She said "go to the damn party!" I definitely am a person who will turn down an invitation to hang out with someone new for no good reason. Thinking of it this way is helpful, it takes some of the pressure off of feeling like you have to make it work with or feel particularly connected to the one person who invited you in order to have a good time.

I've never heard of that study, but that makes a lot of sense. Last summer, I went to a random event on Meetup and one of the girls there invited me to go out with her and a couple other girls I've never met. I didn't end up being friends with any of them, but eventually I met another girl through her who lived close to me and now we're good friends. And now, I'm meeting some of HER friends and basically figuring out which ones I could also be compatible with. It's been a slow start, but it makes sense that the more people you know, the more you can branch out and see what their circles are like.

Not sure how this is "the key to making friends", as much as an observation about how one may be connected to another person... It kind of boils down to "make friends in various social circles, so that you can make more friends through those social circles", but that doesn't help with the initial part, and if one is able to do that, then there is no issue.

I watched this video when you put it out but just realized that I met one of my best friends through a degree of separation: after my mom died (right before new years in 2017), my cousin took me everywhere with her for a couple of months so that I wouldn't be alone. Her friend group was very gracious and they all quietly celebrated NYE with me (basically we just hung out, low pressure, no loud music) and that's how I became friends with her best friend. The two of them are no longer friends, but my relationship with that friend is one of my most treasured and precious relationships!

Wow, so fascinating. I've never heard of the experiment. That's really cool. So I'm just six people away from anyone. Funny way to start a conversation. Very helpful to identify the target. I tend to rely very much on intuition. I normally lack the barometer which tells who I like. I feel an even friendly connection to anyone. I hate deciding on people. Even though I am often alone, I feel a lot of connection to people. But I guess this is only unilateral. Thank you for your helpful information:)

Could you do a video on how to share information abt yourself and learn new things about the other person when creating friendships? In the earlier stages. I've noticed I'm really good at getting new friends to open up and asking them lots of questions. But have trouble in adding tid bits about myself which seem necessary for greater closeness. I feel like open ended questions are helpful for learning more about new ppl, but not sure how to self disclose (or even just say something abt myself) in the convo in a way that doesn't feel clunky. I feel like I'm getting to know my new friends well and they feel comfortable telling me more personal info abt themselves but realized I've barely told them anything about myself... so it might be hard for them to feel they actually know me.

This looks so much time consuming to me... I have, like 5 hours a week available for social activities, that's not even enough to nurture all my existing friendships and dance as much as I would like, so I'll stick to what I'm already doing.
@AnaPsychology
@AnaPsychology 13 күн бұрын
You do you! I will clarify, though, that I'm not suggesting you spend all your free time looking for new friends. This is a process that takes years for that very reason, because it's time-consuming. But if branching out socially is a big priority for people, then it must be treated as such.

Honest guess: It takes 3.25 transactions for each participant to find someone they know.
@chandlerketelsen8702
@chandlerketelsen8702 12 күн бұрын
Actual: It takes 5.5 steps. This is a misesitmation of *just* over a factor of 1.5. It really is a small world -- The implication is that I can find any person I can think of after a finite number of transactions of words with people. There's no one in particular that I'm looking for. Should I, it would require a feasible amount of energy from myself.

You should do a colab series with Dr. Orian Taraban. Any subjects would be interesting, dating, general psych, society issues, etc?
@Youttubeuser20932
@Youttubeuser20932 12 күн бұрын
Taraban is a run of the mill guy's opinion on dating channel. He loves to hear himself speak and make up analogies for things, that don't even make sense half of the time. He also said he doesn't cite studies because (something along the lines of) "you can find a study to support anything and a contradictory one as well", as if the point of being a Dr, and presenting yourself as one, is that you should be able to determine what research is good and what the current consensus is when looking at the best studies/analyses... He just uses his Dr title to get authoritative status, but doesn't act as a Dr., just a regular guy.

Is this what the Kevin Bacon Theory stems from? 😂 I always thought of it in terms of you can find a connection to anyone in the world within 6 people. For example, I have one degree of separation from John F. Kennedy because my grandmother had met him when he was a Senator on Cape Cod, so then anyone who knows me would be separated from him by 2 people. Either way it really can be a small world. Also, I live in fairly rural SE Connecticut so it's EXTREMELY hard to make friends here because our cities aren't big at all. ᴖ̈

Since at least as far back as 2012 it stopped being 6 degrees of separation from Kevin Bacon and more of a singularity. In 2011 He starred in X-Men First Class as Sebastian Shaw, which then branches wildly connecting him through those actors to nearly all of the rest of Hollywood and to British stars. Then in 2012, he starred in Jayne Mansfield's Car with John Hurt, which further linked him to British actors and curved back in on itself through Doctor Who's Karen Gillian who was Nebula in the MCU. Then the Disney acquisition of Fox folded the X-Men films into the MCU.
