It's ironic that Hal Holbrook is explaining about the Pueblo incident since he starred in a 1973 TV movie about the Pueblo. He played the ship's captain.

I sat behind Holbrook at a Jewish deli in Westwood once. He did not order a Schweppes Bitter Lemon with a twist, nor did he lazily smoke a cigar while telling witty stories.

I always thought it was interesting listening to How Holbrook talk about the Pueblo incident considering he starred as the commander of the ship itself also fun fact the Pueblo incident was the inspiration for the Star Trek episode the Enterprise incident

I've always loved this scene except for one part. When Hal Holbrook mentions that the North Korean's may have causus belli, the writers felt the need to have President Bartlett explain it means "cause for war" and then adds "a little thing called Latin." Leo is a former Air force officer who would be well aware of what causus belli means. It was meant as exposition for the audience of course but it was clumsily done and it felt like they were speaking down to the audience. A small thing but it's one of those things that takes you out of the moment and shows the sausage being made without any need. Still a great scene though.

One of the critiques of Bartlet thrown at him by his enemies is he is often smug and superior and brags about his intellect. He does. Not as much as they say he does but he absolutely does. In this case though he is nervous and insecure around a guy he respects but knows doesn't like him very much so he is over compensating.

I want to send a thank ypu to some of the comments here about this scene. I was nice to read how the writing of the show was. And it was also nice to read comments about have history elements written into the show. And how a President has to deal with career governmental who know and lived before President Bartel in the show became president. President Barlet in the show was smart but there were other people who were just as smart as well. It was a great show and I still admire the actors as well.

Trust the captain, trust the crew. I'd trust more in the fact that there is a near 0 chance that North Korea and it's tech that is out of date by 5 decades could get a whiff of what was our most advanced submarine at the time. Even now, there are very few countries in the world that would have a chance at finding a Seawolf sub that doesn't want to be found.

Not that Bartlett should know, but the people who drive submarines call themselves "submarine-ers" not "sub-mariners". The "i" is pronounced as a long "e", the same as the boat.

At first when it said Martin Sheen and how Holbrook reunite I I just remembered that they both played lovers in what is considered one of the most groundbreaking movies on the subject of homosexuality called that certain summer

@@ericsniper9843 I think so. I do believe there is official paperwork wherein the Senate gives standing approval to the Vice President to act as president if need be. By that point, though, the situation would be so bad that, if the Secretary of State or Defense is POTUS, the Senate’s approval or disapproval won’t matter; they just need someone to lead the country through the crisis. To date, it has not gotten to that point; if the President is incapacitated (usually for some kind of medical procedure), the Vice President steps up. Kamala Harris, for a recent example, was de facto President for a while because President Biden had to undergo a colonoscopy (if I have that detail correct). Once Biden was done, he resumed his duties, and she went back to hers. Dick Cheney did the same for George W. Bush, and George H.W. Bush did the same after Ronald Reagan was shot. (Reagan survived, thankfully.) In summary, there is a Presidential Line of Succession for when things go really, really bad and the government has to continue.
