You mean the hopeless Minnie who left her family and home country to come someplace where she could do what she wanted in peace? Who then married and had a baby with a convict and because he…. *wait for it * went to JAIL, she had issues paying for food for her 1 daughter? (But she didn’t have issues BEFORE she had the daughter, kids don’t eat as much as adults. She fed herself just fine)… I digress…. Then she agreed to take money for kids knowing the whole while she was doing it for the wrong reasons. Husband/Convict gets out of jail, she gets knocked up AGAIN… THAT hopeless woman?

I think many people don't realize or understand that it was a very, very different world back in the 1800s, even the late 1800s and into the early 1900s. I'm old enough that my grandparents, who I spent much time with when I was a child, were born in the very late 1890s and first few years of the 1900s. First, there was basically no such thing as psychiatric help. There was the insane asylum, and prison, and that's about it. Back in those days, if you were mentally unstable, you dealt with it or you were put in prison or the asylum. Period. Second, life back then was not that far removed from a much more brutal way of life in general. One generation, maybe two, from people living in a constant state of warfare, especially in Europe where from the late 1700s well thru the early part of Victoria's reign. Life was very harsh for all except the wealthy and privileged. And the woman in this story certainly would have grown up in conditions that were much harsher overall than what we live with today, even if she was from a well to do family. I in no way condone her actions, murdering children for profit means an eternity burning in hell, which is no doubt where her soul now resides. But when you think of life in that time period, realize it was harder, harsher, more severe in almost every way than it is today.

It's easy TODAY to look down on Society then... people's mindset as well as the Laws, took a different view on the poor, especially poor females. That unfortunately, was the way Life was...all over the World, even here in the States. A Societal-stigma that continued well into the early to mid-20th Century.

Baby farming was a product of the times. Some perpetrators committed heinous crimes against babies, but the state was not that all that interested, until an obvious crime had been committed.
@ladyfarona1988
@ladyfarona1988 2 жыл бұрын
What I always deduce from stories like this is that society punishes and shames women for "indiscretions" (aka having babies out of wedlock) and forces them to give up said children to "redeem" themselves somewhat (they're STILL marked with a scarlet letter, however), and only care about the children once they've been murdered! It's easy to see that the women who killed these children were also influenced by society's idea that bastard children or the children of the poor were of lesser value and thus it was more easy to justify killing them. Had these societal expectations not been so foul and rigid, I think many people's lives would have been lived very differently and in a much better, happier way.
@ladyfarona1988
@ladyfarona1988 2 жыл бұрын
BTW I'm NOT defending any of the women who murdered the children. They CHOSE to kill them and may have done so even if society's rules were different. Some people are just mean.

Hey, at least he stood up for his morals. That didn't mean he had to kill himself. Frances was like many woman of her age - born into a life with few choices of making something of herself - not allowed to go to school or be anything she wanted to be. She was at the mercy of getting pregnant - there was no birth control. I hope people can see the situation through Frances eyes. Look, some women turned to prostitution to eek out a living they were so desperate. I'm not saying any of these alternatives are smart ones, but they had so few options. It's too bad she didn't work in a factory. The whole thing is a sad turn of events.

I think your discussing the suicide of the executioner really shines light on a whole other side of crime and punishment that is generally ignored. I’m sure there were and are many executioners who were psychopaths or extremely callus. However many were also humane individuals who intended to carry out their duties in a way to cause minimal suffering to the condemned. It seems next to impossible for them not to be psychologically affected by carrying out the process of doing away with someone deemed too deviant to live among us (sometimes justifiably so, and sometimes not). Sadly this proved too much for Mr. Jones. I believe this case merited capital punishment because she committing the most heinous crimes against the most helpless and innocent, yet it seems like by insisting on this one more person’s life was destroyed by the unfolding of this case.

There is a very ancient hospital in Rome near the Vatican, on the river Tiber, founded many centuries ago by a Pope who had dreamt a terrifying nightmare. In his dream, an angel had escorted him to a bridge over the river. He then cast a large fishing net into the cold murky depths. The horrifying catch were the skulls of hundreds of babies, drowned by their despairing young mothers, forced and shamed into killing their infants by society's cruel unnatural rules. The Santo Spirito was the first hospital to invent the turning-wheel where mothers could discreetly leave their infants for adoption or care by the convent.

Poor Thomas! You did a great job of painting the background, and showing us that in those times, adults and babies were victims to poverty and struggled to survive.

Thanks, BC. I always enjoy watching your videos. This case, however, made me sad to hear it. Those poor babies. I will never understand hurting or killing babies. It is terrifying to even think about it. Another great job, BC.

What happened to Frances is terrible. I feel really bad for her. All the men she thought she could depend on left her. She could've worked at a factory, but then she wouldn't have anyone to look after her daughter. This is a lesson for all women - don't have babies with a man you can't depend on and don't have children if you can't financially support them. Today there are more options. Times were so much tougher out there for single women and still are. Don't be fooled by some man claiming to be something he isn't. Focus your time on your education and less on what a man can do for you. 9 times out of 10 it's just a smokescreen for disappointment.

It's hard enough now to find childcare -- it must have been worse for a Victorian single mother. Even if a kind employer offered to let a servant's child stay, she might worry what she was exposing her own family to. No wonder baby farming seemed like a solution.

These instances were so horrific. If only there had not been such social stigmas against illegitimate births. A person would think that if a teen mother went to her mother, and was encouraged to keep the baby; this practice might not have been so prevalent. Isn't that what you would say to yours?!

I can remember gawking at her grinning skull and death mask, on display at the Old Melbourne Gaol, in the early seventies when I was a kid. Never did a building instill such a sense of gloom in a boy, believe me. The skulls of Ned Kelly and Frederick Deeming - the latter sawn into halves - were also displayed, and the source of many a nightmare, I expect.

The death mask of the poor old conflicted hangman was also there, but not his skull. I remember scanning the plaster neck for traces of where it was slit with a cut throat razor, but nothing stood out
