This week, Eteri Tutberidze gave a doozy of an interview to L'Equipe. The IOC moved to allow Russian athletes back into international sports as neutrals. We discuss the impact it could have on figure skating. Then, changes in major league baseball make us think about changes that need to be made in figure skating. Yuzuru Hanyu's GIFT show is going to be on Disney + and Gracie Gold is going to coach at Johnny Weir's Skating Academy. Les Supremes defeated the Helsinki Rockettes at the 2023 World Synchronized Skating Championships. And the top skaters will return to Japan next week for the 2023 ISU World Team Trophy. We break it all down on the latest edition of 'This and That'.

This was such a good conversation. It felt like it could've gone much longer, and there needs to be way more cross-sports analysis of doping like you did here. It would be fun to have an episode covering those Olympics/Worlds matchups where it really could've gone either way. There are probably fewer of them than we think.

I just saw that article about the 2012 OG doping case in hurdling, 10 years later a reallocation of medals was finally recommended. It could be a loooong time for us as well.

I think we have seen the best balance of men since before 2008ish to now. I think it was 2020 Four Continents, the men's short program was an example of a perfectly balanced enjoyable competition. I think following Lambiel, Daisuke, Patrick, Dennis, who were balanced and pushing the field technically, we ended up having Yuzuru, Shoma, Javi, Jason, Nathan, Mikhail, Dimitri, Junhwan, Kevin, Yuma etc The men don't have a choice but to be good at everything.

It was my first time watching a synchro competition. I really really enjoyed the 2 Finnish teams in the long. I wasn't expecting to see anything I'd want to go back and rewatch a few times, so I'm glad I tuned in.

Ooooh! Jonathan, gurl. I gotch yo 80's gymn right here. It's all about Svetlana Boginskaya. Called "The Goddess of Gymnastics." She competed in 3 Olympics 88, 92, and 96, winning 3 gold, 1 silver, and 1 bronze. She had floor routines choreographed by the Bolshoi ballet. Sophisticated, nuanced routines with toe-point that could cut glass. She never did the most difficulty, but it was always soooo well performed, that she made it easy AF to give her huge scores. She was so statuesque. Tall (5'4'') for a gymnast, and had this body type that gave her a naturally cinched waist. You'd think it was manifested somehow by harsh Soviet training, but her daughter has the same Barbie shape. She looked so traditionally feminine when all the other girls were tiny compact and muscled. She was my favorite. She is _The Belarussian Swan_ She is "The Goddess of Gymnastics" She is Svetlana Boginskaya

Once again a spot on This and That, thank you so much. Watched the Synchro for the first time in years - really loved it! British - so only kinda got the baseball references. My reference point is tennis and almost just as much a fan there as here. they’ve been toying with shorter tie breaks etc., shorter doubles matches and in next gen matches even shorter sets. Again with tennis the Russia/Belarus question has come up. Wimbledon (we banned them last year) has been under intense pressure from WTA and ATP with threats for funding etc (not just the lack of points for a Grand Slam like last year) - if Wimbledon didn’t reinstate them. This is what they are *meant* to sign: "(Russian and Belarusian athletes) will now be given entries to Wimbledon providing they sign a "neutrality declaration", including an assurance that they will not express support for their countries' regimes and are not receiving funding from the Russian or Belarusian states, or from companies controlled by those states. Those players' support staffs will also be required to sign the declaration of neutrali-ty, which has been drafted in conjunction with the UK government and will be enforced by the ATP and WTA." I mean… the funding problem is next to impossible especially for figure skating - there will be so much obfuscation and honestly it will just be meaningless but there it is. I will say this for Eteri - she may not be able to avoid getting state funding (just the way it is) but she's studiously avoided actively supporting anything to do with Russia in Ukraine. Again TSL - thank you for all you do to shine an intelligent light (with humour) on our sport.

Very interesting discussion about the parallels in skating and baseball, and Jonathan's call for a ballet director to advise on skating- thank you!!! As a ballet dancer and physical therapist, I am equally concerned about the same issues in ballet. The quality, refinement of technique, refinement of artistic and dramatic expression, and connection with the audience are often lost in favor of impressive movements in dancers with high facility and extension. The Golden Age of Ballet paralleled the counterpart in figure skating, and perhaps the values in terms of training corresponded as well. What I would love to see is a much higher weight placed on GOE, and the narrative softly changed so that refinement of movement is called technique, clean technique is discussed as required for performing elements well, what is currently referred to as artistry is seen as incorporating refinement of technique and vise versa, and much higher weight placed on the basic elements of skating as necessary for the skill of athletic movements. A quad landed awkwardly, in my opinion, should be given a low value in terms of difficulty as well as GOE. This might facilitate a focus in training on quality and capturing the audience. And it should facilitate longevity, health and enjoyment of the skaters, as well as decrease the temptation to resort to use of chemicals and dietary restrictions. In my opinion, Jason Brown should be given far higher points for his technique and that is the foundation for his treasured artistry. Perhaps we won't bring back compulsory figures, but maybe we can get something even more well- rounded by redefining what we call technique.

One thing I really enjoyed while watching Synchro Worlds was the music choices...so different from the other disciplines! Synchro really lends itself to big, booming orchestral pieces that would overpower single or pair skaters.

Are you comparing only Ice Dance Free Dances now to the past? TorvillandDean won 84 Olympic Gold competing 5 times not twice like today. 3 Compulsory Dances with 3 sequences each, an Original Set Pattern that was all steps and no Lifts, and a Free Dance, which had Lift height restrictions and separation restrictions. Each couple demonstrated their technique, versatility, stamina, creativity, imagination and expression.

I find all the fascination with this competition is the exchanges of cultures. I am lucky to see 3 days of this competition and expect to see many other cultures different from my Japanese culture. I am particularly interested to see Koreans because they are new and I want to know more about their performances. It will be lovely to see we all share the same values and different expressions of the joy in life. It’s all celebration of the beauty of human kind and nothing to do with who is better.

Late to this, but chiming in to note that just when I thought TSL might be out of content, Dave and Jonathan deliver another fascinating episode. Love the baseball comparison. Also adore Dave's friend who went on a rant about Jason being only completely beautiful skater anymore (my soulmate. Jason is my favorite forever). Because of my extreme Jason fandom, I follow men's the most closely and I want to submit 3 specific performances where I felt that men with quads were able to reach that pinnacle of combining beautiful artisry with techncial delivery. So for your consideration: 1. Yuzuru Hanyu, Otonal, GP Skate Canada 2019. 2. Nathan Chen, Phillip Glass, 2021 Worlds 3. Junhwan Cha, James Bond, 2023 Worlds!! so proud of Jun. All 3 men have distinctly different styles, and I believe all 3 delivered artistry along with their quads in these specific performances. Are there women's or pairs performances that have reached this pinnacle?

Enjoyed this conversation! I love a competition where everyone skates their best and the results are so close it's forever debated (was watching footage from 94 pairs recently and I love how my opinion on who should've won changes almost every time I watch it - such a good competition). During worlds last week I was wondering what Eteri's motivation for showing up was. It's not like any of her skaters (the Georgians and Grassl) were going to dominate like her female skaters did in previous years. But what you said makes sense - she wanted that attention she'd been missing all year. And she really is the queen of gaslighting, isn't she? I've never really watched synchro before but last night I watched some of the tops teams and I gotta say I enjoyed it. Made me want to learn more about this discipline. One thing that bothered me about it, however, was it felt like the camera was zoomed in too much half the time and it's like I was missing some of the big picture effects. But what I really loved was the enthusiasm of the crowd! Seeing such support and excitement for these teams and skating in general warms my soul. Wonder if they'd ever bring synchro to the olympics..

I thought it was Sasha's short in 2002 that Scott was talking about the circular step sequence being a little shallow, and going on about the little deductions. I think it was that one because he also said something weird about the split jump could possibly be considered "an extra jump". Even I know that's not true.

I agree totally with Jonathan about the kiss and cry area of the World Team Competition. It does make the whole competition feel like an exhibition skate and not a real competition. It is hard to take it seriously when they show you the kiss & cry area with colorful banners and posters being displayed with a Rah Rah Rah cheer leading mentality. I think they need to get rid of all that banter and just show you the team members before their team mate skates cheering them on and being supportive. I think it would go over better if they showed you the team before their member skates as opposed to afterwards.

I love WTT because I love skating. But somehow I think the WTT is a creation for the Japanese. Note two individual skaters in men and women (Focus on individuals rather than pairs and dance which Japan had been weaker considerably (no longer pairs). Also is WTT always in Japan where there are HUGE fans of skating and support the skating world. It does affect the legitimacy as a competition.

Everyone on figure skating r/Reddit and the comments on the ISU feed were saying Chock/Bates did not deserve to win and Renee gave a good reason why they did. Everyone online is suddenly an expert on figure skating during worlds 32:41 reminds me of Ilia's jump drill of a program this season 34:36 Ilia is no Simone Biles, where her elements are so good the judges do not have a way to give her the maximum points. Ilia was just jumping.

Good argument can be made for giving Chock and Bates gold and how minor or non intrusive the fall is but there is al so good reason for both Canadian teams in particular to do better.. Of course we must judge based on performances but I guess justice might be in Montreal Canada gets gold and bronze. in dance. But again Piper and Paul and the Danadians will have to perform. THe Italians are wonders technically but the programs are perfunctory. Renee Roca, Megan Duhamel really gave great insight in their respective events.

How long would it really take for Russia to build back to three spots? Please do correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought if a country had one spot at Worlds, and that skater finished in first or second, the country would get three spots the next year. So if Russia came back next year (2024), and won or came in second, they could send three to 2025 and likely wouldn't lose those three spots. Probably not in Ice Dance or Men's, but definitely Pairs and likely Women's they could gain back three spots fairly quickly. I don't know I would trust the judges to fairly evaluate the Russian Women, especially if they come back with Quads (under-rotated or not).

Well said. Doesn’t matter if it’s skating, Chucky Cheese or Citizen Kane. You’re selling entertainment and the receipts are in. The recipe for success seems pretty easy: parity, rivalry, longevity, BTS access, and a scoring system that makes sense to a five year old. A one yard touchdown run? 6 points. A rare 99 yard punt return TD? 6 points. The sport is fixable but they need to clean house to get any changes through.

I know TSL loves Le Bezic but her commentary was just shady, mean, and continued the Cold War-like anti-Russian sentiment, even when some Russian skaters performed well and deserved praise. In the 90s her commentary was just how skaters didn't meet her standards, i.e. describing a program as "flat." Whatever that means. She is an extraordinary choreographer, but her and Scott's 2002 Olympics screaming commentary is still grating in my ears till this day.

Women was my favorite discipline but since IJS, when I go to an event I buy tickets for men. The step sequence in IJS has slowed the step sequence to a crawl in the women’s field.

As a lifelong baseball fan, both as a viewer and a former player, I really loved the comparison to figure skating. I actually hate watching baseball on TV because it can be very boring, for many of the reasons the podcast brought up. I skip over a lot of skaters these days bc I know exactly what's coming, and I'm not interested. I hope the ISU wakes up and starts balancing out the technical with artistry once again. BTW Dave, you did a pretty good job talking about baseball, considering you don't know much about it. You get all the flowers ⚘️

Following on from the cross sport discussion and as a skating ‘outsider’ - the ban on Russian skaters is inconsistent. The argument that their program is state sponsored is weak considering most Olympic sports at some level is state sponsored/subsidised and channeled through pertinent sporting bodies. Doping in athletics is systemic (all but Bolt in the fastest 100m have tested positive at some stage) and consistent but there is no energy to ban US/Uk etc en masse. There is a real reluctance across sport in general to broach let alone tackle the issue in a meaningful way.

Great commentary. Jonathan was right, your conversation reflected much of the conversation amongst skaters and fans. The World Figure Skating event by the Japanese was the classiest and enthusiastically supported event of the year. I wish the other events might learn something from it. The Russians, so boring and predictable. I hope that the single skaters, especially the women, look at some of the creativity the men showed and start putting their own personalities into their performance. It will at least make them memorable. As too musical choices. The last couple of seasons, except for a few, have been YUCK in all disciplines. The top Synchro team moves were Wow.

I actually think the only time in the IJS the paramount of beauty and athleticism was achieved was by Kostner and Asada. Yuna Kim by 2009 got there too but she couldn’t do a loop. I know it’s a read 😋

Mao's IJS footwork and choreo sequences were very memorable. IJS would work if everyone had skating skills and a free spin and lift to do whatever so we could have originality. Yuna was perfect :) minus the spiral

If the premise of letting Neutral Athletes back in is that they don't represent a country, how are they selected for participation. If the qualifications are based on Russian competitions or the Russian Federations are making the selection, then clearly they are not Neutral and DO represent a nation (Russia). I don't see how the IOC can have it both ways and still maintain any charade that Russia isn't actually competing. As with most things and the IOC, follow the money. Where is this money coming from? Who does this benefit? My opinion is that you either let them in or keep them out. I don't see how you can have any meaningful third way.

My two cents: The right thing to do, given this is a repeated offence from the Russian state, is ban those legally responsible for Kamila from engaging with the sport since she is under age of consent until the next Olympic cycle, aka coaches and parents (not that the latter makes any difference), if they protest that then make it temporary pending further independent investigation into Eteri's athletes/coaches and/or Dr Shvetsky's patients perhaps with promised immunity from losing medals to past athletes. Keep that investigation narrow to Kamila's team based on substantiated evidence. Then a separate discussion on politically banning Plushenko and war rally supporters who were evidenced politically vocal and supportive. I think people could be given an out about being decieved or coerced or pressured or even change political stance (it was one year ago!) could sign some declaration of neutrality - if Putin even allows people to do that. I also think people could also be allowed and supported to apply for refugee status if they share things that are politically sensitive or dangerous to them. That's what SHOULD happen, based on the case as it is, imho. Do I think any of that will happen? No...

Tell me, if the international world doesn't give discipline, who within Russia will responsibly do so, hm? If American athletes want to support Russia or Ukraine, they have the freedom to express so, and would probably just gain or lose sponsors accordingly to their individual views. I think it's clear from recent Russian laws that Russian state is the one thought policing their athletes', yes?

I am not a fan of the artist versus the athlete analogy because I don’t see how being artistic on the ice is not athletic. Jason may not be putting quads out there but everything he does is athletic. Using the blade, positioning the skating elements in the program so that they work with the music (timing), and having refined posture requires athleticism and a lot of it to do it well. If it had been easy to do, more skaters would be doing what Jason does. It is more like being the jumper versus being a program skater or Technical vs Components skater (Technical vs Presentation). We have seen some skaters who only had the jumps and nothing else. Is that really being a complete athlete when the sport is called figure skating? I think the term “figure” suggests there is more than jumps. It implies there are shapes and patterns and jumps alone really don’t create that without other things - transitions, choreography, steps, etc…..Maybe we should separate them into different events. We can have speed skating, figure or program skating, and element or technical skating - call them whatever you want. But, I don’t think artistry on the ice is not athleticism.

I agree with your comments about the quad obsession in ladies figure skating, however, that obsession seems to be mostly just coming from Russia. With the advent of the new age requirement of 17 for ladies, how long do you think that obsession will be realistically sustainable, since very few post pubescent girls can actually land one?

It’s definitely having some effect. Kamila is almost done and she’s just 16. You could see that she’s not the same as one year ago. Hopefully it’ll go in the right direction unless they plan to have 1 season champions always replaced next year by a less injured girl. Raising to 18 will definitely have much more impact and we would get no quads (maybe some 3A) and actual decent skating.

The blending of art and sport has defined figure skating too many. What happened on ice and the judging was not always so logical. With the coring system of 2002 I could see how The Russians should or could beat Sale and Pelletier (artistry was the tie breaker) iof the elements now are painful to watch as it is about levels and GOE in particular step sequences, some spins, the death spiral in pairs, pair and dance spins becomes more of an issue of getting the points than beauty and musicality.

You guys hit so many valid points, as usual. IOC just cannot do without that Russian $$. What about the US team getting their medals from Beijing 2022? Russia's doping saga? Bach has refused to address these, and so has ignored the rest of the world in his empty platitudes for peace. Quads are nice, but I love watching how the skaters put everything together in a program that makes the audience respond. Spiral sequences should be brought back, to show how a real spiral is done, rather than these 5-8 second spirals that count as "choreography" now. While the skating in men's, women's and pairs may not be as good as it was in past eras, this does not mean we need Russian skaters here. The people in charge of the ISU should separate figure skating and speed skating. Dick Button is absolutely right about this. It's not too late to get Grandpa Button's unfiltered recommendations, everyone!

Basically, am I to understand that Russia will be allowed back into competitions next season, but only one Russian per disipline for Worlds. Yes, there are a bunch of provisions. When, will there be a decision on Russia being in Paris and Italy for the Olympics? How many countries will boycott the Olympics, if Russia competes in them?

Hang on, if Russians are competing as "neutrals", they're neutrals, not Russians. So I don't see how they could earn quotas. If there is a neutral in the top 10 then the country with an 11th placing ought to get a top 10 quota for the next year.

The IOC is obviously corrupt. I won’t watch anything with Russian athletes competing. All of NATO should boycott the Olympics if Russian athletes are competing. Hundreds of thousands of people dead including civilians & also kidnapping 200,000 Ukrainian children. I just can’t see Russia ever back in the Olympics under the current Putin administration.
