Which country would've won the Cold War, the USSR (Soviet Russia) or the USA? In this video, we battle test bayonets from each of these nations to see if we can retroactively can answer that question, all the while hoping we never see this war happen in reality.

Wow that closing statement hit hard, really good stuff, couldn't agree more. As another guy pointed out the other Soviet bayonets are much nicer, but the Russian ones are very expensive, I only got one because it was a bring back from Iraq.. Stamped for the Izhevsk factory, surprising because most Iraqi AK are either domestic or Yugo. In the Soviet Union each nation had specific designs they produced, AK, bayonet, etc. but it was up to them to produce them themselves without Russian control, so quality actually varied allot, some places like East Germany were known for generally making really nice kit, and some of the poorer areas like Romanian where not known for high quality production. Even though the M9 is a bit more refined (and much newer) I have to give credit to the Soviets, it was a really clever design and the idea of having a utility knife with the wire cutters came from them first, the M9 in essence was a American copy of the Soviet idea. When the soviets first fielded these knifes (all the way back in 1960!) the US was still using the m4/m5/m7 which is just a double edged dagger essentially, good bayonet and a decent fighting knife but useless as anything else. Soviets actually innovated allot when it came military technology which I don't think is recognized often, first modern mass use of IFV (BMP series) First official paratrooper units, all the way back in 1930, first nation to use the concept of a "Designated marksman" at the squad level. etc. Edit: Oh also something worth pointing out, lack of sharpness of the Soviet bayonets is actually really historically typical. Most nations around the world factory produced military knifes and swords completely dull, very much intentionally. Final sharpening was to be done before actual combat, by units armorers. This in Britain was always known as "service sharpening" so when you find most old swords or knifes if they are dull, they most likely served in peace time or were surplus. The reason why this was done was to decrease wear on the blades (many scabbards are metal or have metal inserts and will dull blades over time), and to discourage drunken angry soldiers from using them in anger. When you find for instance a old sword that has a original service sharpen it can be quite a bit more valuable as it means it was likely actually carried in a active war, or at least on deployment in a dangerous location such as in colonial areas, like British occupied India. The American knifes coming sharpened was a bit of a anomaly, but many American knifes do come sharp, the M7s I have handled factory new from surplus lots are very sharp. However when you go back to WW2 allot of American surplus M1 Garand bayonets are quite literally duller than a butter knife. So when you find a old bayonet like that, that is sharp and it looks to be a very old sharpening it may have a much more interesting story to tell compared to a surplus one that came out of a wooden box decades after the war.

The AK bayonet you got there was made in Romania (you can tell by the leather belt loop, bakelite marbling and markings). These Romanian bayonets are regarded as the worst quality of the AK family, the manufacturing is crude and the materials are low quality. I don’t want to imply that it would significantly change the results of your testing (the M9 was a much more refined design overall) but you would probably be happier with a Polish, East German or Soviet one (those are usually much sharper and well finished). Thank you for the video and have a great day, kind regards from Czech Republic.

It would have been more interesting if they were given a fresh edge before the tests. They are cutting weapons/tools with tests done on cutting ability and edge retention. This is like comparing two similar used cars, running tests on fuel mileage, and not filling up either car first. Naturally the car that happened to have the most fuel in it would have an unfair advantage.

@@poolee77 There's no myth to it. We were not permitted to have a cutting edge on our M9's. The OKC3S was fielded as a combat knife foremost, and as a bayonet second. Armorers would perform edge checks on the M9's and dull them. If they could cut paper, they were considered too sharp.
@poolee77
@poolee77 11 ай бұрын
@@beltfed4624 but it is a myth. There are no laws against sharpening your bayonet. The M9 was issued with a sharping stone on the back of the sheath the same as the OK3CS. I tried keeping my bayonet sharp but the steel is crap and won’t hold an edge for long. Your armorers likely wanted to prevent wear and replacement by just not having you use them.

@@oursimplestorychannel First, pretty good video. Please don’t make my comments belittle it in any way. However, the bayonet was made somewhere else other than USSR. Which means it was not built within confines of the Soviet Military Industry with its strict standards and testing. But within some other country with its own industrial capabilities and limitation. Is it made with same materials, is it heat treated the same way, are the tolerances kept, is it tested with the same rigor, etc. Just like the rifles (AK) themself that are made in different countries are not the same. Like the Egyptian Maadi is differen from East German MpKi or Romanian SAR or WASR is diferent from Polish AKM, etc. I am not even talking about Chinese Type 56 and Yugoslav M70. All of these rifles are close variants and built off the same set of blueprints (exception being the Yugo M70) and yet there are different in overall finish, quality and even performance. Same applies to the gun’s accessories including bayonet. That is all I am saying. One more thing the M9 is more contemporary to the AKM Type 2 rather than Type 1. By the time the M9 came about, the Soviets have already fazed Type 1’s out. The correct comparison would have been M7 vs. Type 1. And I can with most certainty say that M7 would win.

I strongly disagree I own both and used both in camping. The ak bayonet has a better edge and easier to maintain than the M9. The M9 just has length and weight, if you put an edge on it doesn’t last long so most of the time it struggles to cut wet toilet paper. The M9 is just an expensive, heavy, and enlarged imitation of the AK bayonet. I have the M9 and the M10 tanto Ontario made the M10 has an even worse edge and it’s partially serrated. They should’ve just made the entire cutting edge serrated. The AK bayonet that I have is similar to the one in the video.
