Emperor Palpatine's Return/Contingency in Star Wars: Episode 9: The Rise of Skywalker was met with a lot of mixed feelings. Some Star Wars Fans loved the fact that they got to see Ian McDiarmid play Emperor Palpatine/Darth Sidious yet again. Other fans were unhappy that Darth Sidious came back to life because it ruined the sacrifice of Darth Vader/Anakin Skywalker in Star Wars: Episode 6: Return of the Jedi. Darth Vader/Anakin Skywalker "killed" Emperor Palpatine in Return of the Jedi, but somehow he returned in The Rise of Skywalker. If you are familiar with the lore, you may know about Palpatine's Contingency. His Contingency plan was a plan that would occur in the event of his death. There are many moving part to his contingency, including Operation Cinder. In this video, I go through many aspects of the Star Wars Canon, including the books and comics, to tie together how exactly Palpatine returned in The Rise of Skywalker, and what his contingency was about.
This video is an adaptation of a paper written by hanotsrii, here is a link to that paper: palpatinian.weebly.com/the-con...

There's a kind of ambiguity in canon about whether Palpatine really wanted Kylo as a host. It seems like he only considered Rey suitable, and used reverse psychology on Kylo in the same way he feigned a motive with the Nemoidians in TPM (Sign the treaty!:Kill the girl!). It seems he wanted Kylo more as his Sith apprentice/errand boy.

I'm gonna be that guy. Palpy returning makes perfect sense. "Somehow Palpatine has returned....things only the Sith knew" is everything we need. Let's get real, shall we? When talking Star Wars. And by SW I mean THE FILMS...not shows, books, reference guides, games, or comics...THE FILMS - exposition has always been left at bare minimum. The OT was DESIGNED as to not have tons of expository dialogue and explanations for everything. Even the PT follows this, just somewhat to a lesser extent. Do we really want or need some jumble of techno/spiritual babble explaining how Palpy survived? Really? The most acclaimed scene in the PT and one of the most acclaimed scenes in the saga in general is the speech Palpy gives Anakin at the opera in ROTS. Y'know, where Palpy deadass tells us he knows how to cheat death using the Dark Side? How much more blatantly obvious can you get? We've known Palps knows dark Sith magic for years and years. When he finally uses it suddenly it's not enough for people?

*“The dark side of the Force is a pathway to many abilities some consider to be…unnatural.”* When Palpatine said that to Kylo I immediately knew what he meant all the way back in Revenge of the Sith when he talked with Ben’s grandfather about the possibility of using the dark side to cheat death itself. It would’ve been so easy to have Palpatine explain it in an exposition dump of meaningless mumbo jumbo. I have my issues with the Rise of Skywalker but I appreciate how it knows the audience is smart enough to pick up on these. Sometimes all it takes is just one line.

@@thegoldman25 I have problems with it, it makes Anakin's return so pointless if he isn't taking part in helping in his defeat of second coming because being a FUCKING VOICE. I really hate how they did Anakin in the sequels but how they treated luke and leia as if they are LITERAL gods. The writers of the sequels just hated the prequels for letting us have a moment where Anakin would help out. He was basically created by palpatine, so I feel that he should have defeated him since force ghosts can now interact with the physical world and you know... he is the chosen one and nearly everything to do with star wars connects back to him in someway.

I felt the film did a good job at leaving clues at how he returned, while keeping it ambiguous enough to not diminishing the mystique of Sith arcana; He’s surrounded by cloning pods maintained by Sith cultists, hooked up to medical equipment, and the film later establishes the idea of spirit transference to willing or vulnerable hosts. The Death Star Destroyers look like OT Star Destroyers to indicate that Palpatine had these plans in his back pocket for years. If he was just chilling on the Sith Throne as if nothing happened, I’d be more annoyed that we didn’t get a more thorough explanation, but looking at his decrepit body, you can tell he went through hell and back. Point is, they did more to explain it than “sOmEhOw.”

@@thegoldman25 Another thing I disagree with was that Rey got off of becoming all of the Sith because she killed Palpatine out of love; I think it’s intentional that Rey assumed a defensive stance and merely deflected Palpatine’s power back at him. Palpatine’s own power did himself in. It’s a brilliant echo to Luke’s last stand on Crait.
@buek14
@buek14 9 ай бұрын
I don't think his return is a big deal, I'm ok with it. Darth Bane, Vitiate, and Marka Ragnos attempted spirit transfer with more or less success, hell, his master Darth Plagueis was an architect in similar matters - and cloning was also a huge part of Star Wars Legedns as well - so why couldn't Palpatine try it? Some say his return destroys the Prophecy of the Chosen One but let's be real here, both canon and EU did that already and it was always a vague thing that nobody really took seriously neither in and out of universe. Problem is Palps told his plan to the only person who could ruin it - that being Rey. I'm not a fan of the opening crawl telling about him messaging the entire galaxy that he's alive. What strategy is that? Wouldn't it be more sensible to attack without warning?

Well technically a resistance mechanic said that Palpatine probably cloned himself and that Palpatine said the dark side of the force is a pathway to many abilities some consider unnatural, but in my opinion that’s still not good enough (even for casual viewers as well) Also I liked TROS but it annoyed me that Palpatine Return made his contingency in the books and comics and battlefront 2 campaign (operation cinder, letting only worthy imperials travel to the unknown regions like Sloane cuz he wanted the Empire to die with him, and last Jedi incredible cross sections stating how Palpatine had shipyards built in the unknown regions that the first order inherited) a bit annoying but I guess Palpatine wasn’t sure his only clone using old technology would 100% work (which it kinda didn’t as he was rapidly decaying and needed that machine to hold him) Anyway, sorry for long comments, keep up good work

This is all so cool and I love how comics and new lore have affected older Star Wars such as palpatine in return of the Jedi. We just now know that he was trying to take Luke’s body, not just turn him as it’s been for decades. I wish the sequels had actually gone into this story rather than skimming it and rushing through a lot. This would have made the sequels so much better. Focus less on characters such as rose and Finn and more on palpatine plan and how it influenced all 3 films

When I first saw the movie and it revealed Palpatine to have returned, I immediately know that his soul was within a clone because that's how they did in Dark Empire and made no sense to change it. Thus I was never minded the lack of a proper explanation within the film itself as I already guess how he'd returned. I also always guessed that Palpatine would return once more after I learned about the board strokes of the Contingency. My reasoning being that Palpatine would never create another empire if he wasn't the one ruling it, thus I guessed that he was behind the First Order.

I get that his return makes sense on paper when you include video game & book source material, but that doesn't excuse how his return was poorly explained in TROS. The saga films and live action shows are the main source of Star Wars info for a lot of people who don't read the novels or play the games. So for them his return will still be confusing until a show or film explains it.

If Palpatine tasked Ochi to apprehend Rey when she was just a kid, why would he want her dead in TLJ? If he knew about her when she was a little girl then he didn't only come to find out about her when "there was an awakening in The Force" either. Edit- also, if Palpatine had such a strong connection with Kylo (evidenced by him being all the voices inside his head) as well as Snoke being a proxy for Palpatine, why wouldn't Palpatine be aware of the Force Dyad when they're together in Snoke's throne room? Why wouldn't he have become aware of it when the connection between Rey & Kylo was first established in TFA? Somehow he only becomes aware of it when they're standing together right in front of him? Also, how is Kylo aware of the dyad before Palpatine supposedly becomes aware of it?

From what we've seen in The Mandalorian, the Imperial Remnant was still trying to perfect their cloning techniques years after ROTJ. The twisted bodies we see in the vats seem to clearly be meant to be prototype versions of Snoke. So it's weird that in the Vader comics there are already much more developed Snokes in the vats on Exegol during the period of Empire Strikes Back if I'm following you correctly. That just seems to make everything all the more convoluted. Also if the Imperial Remnant/beginnings of the First Order were not in league with Palpatine, then why would they still be working on making a suitable clone for him years after his defeat? Edit- the cloning subplots in Mando as well as likely Bad Batch season 2 have me excited for things to come. I think Filoni & co. might draw inspiration from both Dark Empire & Heir to the Empire with both the upcoming seasons for these shows. The Ahsoka series could very well tie into all that as well, as it's all but confirmed that Thrawn will play a role in that show. It'll be quite the trick if they're able to blend these fan-favorite Legends stories with the new canon in a way that enriches the Sequel Trilogy to the extent Clone Wars added to the Prequels.

I just finished watching the whole video. But I do have a quick question. You mention that Palpy wanted to rule through Ren by transferring his essence into him. And I do think that was his intent until he discovered that Rey was still alive. But her force powers only started to manifest at the end of TFA and into TLJ which (at most) probably only took place over a few weeks. So it might not have been until the end of the events of the TLJ that he put 2+2 together and realized who she was. And then made her his priority again. He might have had his eye on Ben. But when his son fathered a child who was his exact match he tried to get his hands on his granddaughter. Until she disappeared and he focused on Ren again. Whatever the case, I am guessing that a host body with his genetics would work easier and be more successful than someone who was un-related, which is why I think that he wanted Rey. But great analysis and video! I never understood why Snoke was killed off like that, put now it makes complete sense.

I'm not exactly a fan of the sequels, but I appreciate them trying to fill in the plot holes they dug when making the last film. Good documentary, but I will point out that there was never meant to be a single "Last Jedi," as you describe Rey at 36:16, but it is actually meant to be the plural Jedi. I only discovered this myself when I saw the Spanish title was "Los Ultimos Jedi". I know it's a small nitpick, but I just like to spread awareness of this fact.

I think the Sith Eternal will be covered more in the Star Wars Hidden Empire comic series. In Star Wars Hidden Empire volume 4, Sidious and Vader started their final showdown against Qi'ra and Crimson Dawn at the Amaxine Station. Qi'ra asked the Knights of Ren for help because the Sith are targeting the Knights of Ren for helping Qi'ra and for raiding Vader's Castle. I think the Knights of Ren will betray Qi'ra and be recruited by Sidious to be his enforcers and be part of his First Order and Snoke Plan. It is likely the Sith Lord in the Fermata Cage is the original "Snoke" before the cloning of Snoke began. This would make sense as the Amaxine Station became one of Snoke's personal sanctuaries. Sidious is the Emet Selch (kzfaq.info/get/bejne/p8lglMyW2LqddGg.html&ab_channel=Daktyl) of Star Wars. It is unknown if Sidious actually died in Rise of Skywalker and we know Matt Smith was rumored to play a young Sidious. It was also never confirmed with the Sith Eternal really fell. Sidious never cared for the Known Galaxy and his primary interest is the Unknown Galaxy. It is unknown if Sidious made allies in the Unknown Galaxy such as the Grysk (Canon's Yuuzhan Vong), Light Side Entities, and Dark Side Entities. Sidious will always be remembered as the Sithiest Sith and the greatest Sith in existence.

The frustrating thing about all of this, is there are some really interesting ideas here. Like, a story revolving around Palpatine's secret contingency plan/the dark side of the force as it deals with resurrection could have been really cool if it was well developed properly. As interesting as some of these details might be, you know they were all just made up after the movie came out to try and fill in plot holes left by ROS shitty script. At the end of the day JJ just rushed out a script because he didn't know what else to do. I can't pretend like this was all thought out ahead of time when it clearly wasn't. It wasn't the concept of Palpy coming back that sucked, it was the botched execution. And that blame rests on disney as a whole for not planning out the three movies like they should have.

I am so surprised why so many people are angry or have problem with Palpatine's returne. He acually told Anakin that he knew how to cheat death, because of that his returne made perfect sense to me. Force ghosts exist, I am sure Obi Wan and Yoda could've come back if they would've used the dark side and cloning tech. Palpatine says to Grevious (the robot with a beatig heart and two arms he could split into four arms) after the robot mentions Dooku's death "I have a new prentice," he even feels the need to metion that the prentice is much younger than Dooku, why would that matter if he didn't plan on using that younger body in some way. This is one of few dialogs in the Prequels that make any sense.

@@thegoldman25 probably. Luke and Leia being twins came out of nowhere after episode IV as well as Anakin being Vader and therefor the father of Luke and Leia. The originals were not planned anymore than the Sequels, so lack of planning is nothing new when it comes to Star Wars. I know you are aware of this, I just wanted to point it out. I have my problems with ROS, Palpatine's return is not one of those problems. ROS is my least favourite Sequel movie, I believe it could've been so much better but I am ok with what we got. I think the time limit (how long the movie could be) is one of the biggest problems, I think there wasn't enough time to finish this story in a propper way. The Sequels are my favourite trilogy, TLJ is the best one in my opinion, it is acually my favourite movie. You pointed out all the reasons for why I love that movies so much in a video you made. Maul had already been replaced by the time he shows up in the clone wars. He was not apprenticed to palps at the same time as Dooku. @@thegoldman25 Yeah we do it was the death of qui-gon that was the final straw for dooku. @macangaill
@macangaill 3 жыл бұрын
@@ybmsimba2410 not exactly correct. It's clear from both Dooku - Jedi Lost AND Master and Apprentice that Dooku had already been flirting with the darkside (and no, I am not implying he was a Sith initiate at that point). It's also clear that The Clone Wars episode "The Lost One" clearly shows that Dooku was working with Sidious during Vallorum's chancellorship. Furthermore, Dave Filoni confirms this in an interview about the episode. You can see it here: www.starwars.com/video/the-lost-missions-q-and-a-sifo-dyas-and-the-sith. So yes, Sidious had two apprentices (in Maul and Dooku) at the same time...straight from the horse's mouth. Regarding, the Sith assassins and the Inquisitors, you are correct they are not Sith in the sense that they were Sith Lords (that's not the point that is being made). When the Sith Eternal cult was revealed in The Rise of Skywalker sooo many people got up-in-arms about how the concept violated the Rule of Two as if it were some sort of unforgivable sin. The point my piece and, in-turn, this video is trying to make is that DESPITE the Rule of Two, Sidious and other Sith Lords always had agents working on their behalf INCLUDING Force-sensitive agents like Ventress, Oppress, the Inquisitorius, and the Knights of Ren. So having a cabal of Sith cultists doesn't violate the Rule of Two anymore than those earlier examples. You're also not exactly correct on Dooku's intentions. It's pretty clear throughout the Clone Wars that he had designs to usurp Sidious (per Sith tradition) and that he intended to use Savage as a tool in that design (especially after Sidious told him to kill Ventress).

@@zekenator8988 this I agree with. It's clear that LFL laid seeds of the possibility of Palpatine's return throughout canon prior to the development of The Rise of Skywalker. So in that sense, I have no problem that they essentially adopted the Legends "Dark Empire" storyline in a film. My largest issue is that narratively when continuing from the previous two films it was just JARRING. If they wanted this to be the endgame, then they really needed a showrunner to oversee the whole story of the sequel trilogy. IMHO, this is mostly on JJ. He should have focused on continuing storythreads organically from TLJ rather than trying to shoehorn ideas on what HE THOUGHT would happen when developing TFA. Instead, The Rise of Skywalker spends much of its time answering questions we already had answers to from TLJ and suddenly bringing the Emperor back. That being said, I've made my peace with it. Ian McDiarmid is a Galactic-treasure and was a highlight of the film for me. I love him as Palpatine.

I guess that's what Star Wars is to some people, visual versions of wookieepedia entries rather than stories about emotions and characters with lots of elements of the story left ambiguous and mysterious.
