Quick demo on how to do valve lash on these engines, and similar setups This can be applied to many engines with adjustable rockers. the BMC/Morris/Mini engines are identical in the way you do it.

very interesting concept!, thanks for the info. it explains why the intake is a sooted up too.

The way I was taught to do it is to determine which cylinders are paired with which, and to turn the engine over until one of the paired cylinders goes into valve overlap (exhaust closes and intake starts to open). At this point, the opposite paired cylinder will be at or near the top of compression. Check and adjust the valve lash on this cylinder, and repeat the process until all cylinders are checked/adjusted.

That thing in the intake manifold is called a thermo start. My yanmar has it to. You turn the key to accesssory for 15 seconds and it heats up the little coil and then allows some diesel to drip on it this creats alot of smoke and a small flame inside the manifold to help the engine start.

I need to learn how to do a valve lash adjustment on my uncles 1983 Mercedes 300D. I love those old diesels. It's got 413K miles on it right now.

yeh it was a ex Navy engine, Perkins S6M, sold to a avid Perkins operator in Wales :D

Probably got your answer by now but the preheater is called Thermostart. On the tractors when you turn the key backwards it heats the element and deisel drips on it to create smoldering fuel or small combustion, after 10 seconds you start the engine real quick to suck that into the cylinders to aid in starting.

About that fuel supply to the intake, I saw a video somewhere some time back where this person described how the heater works. Its a small heating element, which glows red when energized and via a solenoid diesel drops on this element and catches fire to preheat some of the air thats beeing sucked into the cyllinders. Not sure what its called though.,..

ide say the little valve thing is a cold start injector if its only got a positive feed and one hose in?

Hey man, I just picked up an unwanted genset. It's running a Honda G65 engine. I did a video of myself going over it, checking oil and stuff and starting it after a long time going unused. I did a bit of testing on the genset part and I think they wired it backwards. The load is connected across the slip rings, If I remember correctly the rotor and slip rings are used for excitation only. If it's OK with you I was going to post it as a video response to your Honda G65 video from 2010.

Do you think at some point you could do a vid about modified sine waves and pure and why people prefere not to use modded waves. Cheers xx

@coachman292 Its weird, I am not from England but my father is and since I was brought up around that I had only learned flame start units or plugs, but the first time I ever heard glow plugs I had no idea what they were talking about.

Do you need do something on the engine before do adjustment on these rocker arms? I know there are some marking on the flywheel (maybe the piston needs to by on top death center before adjust the rocker screws.

rallyscoot - "top death center" lol. Did you previously serve an apprenticeship with darth vader?? :=

Our Fiat Tractor is Brand New under the Rocker cover, and It get's a good workout, It is surprising how little Carbon deposits are actually sticking to the internals of the engine, it all comes out during oil change!

Looks like you gave them just a tad larger than spec, but as you said they will wear in. I dare bet ive been setting tappits wrong for years,i normally loosen the nut, then place a stand alone feeler gauge in the gap then tighten the screw with fingertips only, then lock it like you did. Is there anything bad about my method Ed ? Nice video ed :-)

yeh I think I said a ring was preferred, tho I shattered my only 12MM ring a couple weeks back :( / might have a old one somwhere tho.

Always remember when adjusting valves You want to hear them not smell them. And have enough tools to rotate or turn the crank shaft, opening the intake and closing the exhaust valves. Good Luck.

So, rotate the cam until the push rod is free (loose and not pushing up) and adjust the gap? So what's the reason why there is a gap?
@SamuelStanton5 жыл бұрын
If it was tight when cold, the valves wouldn't close once the push rods expanded as they heated up. adjust when cold (as is indicated on the sticker on the side of the valve cover). Some engines (lehman diesel) are to be adjusted at operating temp. The proper gap ensures that the valves open and close at exactly the right point in the piston stroke. As things wear over time the valves can seat further into the head, so it's important to adjust or the valve may eventually not close completely and lead to valve or head damage.

somebody who habitually drives recklessly through suburban areas, usually doing burnouts, slides, really excessive speed and just thrashing around without regards for other motorists or pedestrians. sadly the term has been misused to represent anyone who accelerates hard or accidentally does a wheel spin in the wet, or drives a little faster than the posted limit. I am against obvious reckless driving, but also strongly against police state road rules that target innocents drivers for profit.

This does not address the sequence of getting the valves set to TDC for each valve pair or even begin to address how to do it in situation or rotating the crank to achieve it, just ramblings about how feeler gauge should feel in the gap. This video is a waste of time.
