
They didn't boil the fly papers they soaked them in cold water it was a common practice . It was also done because - surprisingly - dilute arsenic applied topically was very good for controlling spots and blemishes, though potentially dangerous. So if you were caught doing this who could say if you were doing it to beautify your complexion - or bump off your abusive husband ? Lots of scope for a clever defence lawyer.

Which shows that even elderly grandma's aren't necessarily the nice people we generally believe them to be. Imagine this..That nice old lady (that almost all of us have in our family) whether it be an aunt or grandma, poisoning people. It scares the shit out of you. I know noone in my family is like that, but I'm sure these people thought the same thing about loving, sweet and caring aunt carrie.
@suemassey5076

Agatha Christie said that a kind old lady smiling as she administered poison to yo u was much more frightening than a lunatic with a hatchet. She wrote, "By the Pricking of my Thumbs" with this theme, and it scared me. Also, in "The Pale Horse" she involved three old ladies in the same way. Sitting watching their victims die happens in several of her books.

It does make you wonder why, what appeared to be, a kind person for years, suddenly had evil thoughts (killing the family). What happened to cause this? Years of desperation? envy? a remark finally tipping her over the edge? or what? Relying on her good reputation to get away with it.
@janeeyre1990
@janeeyre1990 3 жыл бұрын
I could see a lot of people in my extended family doing this. But they're less kind and more so seething masses of passive aggression hidden behind a thin veneer of middle-class politeness. My paternal grandma, for example, gave my mom a packet of seeds for her garden that she said were honeysuckle but it turned out to be a weed that killed everything around it. She also has never shown empathy for other people (e.g., upset that her new carpet was stained with blood when my dad crashed through the window playing catch as a kid). With her personality and behavior, if she felt the need to kill someone, she would absolutely go for poison in baked goods or afternoon tea.
@janeeyre1990

That's probably why true crime like this doesn't scare me. I don't watch it to be shocked by the unthinkable horrors of human nature, I watch it to understand the pathology of people like my relatives.

Female serial killers are rare. Thank you for telling us about this one. Interesting!
@nahmaninisithole2734
@nahmaninisithole2734 5 жыл бұрын
I think that there are a lot more female serial killers than people realize. It goes like this, females that have more than one husband that died may have contributed to their deaths by psychological trickery, or by suddenly becoming interested in intense exercise with hubby, or màke hubby move heavy furniture on a whim. Hiding or withholding lifesaving medication such as asthma inhalers or nitroglycerin tablets, spiteful divorces just to destroy husband's half of the business forcing him into bankruptcy court.I can go on all day about the games married women play to get the husband into an early grave. But I know what you mean.
@Ascratchee
@Ascratchee 4 жыл бұрын
I'd have to agree that female serial killers are far more common then the public lets on, as well as female sex offenders. I'd also say serial killers in general are far more common then what the public is led to believe. Unfortunately.
@abbyiswatching2046
@abbyiswatching2046 4 жыл бұрын
I used to think that female serial killers were almost nonexistent, it's the common wisdom, right? But the more I read the more convinced I am that believing that makes them less likely to look at a female suspect, because there seem to be a lot more of them than I thought. They seem to fly under the radar far more often.

Actually snakes don't have any sense of right or wrong good or evil. The death of their prey is incidental to their needs which is to feed themselves like any other living creature. But creatures like Aunt Thally here are truly evil, and that's a uniqueness only the human breed can produce...👿🥧☠

wow wee! since I've started listening to your shows and those of obsolete oddities, and a few others, it really brings to light of the true evil that has been in men and women for all of human històry. It's one thing to know it exists, and another to listen to it all being told in detail. It makes a person think twice when meeting someone new!

However once again you strike my fascination with your ability to find interesting details about the case that were not mentioned in that T.V presentation ^_^ Kudos to you. It's bad enough when they can't remember things and yell for no reason, or they soil themselves, but when you have to scold them and take away their poisons, that might be the last straw.

I know it was the 1950s, but I think that if I was on that jury I would have spun it out for a bit longer than 12mins- at least make it look as though you've engaged in serious deliberations. Give it a couple of hours at least. 12mins just looks dodgy, and could give ammunition to a future appeal hearing...

This is a great story. There seems to be countless tales of women like _Caroline Grills_ from the mid 19th to mid 20th century that offed people in their role as kindly mother, granny, nurse or "baby farmer". Poisons were relatively easy to come by but I have to wonder if contemporary women in these or similar roles, are killing at a same _per capita_ rate?

Stories like this always make me wonder which is scarier, someone who kills for some kind of gain or advantage in life (politically, financially or romantically motivated killings), some kill not really wanting to but coming into a situation where having the person around as a witness would be an issue (tying up a loose end as it were), or those who like Caroline, seem to kill just to kill, just to watch the suffering not necessarily out of malice or hatred of those individuals, but a lack of empathy for their pain. As humans we always try to attribute meaning in actions and logic in thoughts but sometimes really there isn't anything to rationalize. Nothing to be gained or achieved, just habitual. It seems foolish to think of "which is worse" but it's just so terrifying to think, that some people just cause suffering because they can and for no other benefit.
