James is a hero. Not many would’ve stepped up and did what he did. I mean, imagine tackling a crazy butt naked dude, let alone one that you just watched murder several people and is still armed?! That’s just extraordinary bravery. I’ve heard that he’s kind of beat himself up with some survivors guilt and that’s a shame. He doesn’t like being called a “hero” but he is. I hope he can come to terms with that, eventually. I’d like to say I’d have done the same as he did but realistically none of us know how we’d react in such a violent, surreal situation. I wish James and his family nothing but the best in this life. ❤

Thank you for this comment!!! On a serious note, I strongly believe his father must of known how serious his mental state was!! The police took away all his firearms because of his actions. His father assured the officers if given back to him he would then have them (the firearms) secured. Instead he gave all of them back to his mentally insane son!!! Hence with all this said and the father’s actions I feel he should be held accountable!!! Like 4 counts of involuntary manslaughter as well as some charges that have to do with failing to lock up the weapons ect. Travis’ dad makes me SO angry!!!!!! He knew that his son was extremely sick and he gave him his guns back?!? Like….why??? Maybe he was scared that Travis would come and kill him and his wife if he didn’t give the guns back?? That’s the only possible plausible reasoning I can even try to justify in my mind, and even then…it’s a stretch. That boy never should’ve been able to own a firearm to begin with. Period. I’m all for the 2nd amendment and I’m a gun owning momma…but our background check systems are faulty and anyone with diagnosed mental illness/paranoia/tendencies for self harm or harm to others/ or any involuntary psychiatric commitment history should not be allowed to own a firearm. Now, will that stop them from killing someone if they are hell bent on killing? Absolutely not, as most anything can be turned into a deadly weapon if the intent is there, including one’s own bare hands. But you’re not going to create the same kind of carnage, so fast, without a gun. It’s just so dangerous to have guns, especially freaking assault rifles, in the hands of people who can’t even control their own thoughts. It’s just a sad story. I watched the victim impact statements of the loved ones of those that Travis killed and it made me cry. Those poor people. The victims were all such great people by all accounts. It’s so incredibly tragic and I think it could’ve been prevented.

His family seemed to think his mental health wasn’t a big deal and he was fine but going through some phase. He I’m sure was terrified throughout this whole time- he truly believed everything he was saying and truly felt like everyone was out to get him and that there was some conspiracy against him and that he was being stalked by Taylor swift. Everyone who had an opportunity and moral obligation to get him help and didn’t is partially to blame for this. There were SO many signs. But no one took any of it seriously, or maybe they just didn’t care. It’s sick and it’s sad to see. This man was suffering, and he was having delusions. Because no one helped him, the delusions got really dangerous.

The legal definition of insanity also has nothing to do with mental health issues…instead it means that the person has to be found to not know the difference between right and wrong. That’s it. So unless you can prove intent at the time of the crime with evidence you can’t prove insanity. It’s why it’s almost never successful in being used.

I think it’s because when u have that level of obsession it can be a symptom of a psychosis and manic episodes. But it also needs to be other symptoms with the pre planning. Like erratic behavior and unreasonable thought process. So unfortunately courts tend to just throw it on a case without really caring about if the criminal has enough symptoms for it to be insanity. So it’s often used incorrectly in both senses of someone who isn’t insane is labeled as insane and someone who is insane is just sent to regular prison
@MissLexxxInStereo
@MissLexxxInStereo 11 ай бұрын
No. It met the medical definition of insanity…but not the legal. Showing pre planning and running showed he knew he was doing wrong. That’s all they need to meet the legal threshold to prove he was “sane”. It’s not the medical threshold

As someone with a schizoaffective disorder I have a lot of sympathy for what he was going through. I've had really scary thoughts of hurting people, but knowing that schizophrenia runs in my family I could tell I needed help and got on meds and in counseling and am now doing so much better. I can't imagine going through what he was going through without having any idea what was going on with himself and not a single person trying to get him proper help. That doesn't lessen the pain of innocent lives being lost, that's absolutely terrible. But he definitely should have been treated in an institution to get his mental health in check before going to trial. I'm glad his dad is getting some repercussions for his part too, he had so much responsibility in this imo. He definitely should have gotten his son help YEARS before this all happened and definitely shouldn't have put weapons back in his hands 🙄

The police can only do so much. They aren’t mental health professionals nor are they meant to be. The blame, here, should fall squarely on the shoulders of his wealthy mommy and daddy and the judges who ultimately make the call to keep people like Travis locked up. I get vibes that his dad was more worried about their family’s reputation than Travis’ mental health. I also think daddy’s money got travis out of a whole hell of a lot of trouble that would’ve had people with less financial means locked up quick, fast and in a hurry! Travis broke multiple laws and absolutely should’ve earned some jail if not prison time…but he always managed to get off with a slap on the wrist. Money talks.

@@AlaFrigginBama the police have everything to do with the lack of action taken when he committed crimes, not just the judges. lazy police work was still involved. the police have resources they can use when they have a person with severe mental illness, but they often just act like "this isn't my problem" because they simply don't want to. people with mental illness are so often neglected by the entire system. I'm SMI (severely mentally ill, a classification from the state of Arizona, similar to disability, where they provide mental health care and other resources) and have been in mental hospitals many times. Not to mention the fallout to all of their loved ones and the trauma that the people who were in that Waffle House will have to live with for the rest of their lives. the miscarriage of justice in this case is absolutely infuriating. he was clearly sick, he clearly needed help, and he clearly committed this awful crime while in the midst of a delusion that we cannot even begin to understand. the lack of care for such a seriously ill person is ultimately what caused this crime. but what’s more surprising to me is that he wasn’t declared not guilty by reason of insanity. the whole system ignored this man’s illness at every possible turn, even after he’d already snapped and become a murderer, and now four families are left grieving the loss of innocent people who were taken too soon. this could’ve been stopped. it _should’ve_ been stopped.

As someone who has been in the delusional state he is, he knew what the fuck he was doing. MURDER is not an oopsie people do because they're delusional. 99% of us never murder people. His delusions are perfectly understandable for those of us who have actually experienced severe mental health issues but murder is where we no longer understand. He wasn't insane. He did preplan it. He sat outside the building for 4 minutes before he got out of his truck. Those are a lot of minutes to sit still for. He knew. Don't make excuses and pull a sob story for this dude.
@666_cthulhu
@666_cthulhu 11 ай бұрын
@@annamelanie6494 i’m definitely not gonna excuse what he did, but i don’t think planning in advance necessarily means he _wasn’t_ delusional. it sounds like he was living in a constant state of delusion for a long time leading up to this. hell, he even put a UFO in his plans for the murder spree (not that that really proves anything - i just find it interesting). then again, there isn’t really a clear explanation for how his understanding of the world would’ve tied into his actions (like, idek how he justified it in his own head), so i truly have no idea what his motive could’ve been. but idk, either way, people are dead - people who _shouldn’t_ be dead. it really is frustrating that he wasn’t taken care of sooner. i think i just find it difficult to understand ‘bad’ people; it’s so unrelatable to think that some people do awful things _just because._ i mean, there must’ve been at least a little bit of that ‘badness’ in him since, like you said, most seriously mentally ill people never hurt anyone, but i really can’t comprehend the burning desire to hurt innocent people like he did. ig violent crime is just incredibly strange to me :/

This reminds me of when I was in a psychiatric facility and an older patients had similar delusions about David Bowie. It started as infatuation and belief that they were in a relationship, then a belief that he was stalking her, the doctors and the nurses at the hospital worked for him, and he'd killed her dog.

This story is absolutely baffling to me. Why did the family do nothing to help Travis from the start? Like as soon as he went to his fathers work place with a gun and to the pool it should have been concluded that he needed help mentally. I also don’t understand how the people in the mental facility let him go and did nothing like they diagnosed him with schizophrenia and just let him go?? My heart goes out to the families of the victims. It sucks that so many people who had such bright futures were taken away from this world so brutally. The father needs life in jail too cuz idk what he was thinking by giving the guns back to Travis. Insane case thank you Hailey for covering this.

His parents shld have pushed mental health treatment more I mean he was cleeeerly delusional but in the end often the treatment for skitsophrenia isssss medication take pills....no dillusions!!!but the fact his dad gave his clearly sick son back his weapons is downright criminal!!;
@AlaFrigginBama
@AlaFrigginBama 11 ай бұрын
Agreed. I honestly feel like his dad should’ve caught some prison time for giving Travis those weapons. He knew his son was EXTREMELY sick. There’s just no excuse. And they were well off, financially…they could’ve had Travis placed into a residential facility that most can’t afford. I think Travis was more of a “out of sight, out of mind” type thing for his family. The fact that he even had access to an AR with his lengthy mental health instability is… Awful. I feel like this tragedy could’ve been prevented. My heart breaks for the victims and their loved ones.

Hi Hailey! I’m a new subscriber of yours and I just want to say I appreciate how you told this story. My brother has paranoid schizophrenia so I always get a bit nervous when a true crime story is about someone with schizophrenia. Luckily for my brother he has a lot of help from professionals and we’ve found a medication that works for him, but it really is a very sad thing to watch your loved one suffer with delusions. So I wanted to say thank you for bringing this story to us without villainizing schizophrenia or making all schizophrenic people seem like they’re all capable of murder. My brother wouldn’t hurt a fly, but I know first hand how debilitating schizophrenia can be for people. I just wanted to say thank you for shedding light on the disorder without making them out to *ALL* be monsters, even though the man in this story definitely committed monstrous acts.

Anyone who refers to themselves as a “swiftie” needs their head checked, honestly. Unless they are like 12. I like her music but the whole groupie, toxic fandom thing is weird to me. Especially with a bunch of grown adults!! I know it’s nothing new and every genre has their fanatics, I mean..look back at beatle-mania. I know my mom was weirdly fascinated with elvis to the point that I can’t hear any of his music now bc I heard WAY TOO MUCH of it growing up and it just annoys me, now. Like she played his music so much that it ruined it for me. People get just as weirdly obsessed with actors, athletes, political figures and “influencers” (🙄), too. I think it’s unhealthy and odd. Being obsessed with someone who you’ll never know personally, who doesn’t even know you exist, is weird!!! Pigeonholing yourself to one thing is really sad, too. It’s much more fun to broaden your horizons and have an appreciation for the arts of all kinds. That’s just me, though. To each their own.

Honestly.. I wish it wasn't like this but so often we overlook these things in our friends and loved ones because we just love them so much. My boyfriend of 7 years has schizophrenia and after 9 overdoses, 2 attempts at taking his own life, the health care system started to take his concerns seriously. .. I wish these poor people didn't have to be traumatized and others lose their lives because our shifty shifty shitttty health care system..

That´s the scary thing about psychosis, the things you see, hear and think BECOME your reality, it´s not like you´re imagining things, your eyes actually see the hallucinations and the people around you telling you you´re crazy and what you´re saying doesn´t make any sense seem more and more like liars to you. When my boyfriend was in active psychosis, he was convinced his flatmates were breaking into his room, stealing the most random items and hiding his stuff to "make him go crazy" and no matter how I tried to approach it, he could not be convinced otherwise. Luckily he wasn´t alone in this and I kept a close eye on him until he eventually had to go to the hospital, but I can see how things like that can happen when these sorts of mental breaks are ignored and left untreated. To add to this, all the people looking down on him, not taking these delusions seriously, must´ve made the situation so much worse in his mind. We need much more awareness around schizophrenia and psychosis but most importantly, we have to get rid of the nasty stigma around it. My heart goes out to the victims and their loved ones
