Matrix 4 should have been a prequel/sequel. For me it would have worked better if they delved into many of the stories within "Animatrix", mainly the very start and origin of the Machines vs Humans. Animatrix painted an interesting picture.... the machines tried, but humans were the ones that brought about the end of the world... The earth being covered in darkness was due to humans blotting out the sun in an attempt to kill all machines since their energy came from light. Didnt work at all. Things became very political. wars.etc The could have delved into the origins of the war.... the could have delved into Morpheus for the first time discovring the truth. Imagine recreating the horror of someone discovering that this world isnt real. Morpheus and Trinity were on the MOST WANTED list of the world. The entire world wanted them and they were painted as extreme terrorists, when really.... they discovered the truth first. it could have segued into the MANY Neos that came before... there was like 13 Neos before the final Keanu one... could have shed light on that... could have really been a gritty and fresh matrix styles movie about the past, that leads into the future.. ending with Keanu finally being revealed and the search for him hidden away by machines.. Could have all been extremely epic

Even with the machines' assistance, significant gaps remain. A more plausible explanation is that the real world is merely another layer of the Matrix, conserving energy by creating a simulated reality where individuals believe they are free when, in reality, they remain bound.

We don't get to see how much detail they gave Cypher before he was unplugged. We did see how much info Neo was given and it wasn't much. He wasn't told he'd be living like a mole underground and have to eat grey grool. He wasn't told that the machines had an impossibly enormous advantage. He wasn't told that the best case scenario was that the machines would let their tiny enclave under the ground continue to eek out a bare bones existence.

This all depends on your outlook on life. Is it better to live in hardship and reality or is it better to live in a comfortable dream/lie. IMO you might as well be dead if you would choose the dream.
