Bought this volume. Expensive investment. Worth the price for the line drawings in the back of the book.

McKay’s? Yes, perhaps. If one is comfortable with these lines and construction differing from what we know of the ship. But if one wants to build a scratch model and needs the step by step guidance, the book is excellent for this. Accurate? Perhaps not but still interesting and worth the purchase. In my case, for completeness if the literature sake

Yes! That is what I had in mind about the ship yards and makers. who built these voyagers of the period that finally discovered the rest of the world as they decided who got what. But these ships represent engineering at it's peak at that time- they designed a huge, long 100 gun vessel that didn't sag or hog for more than half a century . The who and how they were built is as fascinating to me as the ships themselves.

The master-shipwrights of the time were not the “illiterates” that they are often presented to have been in modeling publications. They were the foremost engineers of the time, highly cultured, highly inteligent

Interesting review. Thought of getting the McKay book but didn't. Frank Fox, whose books I enjoy, was asked to review a copy of the book before printing. He had your same comments and complained the author ignored them. He thought the square tuck not only inaccurate but would have made the ship physically impossible to sail. The water flow caused by the square tuck would neutralize the rudder's capability to steer the ship. I believe his comments are still up on Amazon. I like anything 17th century. Would be interested in more of the same. Most people prefer material on English and American ships of the 18th to 19th century.

Oh, give me the 17th century anytime! Far More interesting period, formative, dynamic with beautiful ships and incredible taller-than-life characters. The 18th c by comparison is tame and boring. Alas, I heard Mr. Fox has passed away. I never met him face to face, but we corresponded and even talked by phone. I had deep respect for his knowledge! And yes- he is right about the Royal Sovereign as shown in the book: square tuck, definite no; framing as illustrated- highly unlikely as it contradicts what Pett himself wrote and what archaeology teaches us about framing in this period.

Perhaps you could answer this question? What tools were used to construct the beautiful 17th and 18th ship models with such precision with poor lighting, no electricity, etc.?

As far as we can tell, the usual small hand tools: planes, saws, chisels. At least, there are tool marks for these found

What fascinated me was the exquisite and expensive baroque carvings and the ambitious number of bronze guns. I am endeavoring to model the vessel as built in 1635, only colored black and gold, and gun decks lower in the hull, and in line with the gallery windows, prior to the 1658-60 refit. It may have not seen action in the early years, but the original design with all it's faults appeals to me. @@kroumbatchvarov-archaeologist

i really love your channel. i can feel the passion you have, and I feel you in every way, I am an amateur modeler and wish I had the skills to carve from scratch so that I could build the victory in her true beauty I am currently working on his majesty ship Bellerophon, got lots of different painting etc. but I need your advice on the color cos its a bit confusing, and I want to avoid the boring trafalgar themes, was the ship black and white strip originally or in some point of her life, any input or links would be so much appreciated from you, your love and passion for ships is just amazing ....fred

She had a sterling history of service for over sixty years but was generally unpopular as a flagship as her accommodation was not considered up to the standard of other ships despite her qualities, though Rupert evidently thought otherwise in 1673.

He considered her the best ship. Mind you, he did not suffer fools gladly and may have liked exactly the lack of accommodation and thus room for hangers on :-). He also was a rather Spartan giant of a man

@@kroumbatchvarov-archaeologist Rupert was stalwart Calvinist soldier and perhaps the only man on either side in the English Civil War to take the unnuanced cause of divine right of kings literally in the continental fashion. A fascinating if highly reactionary man.

Without the original drawings and models, Experts may surmise what is right and what is wrong, but unfortunately as no one alive today has ever seen the ship, no one can be sure of exact details. There are numerous kits of the ship on the market, they are all different, none of them resemble the Model that was displayed at the opening of the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich which dates back to 1827.

To some extent I agree with you. However, we do have quite a bit of knowledge of how ships were built at the time, the van de Velde drawings, archival data. There is a set of lines drawings that dates to about 1827 and it has been suggested that it is a redrawing of an older original. For the Charles Galley also only the copy survives. The framing patterns are known, the round tuck is undoubted. As to the kits, weeeell….. I’ll leave it at this :-)

I have no problems when different interpretations of the same ship exist, even if some features of it are unusual. But I do think that those interpretations should adhere to physical limits and in general to what was customary in the respective period. If the Sovereign would have been built as described in McKays book, contemporaries would have described her as clumsy in appearence, with unusual layout and equipment, and of bad sailing qualities. There is no evidence that this was the case.

The Deagostini kit is not accurate at all, one of the things to look out for are the deck heights , one of the decks is 4ft in height. Also both the kits you mention the forcastle is wavey, however a model in Greenwich Museum shows it as straight, as does Mckays drawings.

yeah, i saw that on your vids about the Deagostini and saw the model at the Somerset House, she is not at the NMM anymore, btw Are you still able to reproduce the 6 gunports deco from the beakhead bulkhead, that you did on yours? i ask a while back , you said might take a while , no rush , its for next year. I am still working on the Bellerophon at the moment cheers ...@@g-kip

Out of curiosity, are you modeling her as launched or as she was at the height of her glory? All kits that I know, show her only in her original version. Were it me, I would model her as she was in 1673.
