In the past, on the classic show(mainly in the 1970's), UNIT was an organization that dealt with alien threats, and the Doctor was their unpaid scientific advisor. (he never had any use for money) So the government knew he existed, and had alerts to let them know he was around.

Cliffhangers have been a part of Doctor Who since the beginning. Every story in Classic Who had 4-6 chapters with a cliffhanger at the end of each. We had to wait until the next week to find out what happened.

@@JimAW63 And thats where I thought Nu Who lost something important. Going from serials to single episodes. Where I grew up the PBS station aired DW every weeknight at 10PM. Those cliffhangers gave me something to look forward to each night before bed. Now they only have one episode to set up, explain, and resolve a plot... usually with a manic info dump by the Doc.
@ronfehr7899
@ronfehr7899 3 ай бұрын
@JimAW63 I found the basic storyline somewhat repetitive after a while. There was always someone who wanted absolute power over everyone else, and I could rarely understand why. It seemed that they wanted it just for power's sake, and that they didn't really care about the others. As for the episodes, they didn't always feel connected to each other. One thing that bothered me was that the closing episode always seemed to be resolved in the last few minutes, with the bad guy suddenly defeated. Of course, I'm saying as a person who's only seen the episodes as an adult, and the classic Doctor Who was geared towards a younger generation, possibly one that took things at face value.

@@cruelangel8689In most cases you are right about one-off episodes (for lack of a better term), but there have been some two or even three-parters in NuWho, at least some that I remember early on (Eccleston and Tennant). But yes, Classical and NuWho vary quite a bit.

The Doctor absolutely has normal days, where he decides to go to Space Francisco to see the holographic dolphins and nothing goes wrong and he just has a nice day out with nobody dying. But that doesn't make for terribly interesting television so they don't bother showing us.
@peterlewis2178
@peterlewis2178 3 ай бұрын
To be fair, they could have done a better job in the early show of at least getting that idea across. They do eventually, with various throwaway lines or short scenes, but it definitely could have been done better and earlier on. I imagine one reason it wasn't done could be the time restrictions for broadcast TV, though.

I'm pretty sure you're wrong... SPOILER: In an episode where the TARDIS ends up able to communicate with the Doctor, I'm pretty sure it's either explicitly said or heavily implied that the TARDIS always chooses to take him where he's needed, whether that's where he was trying to steer the ship or not.
@peterlewis2178
@peterlewis2178 3 ай бұрын
@@bigdream_dreambig Spoiler: I don't think it's always, just sometimes, and that's why he runs into problems and ends up at the wrong times/places way more frequently than he should. But he definitely still has normal days, and they're referenced. One example is in the finale of this season, the doctor mentions that they had all just been in Kyoto, Japan, and then got sucked into the games. And in the season 2 finale, there's a clip of the doctor and Rose on some random alien planet. There's also a time Rose gives some alien weather-divining device or something to her mom that we've never seen or heard of before. There are more examples too, those are just the ones I know of off-hand. So he definitely still has normal days, he just has a disproportionate number of crazy ones, and those are the ones that the show highlights.

Glad you’re enjoying this story. NuWho usually has two 2 part stories each season. This is a call back to classic Who when each story would consist of numerous episodes, with each episode running for around 25 minutes with a cliffhanger at the end of it so as to entice the audience back to watch the next episode the following week! For classic Who’s first 6 seasons in black and white, stories could consist of 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 10 or 12 episodes, and there could be up to 40 episodes in one season! When Doctor Who went from black and white to colour in 1970, with the 3rd Doctor’s 1st story, the episode numbers were cut down to roughly 26 episodes in a whole season, and was usually comprised of either two 4 parters and three 6 parters or five 4 parters and one 6 parter. These stories with 4 or 6 episodes gave each story room to breathe and allow character development and motivation to flourish. The episode count was further reduced to 14 in the last 4 seasons of classic Who, before it was eventually cancelled in 1989 One criticism of NuWho is that each single self contained episode lasting 45-50 minutes can sometimes feel rushed, as writers are sometimes forced to tie up all the loose ends of the plot much quicker than if they had the luxury of a 2 parter to explore themes and motivation etc. There was of course some padding in classic Who, where a 6 parter could have lost an episode or two, but by and large having a longer format benefitted the story as a whole.

I'm not personally the biggest fan of this particular 2 parter, but that pig scene hits hard, not gonna lie. Also, "why does anybody ever run in Doctor Who?" is one of the funniest statements I've ever heard, especially because the first word the Doctor ever said in the revival was "run". Well, I had to look it up to see where this claim came from, and it seems there was some kind of hearing on UFOs last year. Definitely not confirming that aliens are real or anything like that, but much closer to that idea than I expected to see from reputable sources like NPR. So I guess I can see where some news outlets would spin that story and spread the misconception that aliens were confirmed to be real.

To answer your question as to why they always seem to land during a crisis, a theory is that the Tardis is semi sentient, and can read the timelines, delivering the Doctor where he is needed. A number of characters/actors come back in a Dr. Who spinoff titled Torchwood, I think you would enjoy that one as well, but if you decide to get into it I would wait until after you finish this season of Dr. Who to avoid spoilers.

it comes up more in the future, but once you personally experience or see the result of an event, especially one relating to your own history, it is extremely difficult for you to change it, you can sometimes change the details, but the result will usually be the same. If they realized straight away that it was the wrong time and left without seeing how the world was, no problem, but because Rose went and saw her mum, it's solidified it as an event in her life, even the Doctor reading the missing poster would be enough to make it a "cannon event". With the show being long-running and having this many writers, this rule can be a little inconsistent, but it is followed most of the time. Ironically, knowing the future by personal experience makes it harder to change, and the more it effects your own life, the harder it is to change. To quote a great character from a meh show: "One of the great lessons of time travel is that many things can't be changed. Time wants to happen."

Because of missing the pilot when it aired, this episode was my introduction to Sharine and Mickey. Therefore they left a very sour initial impression on me and it took quite a while before I could stand their screen time. The two-part structure heightened the menace of the slitheen so much that when Daleks appeared a few episodes later, I wasn't as intimidated because I lacked the context of the original 60s version of Doctor Who. Totally forgot Penelope Wilton was Harriet Jones. She's been climbing on my list of favorite actresses.

Once the Doctor gets involved in events he risks a paradox if he jumps back in time and alters something which leads to those events. So he would risk creating a paradox if he took Rose back to just after they first left since then Jackie would not have worried, reported Rose missing and put up all those posters. (That rule seems to fairly strict - and narratively it makes sense since otherwise the Doctor could just keep going back again and again until he fixed things which would make for a pretty boring show. )

Hopefully without giving too much away the Tardis is a living machine which does not always take the Doctor where he wants to go but where he needs to go.

sorry, but its not mickey who is a bad boyfriend, it's rose who is a horrible girlfriend the doctor is at his worst together with rose.. not taking anything seriously, not caring very much about people affected by what's happening.. constantly belittling mickey - nothing funny about talking to him like he is a dog the overarching story of rose and the doctor is still good, but they as individuals for sure do not bring out the best in each other.. good to know mickey get's what he deserves in the end...

Ok, Doctor Who is a show with many highs and many lows. The *FARTING FATSUIT ALIENS* are, sadly, not the worst thing you'll ever see, here. 😓 But they're *_almost_* the worst. And what's considered the worst by many has a good excuse to be. 😅

The era of this showrunner, Russel T Davies, (essentially series 1-4) occasionally delves pretty deep into rather immature humor, IMO. A lot of it hasn't really aged well....and quite a bit of it had already aged pretty poorly when it first aired.
