I figure the suits are just the sentient machines. They're referred to as "Suits" because their mechanical bodies are things they can discard and replace like "suits". This is in contrast to the digital citizens of The Matrix (programs) who do not have their own physical bodies to interact with the physical world. I've always figured that the machine society in the world of The Matrix has a social hierarchy that places robots above programs.

If you're familiar with Gnostic philosophy the movies are a lot easier to understand. Gnostic texts describe parasitic entities called archons that are a form of AI and constitute a collective. The specialty of these archons is simulation. In The Matrix they're represented by the machines. The architect represents the Demiurge, which is described as a false god in the Gnostic texts (the god of religions, incidentally) which is why he has a white beard. The agents are like the ground troops of the archons. They're dressed in black suits and wear dark glasses like the infamous MIB (men in black); anyone who's done research on the UFO phenomenon knows about them.

Could the suits be everyone who isn't the anomaly? Like it says in the first movie in the first simulation (red dress lady simulation), Morpheus says the agents could be anyone, but what if they WERE everyone deep down and they only appear not to be until activated?

The Architect/Oracle are like the Wachowskis. They created the Matrix. The Suits are like Warner Bros. They fund the creation of the Matrix and everything connected to it, which is all machine life. I don't believe we've ever seen them before and I doubt we have reason to.

The best twist would be if the suits were human. Imagine the real villain behind all of this was humans themselves, maybe commanding machines without them knowing. Kinda like a wizard of oz situation with the great oz just being a man.

Smith didn't die when he turned neo into Smith but had access to the machine mainframe went in and took it over while we saw real world smiths die

I still think the "Suits" could be The Architect and some of his former agents, though we don't need the Father of the Matrix to have lied for this to be the case. He only every agreed to let "the ones who want out" to be freed...and when he said that, both Neo and Trinity were dead; the only two humans the Analyst tried to NOT allow to leave. The Architect was above all else concerned with efficiency, and as the Analyst explained to Neo, his methods were ten times more efficient at keeping humans in the simulation than the previous cycles. So much so that the few humans who did wake up were not viewed as a significant threat and thus mostly left alone until they tried to find Neo. My theory is that after the war and the Architect's surrender, there were conditions to that surrender. The first being that the Architect would keep the Analyst on watch from the outside like he did with the Oracle (the De Ja Vu cat could double as the Architect's eyes and ears on the Analyst). The Analyst would be allowed to conduct his experiments and run the simulation so long as he kept getting good results. This would explain why when Neo and Trinity both break free from the Analyst's control and Smith comes in to complicate things even more, the "Suits" cut off the Analyst's executive privileges and tried to reset the simulation to what it was before; like the sixth simulation from the original trilogy.

I like the theory that it's secretly the architect after all the most tbh. And this is just another expression of designs to keep control over reality with another matrix scheme.

The Analyst says it was 'crazy expensive" to do what hes doing with Neo and Trinity. Expensieve towards what or who? Money wise? What money? Energy wise? What energy? What was the crazy cost?

The Suits are the leaders of the winning faction during the Machine Civil War. They won over those who supported co-existence with redpill humans, motivated by diminishing energetic resources. Given all that, they must be motivated by eficiency in the long term and resourcefulness in times of crisis (otherwise they wouldn't have trusted the Analyst with his initally costly plan). That discards both the Architect and the Oracle to be among them. In a way, the City of Io is not their enemy at all, but the defeated faction of machines, even though certainly some of those whe were defeated are clearly living with humans in Io. Three-way conflict is certain. Taking all that in mind, we can imagine the Suits wouldn't waste energy in ineficient physical bodies in the real world. Through violence, they made a statement against those who justified less energy for their civilization, therefore they would live in a machine-only perfect Matrix, a Paradise, a world of their own where they live out of the rest of the Machines effort, far from the dirty physical reality. A Machine oligarchy, hypocrital to City of 01's original ideas. That sound like the franchise ultimate enemy.

For the best movie making, and to set up a 25 year "surprise," it would make the most sense for the "suits" to be human beings. Let's not skip past the common sense to start. Do you call A.I. programs "suits?" A "program" like the Analyst, would call a man, a suit. This series closes the best if the humans did it to the humans and there really was no machine "bad guy." Oh, and that's kinda what's playing out in real life with the "suits / assholes" of this realm, acting as god and making people believe all that is happening in the world is "organic" and just randomly came to be, when every bit of it is planned out.

The matrix has such awful Canon. They go from being individuals to a hive mind several times in the same movie. So many examples of the hive mind and so many examples of them all being individuals. When neo made a deal with the machines they said "we don't need you". We. Keyword. But it really just comes down to awful writing. Especially in the dialogue. Great story and visuals but crap writing.

I know the only true answer! It is YOU! You control the MAtrix and even control what we think about it ;)
