It is...I relate to this song so much...my fiance passed away in bed right next to me while I was asleep from an OD after 3 years clean and my world ended overnight...the worst night of my life... fast forward six months and my first love (& vice versa) contacted me and although I didn't want anything to do with another man I always still loved my first and he was the one who got away..I know my fiance would want me to be happy and if I skipped the opportunity I may never be... so we ended up getting back together and help heal each other bc he had gotten divorced from the mother of his 3 kids after she cheated 13x(that he has proof of)...I was still grieving and he was and has been nothing but 1000% supportive...I cried and broke down every single day and talked about my late fiance nonstop and he never once complained... it's been 3 years and I am still grieving and bring him up every day but there's no jealousy bc he knows that no matter what he's not a threat bc he's not here and if he hadn't passed, me and him would have never gotten back together... but the dream line is my favorite bc I'm a very vivid dreamer and my fiance absolutely comes to visit me in my sleep sometimes which is both amazing and devastating bc I wake up crying and overwhelmed with grief... this song is so beautiful but brings me to tears bc it's almost my exact situation... the only difference is that we didn't break up and then I got with someone and got engaged just to hear that he passed away...my fiance passed away and I found him and we were in love and happy...our last interaction was before I went to bed and he grabbed me and embraced me tightly while telling me he loved me so much and we kissed goodnight..I've been through horrific breakups and it's beyond hard to get over someone you truly loved..but, . breaking up with someone and someone just dying out of nowhere right next to you is a whole different thing and it's unbearable and incomparable and it's the hardest thing I've ever been through and I've had an extremely hard life from the time of conception...I don't think I'll ever fully recover and I have ptsd from that night when I was already dealing with depression, anxiety, and insomnia so it's a lot of mental anguish... plus I feel so guilty for being asleep...he died in his sleep and didn't suffer, but if I would have been awake or if I woke up sooner, I could have saved him and I tried as hard as possible but he'd been dead for about 2 hours...turns out by phone records and my timeline and the autopsy and toxicology report that he basically got something off someone in our apartment building right after I went to sleep and died right after, like within a half hour of me going to sleep...he hadn't used at all in 3 years and just did a small amount not knowing it was laced with fentanyl....💔🙏🏻💯

The fact that she was forced to release this song and this was her moment to grieve just makes me cry. I love the song, but i dont like that it wasnt her decision to release it. She said in a interview that she didnt have the physical, and mental energy to do a third verse and thats why she harmonizes for the last bit of the song. Absolutely wrecks me.

I completely agree. I just wanted to add - I’ve always loved the last part of the song just being harmonies and strings. I feel it perfectly represents that feeling of having nothing left to say when the pain you’re in is so deep and complex. That probably wasn’t the intention but it’s what I’ve always thought about when hearing it. I do hope she has made some peace with this song being released. Thinking about scooter potentially pressuring her into it is upsetting.

she was not forced, stop running with that narrative just bc u dislike scooter braun. it was originally on the album aswell as remember, but ariana wanted to scrap both of them since they were too personal, to which scooter said he thinks it fit the album and that the songs were beautiful. then ariana decided to keep ghost in, but scrap remember. as far as we know, she was not forced into anything.

what's even sadder is the reason why the ending of the song is straight harmonies is because Ariana couldn't record the 3rd verse without breaking down into tears. she had written a verse, but every time she went to record it, she would start crying. so she compromised, and replaced the verse with those beautiful harmonies.

Ah! I did not expect this video to pop up in my recommended but I’m so glad it did. I’ve been an Ariana fan for years and when Mac passed I decided to listen to his album ‘swimming’ and fell in love with his entire discography. Ghostin is a hard one to listen to and I’ve always skipped it. But I think you talking about it with us today will be really insightful. 💔 Mac will be forever missed

I can’t help to cry when I hear this song every time. My soon to be ex husband (not my choice) is an addict & I relate to her in that sense. I’m never certain when he’s going to leave (in the OD sense) and he will never have the opportunity to hear from or see his daughters ever again.

I hadn’t listened to this song since before I lost my best friend from high school. He and I had always had an unspoken thing between us, but timing never worked out. And even though we had both moved on, he was still in my life. In November, he passed away from alcoholism. His funeral was on my birthday. We were too young to have to deal with that. It hit me hard when I lost him and the guy I was dating at the time was wonderful about it, but I still struggling and I felt so guilty for it. I’d listened to this when it first came out, but it hits different now.

One of Ariana's most beautiful songs. It shows the most real and raw feelings from, perhaps, the worst phase of her life and it's clear that he was the love of her life. Mac was one of Ari's pillars in a complicated moment that was also mentioned in the video, when he had that attack on the show. Even though it's painful, I like the fact that she tells how he visits her while she sleeps. Although she doesn't talk about the subject today, clearly the respect and love for Mac still remains, including in several other songs

I always viewed this from Pete’s POV. My ex used to always talk about her ex no matter what I did. I always saw her cry about him while I stood there supportive. Idk bro I just wanted to make them happy and fill that hole, but I don’t think I was enough or was ever enough until the moment I decided to leave, then all of sudden I was more than enough. I never wanted it to be that way, but it’s fucked that it was then , and only then, when she saw that I was gone that I finally, was enough.

Hearing this song for the first time as a teenager when it came out reminded me that our idols are just like us when it comes to exploring their mrntal health and that, although it is possible and IMPORTANT to move on after a death of a loved one, it still hurts every bit of our heart and i think that is the reason why i still feel a bit reluctant to listen to this song when i want to listen to ari calm songs (i would rather listen to moonlight ngl😂) or when i am listening to the album by myself🖤

I love this song so much because when I was really getting into her music I added a bunch of her songs on to a playlist and shuffled. It was around Christmas time and my family and I were going to my grandmas house the weekend before finals. I was so stressed over doing well and having to study while the rest of my family go to relax. We where almost there and it was dark out and the song came on when I was falling asleep and it just comforted my so much that I played it again latter that night to fall asleep. It is such a beautiful song and I love it so much.

Even tho ari write very personal songs I think she also always wants her audience to be able to relate to them as well which is why she used the word ghosting him instead of forgetting him. So that way her fans can also relate to the song as if it was a normal breakup scenario

one of my good friends lost her boyfriend from an overdose. Although it wasnt impossible given his circumstances, it was still sudden and heartbreaking. I have never heard someone cry so hard or seen such pain as i saw her in when he passed. my boyfriend was his best friend and it hurt him deeply and still does, but it was a different, unbearable pain for her. it makes me think that losing your person/ the love of ur life is a separate type of grief. there is a cause of death in widows called broken heart syndrome, where the pain the person feels literally stops their heart.

Not sure if you knew this at the time but the opening and continuing instrumental is a slowed version from Mac Millers song - 2009 which if you listen to that song will bring you to tears also because it’s from Macs perspective

if you want more ariana to react to i would recommend get well soon, theres a long moment of silence making the song 5 min 22 sec, 5/22 being the daye of the manchester attack and the song in general talks about her anxiety and ptsd and being there for each other. also fake smile, in my head, imagine, better off, off the table

I just heard about this and it makes me sick! I want to make a video on how someone with addiction issues is responsible for their own lives and choices. It was not her duty to “save” him bc no one can really save someone, he would have to do it for himself. And what, she just keeps dealing with the toxicity that comes with loving an addict so that he doesn’t OD?! Is that a life for her?! So messed up. It really gets me worked up!!!

Honestly I think you should listen to “pov” by Ariana. It’s the last song on her latest album. It’s kind of like the light at the end of the tunnel regarding the beautiful tragedies of her love life. Lol I think you could pull a lot from that song!

Addiction is the worst evil (in my opinion) the way it destroys the heart of the ones you love. I feel a sense of her pain, he will never walk through that door again by choice or speak and see to his kids anymore on his own accord. Gave up legal and physical custody 18 months ago. They already lost him & so did I

I feel like this song was made before Mac passed. It sounds like she left Mac for Pete but she did it so quickly that there was still interacting with Mac . That’s why she says she cries instead of ghosting him. Ghosting would be blocking or not communicating with the other person. It sounds like she still had a connection whether it’s calling or texting. I can imagine she cared enough to not want to lose that connection or still worried about him so she didn’t block or ghost him.

It was definitely written and recorded after he passed. “Ghostin” is just a clever take on what it means to “ghost” someone in this day and age. You can hear the grief and pain in her voice

Max was more than her ex, they we’re best friends and he helped her the most when the bombing at a Manchester concert happened. She had so much anxiety and Mac helped her through that. He always told her to just breathe hence the song. This song and others when she’s referencing Mac are always so heartbreaking. You’re right she has been through so much.
