Awesome video Nelson. Note on the Dutch: "dag" is rarely used as a way to say "hello". Usually it is joined by "goede" as in "goededag". It literally translates into "day" or "goodday". It can often be used as a way to say "bye". That part was correct. A better one would be "hallo". Just like "hello" but with an "a" like in "start". The same as in German "hello". And the way to say "goodbye" has a small spelling mistake: "doei". Keep up the amazing work, always very interesting and brain-tickling video subjects that you come up with. With regards, from The Netherlands 🇳🇱

Hey Nelson! I love how your channel has been evolving specially on the editing side of things! I wanted to ask your opinion on something. I know you mention always linking the thing you want to learn to something you already know right? A big debate in the language learning community is about which type of srs card is more beneficial. Vocab cards (with maybe an example sentence in the back to give context) or sentence cards (with just 1 unknown word). Giving that you still read and get other forms of input to support your learning. What’s your take on that considering how you approach memorizing things?

Good video as usual! Just a little tip from a swede🇸🇪, In Swedish, the word ”hej" (hello) is pronounced more like "Hei" or "hEj". As you would pronounce the English word "weigh" but without W, "HEigh". Btw, you forgot to include Swedish at the list in the beginning of the video. I am not Norwegian but I think that "Hadet” is said with a space between Ha and Det ”Ha De" as two separate words. (T is silent).

In hindi, 'alvida' is usually used for when you're going away long-term, as in probably not coming back soon. In India there's thousands of languages spoken so hindi takes influence from each of those languages, when hindi is spoken in parts where it is not the first language. From where I'm from, we change "Namaste" to "Namaskara" and nobody says 'alvida' because it is thought to be a permanent goodbye. Instead women say "aati hun" and men say "aata hun". Which directly translates that "I'll come" because Indians are superstitious and also hugely believe in rebirth, it's considered inauspicious to say goodbye, so instead of saying I'm leaving, we say I'll be back after what I'm supposed to do. A reassurance, if you will. Yeah, that was long but I just found it weird when you said 'alvida' because that's one word I've only seen be used in movies. Great video.
@NelsonDellis
@NelsonDellis 3 жыл бұрын

@@NelsonDellis I've only ever heard it be used in sitcoms and movies... Like when the son leaves for the army, there's a lot of tears from the family and he delivers a dialogue about how he's going to save the people and if he has to die for it, he will and that they should feel proud of him and says 'alvida' as in no guarantee of return. Or when the daughter says she's in love with a man the family doesn't want her to marry so she writes a letter to her parents that she's running away with him and they shouldn't look for her, she writes 'alvida' 😅 just the overly emotional cringey goodbyes

It really bothers me that there's a lot of people on youtube claiming to be ridiculous polyglots uploading videos like "polyglot speaks 11 languages FLUENTLY on VR, omegle, etcetc". When you watch the videos, it becomes clear that they might speak a few pretty well, but a lot of those extra languages are very barebones with some basic conversational points. Irks me. I feel like when you take learning a language seriously, the more you learn the more you realize you don't know anything, and it's kind of disappointing seeing people make something which should be impressive seem like something so trivial.

Tips 1) Know your mother tongue very well, some people dont know that THERE ARE SIMILAR WORDS IN DIFFERENT LANGUAGES PROVIDING THEY BELONG TO THE SAME FAMILY TREE, most often i find that either a) most people dont know that the word exists in their dictionary (modern or ancient) and only has a slight difference in the sounding of the word or has a prefix /suffix added to it , or that the word has simply fallen out of fashion, or that is now only used in specific situations, to combat this people must read books from different ages, from modern to Chaucer. E.G THE WORD HOUND IN MODERN ENGLISH IS GENERALLY USED BY COMMON FOLK FOR A HUNTING DOG, HOWEVER IN NORWEGIAN ITS HUND AND IN AFRIKAANS ITS HOND, THEY ALL SOUND SIMILAR AND THEY ALL MEAN THE SAME THING,DOG, BECAUSE THEY BELONG TO THE SAME PROTO-GERMANIC ROOT LANGUAGE. Tip 2) If you only speak 1 language and you want to get started, then start with the language that is closest to your country borders, they most likely belong to the same language root, I happen to have Portuguese as a mother tongue and English as my academic language for all my life, I started my polyglot journey by trying to learn Spanish, french and Italian because they have the same Latin root as Portuguese. When I master these, I will move on to Afrikaans, then Dutch then German simple because a)I was born and raised in Mozambique and I studied in South Africa where you have Afrikaans as 1 of the official languages and they belong to the same Proto-Germanic root as English, E.g STREET in English STRAAT in Dutch and Afrikaans and I believe STRASE in German. LOOK FOR PATTERNS😉and IMPROVE YOUR LISTENING SKILLS, i do not speak Chinese, Japanese or Korean or Vietnamese but by simply paying attention to the sound patterns of these languages I can tell you which one is being spoken even as I dont know a word of it.

Hey, I just thought I would share something that's crossed my mind lately. Your channel isn't verified. Obviously you know this, as you definitely could get verified, which makes me think that you intentionally chose not to be verified. I didn't know why until I noticed you in comment sections. Almost every time I'd scroll through comments I'd find you in there. But even though you have 100k+ subscribers, people treat you like they would anyone else. Then I realized: You stay unverified so that you can comment on videos without people commenting excessively. Every time a verified person comments on videos, their comments blow up and get stupid comments. But because you aren't verified, people treat you as a normal person. I think this is kind of a problem with KZfaq in general. Content creators are just normal people, and I think people fail to realize that. So yeah sorry for that haha, I just thought I'd let you know that I'm totally fine with the fact that you aren't verified. Also nice video, banger as always.

It would be really awesome if you learned the language ithkuil III. You would be the first guy to do it. "What the hell is ithkuil III?" An guy created an language to test the saphir whorf theory that, the language you speak influence (or at the strong version of the theory dictate) how you think. The goals of his language are: 1-Test saphir whorf language theory.This has priority of the 2 other goals. 2-The language can't have ambiguity. this has priority of last goal. 3-Not having ambiguity means the phrases will be more complex and so longer. To avoid having longer words/phrases, one of his goals is to make the language more concise. One goal that its implicit at all languages is that it wont be extremely hard to learn. He didnt cared about this rule. Anyway, to make sure his language was really concise he made his language not be regular (so it has rules with exceptions....), and it made it really hard to learn (no one is fluent at the language not even its creator), because you would need a good memory to memorise the tables, but you are awesome with memory and so it would be easier to you. If you learned this language you would be the first person to be fluent at this language, it would be really cool.
@totleariss
@totleariss 3 жыл бұрын
add "yes" and "no" to those 30 languages and you'd practically be fluent! for mandarin the "goodbye" pronunciation would be a little closer if it was "zigh" (like high or sigh but with a z) "gee-and". So maybe imagine that you walked up all the steps to get to the great wall and you're really tired and want to take a nap. so you want to catch some zzzs "zzzz" and you're breathing a sigh of relief that you made it. and for gee-and maybe the view isn't as impressive as you thought it would be so you're like "gee, and?" For Danish "Goodbye" relating to the shovel maybe you're telling someone you need a shovel but because your mouth is full of danishes you say "farvel"
