While I rather enjoyed Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire, I wanted to take some time to discuss some things that I felt left potential on the floor or were mishandled within the film. Every film deserves its fair share of criticism, and in this video, I cover my top 10 least favorite aspects of the newest entry in the MonsterVerse.

One thing i'm deeply dissapointed of is killing off scylla and tiamat so quickly, I was hoping they'd be kept alive for longer so they'd have some time to shine later, I'm scared this will happen to other titans.

I don't know if this is related to your comment but I think it's very important to tell you guys actually the apes that he throws from the cliff and even the apes that Suko throwed rocks on survived, the explanation as to how they were surviving is simple they are titans hell Kong survived falling in Godzilla vs Kong and even skull island anime he survived falling from the cliff while fighting the chameleon's and the exact same way he got stuck in a pile of rocks Aswell and got out and in GXK he survived yet again along with Godzilla when they shooted out from the portal and landed on the ground and then they start running like nothing after an intense land to the ground this shows how durable the great apes aka the Kong species and Kong himself really are.

I have to respectfully disagree with the Kong killing part. I can certainly understand your criticism of him, but I felt Kong did what he could with what could be expected of him. I fully expected the ape to fall to his death. I didn’t expect Kong to catch him. It’s the immediate retaliation to kill Kong that he gets fed up with and doesn’t give another chance. Kong also doesn’t kill Suko. He gives Suko many chances even after he uses him as a club. Even after Suko leads him to the gatorsnake(?) on purpose to get him killed, Kong still gives him more chances. But this is your opinion and I respect you bringing these criticisms up. Overall I agree with most of your criticisms. Godzilla just being this murderous being just doesn’t feel right for how they’ve built him up over 2 films(2014 and KOTM). The 3 to 4 bits of emotional we get from him are when he rests in the coliseum, when Mothra calms him down, acknowledging Kong at the very end, and returning to the coliseum. I’d like to see them develop him more. His next movie imo should have him do his duty as the KOTM and instead of putting a Titan in its place have him save one. Either from humans or from other titans. Perfect way to introduce a character like anguirus for example.

I agree with the next movie actually being about the balance of nature instead of Godzilla just murdering everything because “hAhA tHaT’s So CoOl!1!1!” Hopefully Adam Wingard doesn’t direct the next film. I’d rather have Gareth Edwards or Michael Dougherty back. If there’s a movie where you’re constantly seeing Godzilla in his glory, it shouldn’t be Adam Wingard directing it. I understand that he gave the titans a lot of action and was the first person to really show Godzilla fighting in the daylight, but there were zero stakes behind it, and none of it felt memorable or impactful like the previous fights. The entirety of GxK really just felt forced into the MonsterVerse, and it would’ve worked better as a solo Kong movie where they don’t try to make it out like this is going to be more important than KOTM when it clearly isn’t. I can almost guarantee you that Edwards and Dougherty saw the numerous complaints about the human characters and would 100% take it into account when they come back. Adam Wingard did a great job with GvK, and he had a chance to actually take criticism, but he drove everything further into the ground. Adam Wingard is a great director from what I’ve heard, but the MonsterVerse just isn’t his thing. It’s not fair to have a series where different directors come and tweak things for each film, and then all of a sudden Adam Wingard just gets free reign over everything because he tried to drown out the human characters with slop.

Biggest missed opportunity and something I had to take 1 point off of the movie for was how the movie kills off Tiamat, an alpha titan, in like 10 seconds. I think what could have been more interesting is if Tiamat fled the battle after Godzilla starts gaining the upper hand so that she could be the villain of the next movie, which Wingard has said he wants to make a Godzilla focused movie. Something I was always considering was that in KOTM and Dominion, it is revealed that Godzilla and Godzilla soley is the one thing keeping the other titans from destroying humanity, he would even go out of his way to save "destroyer" class titans who were in danger, but in the recent movies Godzilla has been rather apathetic towards humans, and I thought it would be interesting to give the other titans more character as well if the movies kind of called Godzilla out on this by having the other titans start to see Godzilla as a hypocrite who threatened to kill them if they tried to attack humans while he himself has no problem doing the same thing himself, which would cause a lot of titans to start to defect to Tiamat because she while she was evil-ish, she was outright in her behavior and would allow the titans to resume what they were doing during KOTM. You could then have a movie where Godzilla and Mothra have to go around to convince the remaining titans to stay loyal to Godzilla while also having to try and win over the titans who defected to Tiamat because Godzilla genuinely doesn't want to kill them. I also just liked the idea of Tiamat being this cunning alpha titan whose constantly trying to usurp godzilla, but because he's so much stronger than her he doesn't usually take her seriously (he was tired when fighting her in dominion and still won), but for once he would actually realize, "Oh shit, this could actually be bad". What I'm trying to say here, is that they need to give Godzilla a starscream-like character, someone who he's aware of whose constantly trying to usurp him, but also someone he finds too amusing to actually kill.

- Godzilla vs Shimo did not lived up to the hype at all. The premise of this movie seemed to be “Evil Kong and Evil Godzilla vs Kong and Godzilla” but watching the movie I just couldn’t see it. All Godzilla does is push Shimo around, shoots the atomic breath at her ONCE, and she shoots her ice breath at him ONCE. No biting, no clawing, no tail whips. Just tackling. It’s the most uninspired fight of the Monsterverse - The zero gravity battle is such a cool concept but in my opinion there’s too much jumping from rocks and not enough fighting. - Mothra feels out of nowhere, no mention of her actions in kotm, no mention of her sacrifice to save Godzilla, no mention of her reincarnation. It’s like she is showing up in this universe for the first time. We get some exposition about her connection with Godzilla but they don’t say anything about “She helped Godzilla in the battle of Boston and defeated Rodan” - No mention of Apex. What happened to Apex? Was it sued out of existence? Dissolved? GVK made it seem Apex was this SpaceX or Amazon wannabe, but then in this movie Apex might as well have never existed and MechaGodzill might as well have fallen from the sky for no reason. There’s very little aftermath of GVK. - The prophecy involving Jia feels so shoehorned and forced. And it’s also super specific and the characters immediately figure out who it is about. “An Iwi from Skull Island will return and awaken Mothra”. Geez, I wonder who that could be, just say “Also it has to be a deaf Iwi girl with a bond with Kong” at this point - Evolved Godzilla is just as bad as the Beast glove in my opinion. Everything Godzilla does in the Evolved Form, I didn’t see why he couldn’t do it in his default form. The movie doesn’t create a reason as to why his current form is obsolete. Instead it says he defeated Skar King in the past in his 2014 form, which makes his evolved form even more meaningless. The fights with Scylla and Tiamat should have been used to show Godzilla NEEDS a power up. Show him struggle. Show weaknesses that Scylla and Tiamat explore for their advantage. Then later show his evolved form overcoming these weaknesses. That’s how you make it feel earned and purposeful. - The fight with Tiamat was so underwhelming. Both are creatures of the sea, both in their natural element. Tiamat is stated to live in the most energetic place on earth. Then she just doesn’t stand a chance. So the evolved form feels cheap. Godzilla doesn’t struggle to get it. When your character, be a human or kaiju is getting a power up, you have to make them suffer for it, give their blood sweat and tears for it, not just give it in a silver platter. Imagine if in Infinity War Thor just grabbed Stormbreaker from somewhere, instead of taking the full force of a star and almost dying. - Skar didn’t get enough screentime. We needed to see what is his average day. What does it mean to be him. He felt rushed. That’s pretty much all the big complains I have within this movie.

GxK's most significant missed opportunity is not going all in on Skar King's origin. Instead of relying on dialogue and cave paintings exposition, it would've been better to see a visceral flashback. This would've established Skar King as a legitimate threat, confirmed what really happened in the Ancient War, and developed Skar King -- arguably the best villain in the Monsterverse. Moreover, it could've coincided with Godzilla's Evolved transformation, too. Godzilla could be dreaming about the last time he fought and barely defeated the Skar King, so he's arming up.

@@CobbleBompsterThis entire film feels lazy. There are so many cool ideas here that are just half baked and not explained properly. The film feels so rushed, it messed with a lot of continuity, further ruined Godzilla's character, tossed in Mothra just for the sake of bringing back a Toho kaiju, wasted the potential of Skar King as a villain to Kong and wasted the potential of Shimo as an antagonist, the human characters were not very good and the film was too short. Godzilla really had no reason to be in this. I honestly think the film might've improved if we cut him completely and given those scenes explain Skar King's character, the relationship Kong has with the rest of his kind and Suko, etc etc. I was disappointed by this movie and the Wingard movies of this universe really make me miss KOTM, G14 and especially Skull Island. KOTM especially managed to nail the perfect tone for this universe and Skull Island nailed the perfect way to construct the story and human plot of this universe. What we needed was a combination of those two, not whatever is going on now.

I honestly really would’ve liked it if they went the more “ancient and regal” pathway with Shimo. Like, she’s the OLDEST titan in the MV. So with it I imagine she would see herself as above the king of monsters hierarchy and respect Godzilla’s rule, but wouldn’t bow to him. I also would’ve wanted her to souley be the one to kill Skar King by slowly lion walking towards him as he’s cowering in fear. She blasts her frostibite blast point blank at his FACE. Only to slowly rise herself up to her hind legs (which we never saw) and suddenly slam herself on the ground, crushing Skar King to pieces and maybe making the ground quake a bit, enough even to warrant an “oh sh**” reaction from Kong AND Godzilla lol

Not only was Godzilla immediately attacking a kaiju who allied with him contrived, but that punch felt unearned as kongs still struggling with b tier kaijus like nameless eel while goji one shots an evolved tiamut( didnt like that either.) Plus Godzilla basically defeated skar king and shimo on his own while kong did nothing until the whip was destroyed by goji snd suko destroyed the crystal. Godzilla just felt like overkill in this movie.

Fully agree on the Hollow Earth and Rio fights being underwhelming. I’ll go over the Hollow Earth fight first. Godzilla should be trying to fight Skar King and Kong should be going after Shimo. There’ll be a contrast between the two fights, Kong’s trying to fight Shimo in the most harmless way possible while Godzilla is fully out for blood when fighting with Skar King. Godzilla manages to disarm Skar King of Kong’s axe, but SK wrecks Godzilla’s shit using both his longer limbs and his whip. Kong manages to get through to Shimo a few times before Skar King fully goes back to controlling her. Also just more fighting in this scene and less floating around. SK and Shimo eventually make it to the surface and this time they start actually doing damage. Skar King starts crushing people, makes Shimo freeze them, but he doesn’t eat them (because in his eyes, he’s too great to feed off of little insignificant mortals). SK could make a throne out of a few destroyed buildings, overall he feels more like a dictator finding new land to conquer. Godzilla and Kong are a little tired from losing each of their fights, but eventually they get back up and go to fight SK and Shimo once again. When both of them get to Rio, the whole place is a mess of destroyed buildings and ice. This time Mothra joins Godzilla and Kong. Kong goes to fight Skar King this time while Godzilla and Mothra take on Shimo. With Rio de Janeiro being a very mountainous region, you could easily have Kong and Skar King’s fight be in the mountains while Godzilla and Mothra could fight Shimo in the city and the shore. The fights could get closer to one another, leading to the fight we got in the movie, only it’s the climax of a bigger fight. This time, Kong shatters Skar King’s frozen body by slamming it onto the “Christ the Redeemer” statue because I think it looks cooler.

12:40 THANK YOU!! I've been saying that for ages! Like, why not just use one of the 17 titans from KoTM that didn't directly show up at the end of the movie to bow to Godzilla and make them the threat? I haven't read the graphic novels, but I'm sure Tiamat was supposed to be like one of the most badass titans ever and could've made a new villain story, instead of getting turned into sushi within seconds. Same with Methuselah, who is considered to be one of the biggest titans ever and we actually saw a small glimpse of him in KoTM, but he didn't bow to Godzilla at the end. I think that with what was established in KoTM, they should make a storyline about humanity's effect on the natural order (especially when they are able to create Mechagodzilla and funky Spaceships), causing titans like Methuselah to suddenly become more violent and Godzilla having to step in. This creates a new villain plotline as well as an interesting conflict for the human characters. Same can go for Hollow Earth, with humans now basically infiltrating some of the areas down there, without seperating themselves with weird web walls, like those tribes did. PS: My personal biggest beef with this movie is Godzilla. I'm not really a big King Kong fan, so seeing how Godzilla's only real purpose was for the title card and toys sales isn't gonna cut it for me. Additionally he gets a, in my opinion, very awful design and, as you've said, a major change in character. And while I do love evil Godzillas, I am not a fan of such one-dimensional portrayals and inconsistent character traits. Hence I think Heisei Godzilla has the best personality, cuz he acts as an anti-villain with complex emotions, especially after we got introduced to Godzilla Jr, leading to some of the most heart-breaking scenes ever in Godzilla vs Destoroyah. But you can't get that if you constantly narrow down Godzillas personality, especially after his characterization in KoTM.

You pretty much critically summed up everything about this movie perfectly though I do want to point out the other wasted potential this film had. Imagine if Skar King had a room full of armor and weapons made from titan bones and skin which he used to hunt other monsters. That would've been the perfect chance for Kong to find and use the weapons to develop different fighting techniques as he faces Skar King. Wingard also missed the primest of the prime opportunity to make Godzilla do his legendary meme moves(slide kick, flying atomic breath, victory jump emote). We also never saw Godzilla use his atomic breath or thagamizers on anyone which is very disappointing. Two more things that I would like to add: Godzilla - My main concern with Wingard possibly doing another MV film with Godzilla is that he'll continue to give him have that mindless rage personality which fans/non fans will see and only find it harder to like Godzilla more. I really hope that changes. Shimo - I do like her innocence though towards the end of the film and would be content with that being her main trait if she wasn't the "Mother of Monsters" which she just shouldn't have been.

Thats why Mothra appearing in full imago form seems off as well as not having nothing to do with the twin aspect even her calls sounding different.

I agree with everything you said Dman! Some issues I have: Cut out the entire Mothra subplot and you could make the movie 40m of concentrated Kaiju, saving budget on the actors and cgi. Win-win. The entire Mothra plot was useless and she only gets like, less than 3 minutes of screen time. Godzilla and Shimo are useless. Godzilla is only there to sell tickets, and Shimo is only there to distract Godzilla in the final battle. Cut them both out, make Shimo the main villain in Godzilla 3 and let them both shine. They both add nothing but spectacle to the film. I rewatched GvK after seeing this and I forgot so much of GvK. After seeing it, they were hyping up such good lore for the Kongs - hell, man, they had hollowed an entire mountain and carved thrones and pillars; crafted weapons from their more powerful enemies. And then in here, they literally just sit in a messy, ugly cave, with hardly any advanced weaponry but a whip and some knives. Another issue I have is all the stupid, pointless issues. Like, Shimo being locked behind lava...she is ICE. Lava shouldn't affect her - she tanked Godzilla's UPGRADED atomic breath in the final battle. Not to mention she could just free it and the chains. Just make her locked behind a wall smh. And "controlled by pain" is moronic, because whenever Skar isn't paying attention she could just hit him with her breath. She never takes any measures to get free, like not helping Skar when he's in danger. Or when he's distracted she could easily hit him with her breath like I said before. Also it would've been a lot more powerful if Shimo was the one to break the crystal, to free herself. All of this would be fixed by Skar just mind controlling Shimo, THAT simple! And there just being a convenient hole for Kong to escape accessible when in Skar's execution pit is stupid as hell. There's a lot more, but these are the ones I wished to mention.

While i loved the movie and had a great time, I agree on most of these points. Specifically Skar King. He was introduced in the film too late to feel like an ever present threat imo and I never got the sense that the team up was needed for him. Really, Shimo was the main powerhouse of that duo lol. I wish they established him as a threat earlier in the movie, and had both Godzilla and Kong fail against them individually, making the team up significant and warranted. Maybe they could have had a third enemy monster to rival Mothra to give her more to do but maybe that would have made things too chaotic. Though, if they do a Monsterverse Mothra standalone film, Battra would be awesome!

I put a long essay about my thoughts on these topics in the comments section of your livestream so I will spare you most of them here. Shimo was a major disappointment not only because she was overhyped and under-utilized in the actual film, but also because of how dumb her character actually is. She's portrayed like a giant ice version of Doug, not the intelligent, wise and ancient creature she is supposed to be. She's even treated like a dog or horse throughout the film, even after the mind control crystal is destroyed. So much more could have been done with her but it wasn't. Now onto Skar King... He shares alot of the same problems I have with Shimo, but instead of his character being too dumb, it is instead not used to its fullest potential. He's malicious and intelligent, but we only see this half way through the film and we don't know his motives before he's killed off. Any exploration that could have been done with his past or motives are completely wasted in this film. What caused him to become so psychotic? Was he traumatized? Why did he never think of using a Hollow Earth portal to get to the surface? Why does he mistreat his fellow species? *Is* he even the same species as Kong or a subspecies? Guess we'll never truly know. And hearing it as an afterthought in later films isn't going to feel the same as in the moment.

For me the biggest issues with me was the pacing and definitely skar king and shimo. The pacing of the movie was kinda all over the place. If the pacing was like infinity war where it’s non stop action but they actually take their time and savor moments then imo definitely would’ve been better. As for skar king and shimo I wasn’t really sold on the whole “biggest threat in the MV.” Shimo while cool felt underwhelming and Skar king I feel like we should’ve seen more of for him to at least feel more threatening. At least a flashback scene would’ve been nice too

Honestly you’re on point with the Skar King breakdown. I thought they handled stuff well in the film but the backstory you proposed is better. Also, I do wish he survived because he really did have potential to be Kong’s Ghidorah and him returning in a solo film would be great.

i'm all for adam wingard directing more movies but his style of wanting his movies to be perfectly under 2 hours is rather disappointing and a lot of potential can be missed much like in this movie, there just needed to be more tension in the rio fight because i dont think we ever felt like there was any in the last fight, i would've shown more of shimo resisting or being passive when the crystal's not in skar's hands. more of kong and godzilla doing team combos, more of mothra participating in the fight, more of godzilla and/or kong struggling, more of skar king showing off his whip (i would've teased skar throwing multiple buildings at kong and godzilla so that the next time skar throws another building, there's build up for kong to charge up his beast glove and punch through which would've made for a 'fuck yeah' moment). really there just needed to be a whole lot more of showcasing each titan's strengths and weaknesses so we can see them struggling so that there's tension and we could root for our team to win and really now that you mention it the idea of godzilla being able to 1v2 shimo & skar king seems to be plausible to me. still a fun movie regardless, never expected it to be a favorite movie, came into the theater expecting to have a blast and still did

This movie felt like final wars to me at times. The fights were so fast and ended before they got great and the final fight felt too short. There was also 0 need for an evolved godzilla. He was crushing everybody the whole movie and then when he powered up he still struggled with power glove kong so you don't even get a sense of how strong he even became.

I definitely agree with you on most things, but there are some that I disagreed with. Agree -Lack of Godzilla -Dubbing down Godzilla’s intelligence. -Mothra not being well integrated into the story. -THE MUSIC! Bear did a phenomenal job with the score in KOTM. Why hire someone else. -Lack of stakes and tension. Disagree -Kong gave the other ape a chance after saving him, but the ape ruined that chance.

*Kong:* *Skull* *Island* *(2017)* Finished a rewatch of Skull Island earlier this morning and it’s arguably the best movie in all of MonsterVerse. What was I thinking ranking it dead last? When I first saw it back in 2018 on Netflix, I guess I was too tired that I wasn’t in the mood for it. I completed it with a second viewing but didn’t think much of it or remembered it. I guess third time’s the charm because Skull Island has the best human cast in all of MV. This was before Brie Larson became the most hated actress in all of Hollywood and before Rachel Zegler gave her a run for her money only recently. We got hitters like Tom Hiddleston, Samuel L. Jackson, John Goodman, and John C. Reilly. I think John C. Reilly has the most likable human character in all of MV. How I see Skull Island is basically a Jurassic Park/World movie. Closer to Lost World because of the different groups stuck in this crazy island. Then toss in some Apocalypse Now/Platoon with the Vietnam War-like setting. But it’s really Jurassic Park meets PREDATOR (1987). You got a bunch of soldiers trying to fight these monsters in this jungle. You can argue Skull Island has better action scenes than any of the Jurassic movies and is better than every Jurassic movie except the 1993 one. And you can argue it has better action sequences than the original Jurassic Park because Kong would slaughter any dinosaur in that 1993 movie standing at 150 feet. We’ll favor Jurassic Park ‘93 strictly from our nostalgia. Seeing it today, it’s actually well paced. Perhaps only the beginning during the recruitment can feel a little slow. And I liked that Loki and Carol Danvers didn’t hook up in this movie. It’s too predictable and cliché. They left the romance out and it works better that way. The movie was less than 2 hours and it never felt it dragged by boring human characters like we see in most MV movies and Monarch. I forgot Bill Randa died in Skull Island. But it’s actually his fault that SLJ’s character and some of his men died. He was lied to. Nobody really knew what they were getting into. And I can’t fault Kong for attacking them considering he’s trying to protect the island. All the bombs were waking up the Skullcrawlers. Kong was simply protecting himself, his territory, and the people who worships him as a god. Skull Island still works without ever showing Kong much or if the big bad monster wasn’t Kong, the movie still works as a fun action monster movie on par or perhaps better than most of the Jurassic Park/World movies. I’m a big fan of The Big Lebowski and I finally saw Walter next to Vietnam War soldiers. Very colorful and more charismatic human characters. It plays off like two classic franchises as it’s Predator meets Jurassic Park. New MV Rankings 1. Godzilla vs. Kong 2. Kong: Skull Island 3. Godzilla 4. Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire 5. Godzilla: King of the Monsters 6. Monarch I will still have GvK on top simply because I had more fun with that one. I’m a little biased too because the first Godzilla movie I ever saw was King Kong vs. Godzilla and watching the 2021 movie made my dream come true seeing it modernized and remade after 34 years since seeing KKvG on TV back in 1987. And I’m a little biased with GvK because I prefer how Godzilla and Kong looked in it and I own toys of them from that movie. Perhaps in a few years, I might rank Skull Island higher than GvK. It’s no doubt the better movie but I’m ranking my favorites. GvK had some really stupid characters like Eiza Gonzalez’s character being the female version of the bloodsucking lawyer in Jurassic Park. “Dump the monkey!” I love Eiza, btw. Hot af. Loved her in Ambulance. But her character deserved to get eaten by Kong. I think it’s becoming clearer that I’m more Team Kong. While Godzilla is cooler with the cooler designs, he’s just a brute who gets into fights. Godzilla has as much personality as Rey Palpatine. With Kong, you can see the compassion in his eyes from watching Skull Island when he was younger and smaller. Brie Larson’s character touches him and he doesn’t get angry. Kong would make a better friend. This doesn’t mean I hate Godzilla or I like Kong far more. I still like them nearly the same. And I love my Hiya figure of G21 next to my Art Spirits K21. Let’s say I’m 55% on Kong’s side and 45% on Godzilla’s side. They can be a badass duo if they work together. But Godzilla is beloved for “shallow” reasons. To sell toys or because he looks cool. It’s not because he has depth in his personality. Even the other monsters he fights in his movies have no personality. I never understood the love for Mothra. While Godzilla is the bigger asshole between him and Kong, I’m still okay with it. But my heart will always root for the underdog in Kong, the OG big bad monster who inspired Godzilla. I’m with all the Black dudes or brothas who f**ks with Kong. He’s my GUY too. He’s an ugly mofo but he’s the one I’ll root for more. Hank Marlow: GOAT MV human character Best Human Characters in MV 1. Hank Marlow (John C. Reilly) 2. James Conrad (Tom Hiddleston) 3. Lee Shaw (Kurt Russell, not for Wyatt) 4. Preston Packard (Samuel L. Jackson) 5. Joe Brody (Bryan Cranston) 6. Keiko Randa (Mari Yamamoto) 7. Emiko (Qyoko Kudo) 8. Bernie Hayes (Brian Tyree Henry) 9. Jia Andrews (Kaylee Hottle) 10. Ishiro Serizawa (Ken Watanabe) Honorable mentions - Hiroshi Randa (Takehiro Hira) Trapper (Dan Stevens) A shoutout to Jason Mitchell in Skull Island. The actors for Eazy E and Dr. Dre from Straight Outta Compton (2015) were both in it and I thought the Eazy E actor did a terrific job for the small role he had. Monarch had some of the WORST characters in all of MonsterVerse. Cate, Kentaro and May were so annoying. Cate was perhaps the least annoying of the three but all three were whiners. I especially did not like what a dickwad Kentaro was towards Cate in the beginning. I have no issues with Millie Bobby Brown, Vera Farmiga, and Rebecca Hall but they all had very forgettable human characters. I don’t even remember what the Maximoff twins did in Godzilla (2014) except act like a married couple with a kid before portraying twins in Age of Ultron. Hank Marlow in Skull Island is a cross between Wrongway Feldman in Gilligan’s Island Season 1 and Randy Quaid in Independence Day. I love John C. Reilly in so many roles he’s in like in Boogie Nights, Walk Hard, Step Brothers, Stan & Ollie, and Winning Time as Jerry Buss. He’s usually portraying a delightful character. Chris from Film Stocked is correct. Skull Island is the best movie in MV. Sean Chandler also ranks it No. 1. Take off the Kong name and Skull Island still works as a good action movie whether it’s a MV movie or not. If based in chronological order based from the stories’ timeline, Skull Island should be watched first. I guess I’ll rewatch Godzilla (2014) next… 1973: Kong: Skull Island 2014: Godzilla 2015-2017: Monarch: Legacy of Monsters 2019: Godzilla: King of the Monsters 2024: Godzilla vs. Kong 2027: Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire

Imma be honest the ONLY major complaint that I had with the film was basically just a prediction being proven I had. Basically I thought for sure the reason Godzilla evolved is because he fights shimo and she badly wounds him especially in the especially stomach area which is why he looks he looks weirdly skinny to the point that it looks like a chunk of him missing 😅 So i guess its more my fault for expecting more but i agree with you when you said shimo should have done more so that first fight would have not only solved that issue but it would have also made shimo feel like a WAY bigger threat while also adding the bonus of seeing the Doughertygoji design fight shimo.

Ok! Thank you! My biggest is gripe with GxK is that feels like Adam Wingard still doesn’t give a flying fuck about established lore and only cares about what he thinks is cool. Like Mothra’s return should have been epic she had her backstory with the Twin sisters whose family had been guarding Mothra like the Cosmos from the Toho films and that was completely ignored. And just makes the Monsterverse films very wonky. Like it feels like Godzilla 2014, Kong Skull Island, King of the Monsters and Monarch seem like they are in a different universe from GvK and GxK. And I’m over the the insane amount neon lighting and LED lights that make the world look like it’s filmed in some KZfaqrs game room. Also enough of the “futuristic” flying ships. Whenever I see that stuff in movies it automatically takes me out of the movie. Like you can keep fanatical elements while still keeping verisimilitude. I thought king of the monsters did it the best of embracing the wackiness of Godzilla lore while still keeping it grounded.

Yeah, that is something that I feel is evident with Wingard, not just in GvK and GxK, but in the Death Note movie as well. I can believe that Wingard is passionate about the movies he is making and most likely passionate about Godzilla and Kong as well. The problem is that he focuses this passion of his on making sure that that idea on his head will be adapted but he doesn't stop to think if it should be adapted or if it fits with everything around it. Is it a coincidence that most deleted stuff from GvK were connections with plot threads from KOTM? Even in that video where he talks with Yamazaki about Godzilla's current state, Wingard talks about how Godzilla is versatile. Godzilla. Not Monsterverse Godzilla. Just plain conceptual Godzilla. (On a slight side tangent, an argument both directors made was about "proving Godzilla's versatility" and I'm just gonna say it, that argument was at best misguided and at worst hypocritical from them when looking at what they did in the franchise.) Although, when looking atcWingard's vision for the Monstrverse, it's not hard to see how a loy of fans see no wrong with it; the kaiju genre has been surprisingly incompetent in the concept of continuity and most fans don't seem to care. Another factor for the MV's current state might be a desire to overcorrect the perceived flaws of the previous movies. KOTM is controversial amibgst fans? Let's cut all plot ties with it! The early movies are too dark? Let there be light! So much light that everyone is now officially blind!

I wish she didn't spawn out of thin air. Give mothra a combination of her old abilities. Id love to see more than a silk spray. Give her, her hesei beams, pollen scales attack, and gmk stinger that can be used as a projectile. Wish the fights were longer with a little more time to breathe. Scylla and tiamat didn't need to be killed. They could have had Godzilla just eat extra nuclear plants. Or introduce 2 new original monsters as canon fodder for the upgrade. Not killing fan favorites A more KOTM way of doing it could have been to subdue Scylla to return to the ocean. Then he should have gone to tiamat for help. As her king she could have welcomed Godzilla into her lair for her to help give some energy and use the lair as a place to recharge. Like the King, warrior, or samurai being mended and healed to fight another day and defend the earth they all live on. They missed an opportunity for a gravity defying drop kick and Godzilla using his breathe to (even for a few seconds) fly around the anti gravity fight

Real mixed bag. Wingard gets Kong. He doesn't get Mothra or Goji. Mothra felt like an afterthought and Goji was portrayed as an angry, dumb menace. For all it's faults, KOTM remains, in my mind, the best depictions of Goji and Mothra. GxK just didn't give either titan enough to do. Skar King and Shimo were both disappointing. Neither were well developed, and as such, you didn't buy into the threat that was supposedly attributed to them. Kong carried this movie and was by far the best developed character in it.

Godzilla powered up for seemingly no reason considering he already beat Sar King in the past and Kong was able to best him as well. It's always nice to see Mothra but it seems like they just threw her in there for the sake of calming Godzilla, someone who usually accepts yields or let's other titans walk away or speak their piece. As much as I enjoyed the film. I can’t help but agree with almost everything you said in this video. Skar King could have been a great villain if he had more backstory to him. I do love his evil personality and he does act like a good foil to Kong much like Ghidorah is to Godzilla. However I felt he was a bit lackluster. I would have liked if he was a returning villain as well. Shimo I did like her design yet like Skar King was sadly underutilized as well. Would have liked if we got to know more about her other than just being a titan that Skar King enslaves. Although you can’t help but feel sympathy towards her. However would have loved more backstory especially since she is called the mother of all titans. Mothra it was nice to see her return however acted more like fan service. And was just there just for the finale especially stopping the fight between Godzilla and Kong. Also bring back, Rodan! Godzilla I felt was a mix bag in this film. I do like how badass he was however like the others he was underutilized. You think because he gets top billing in the title we should have gotten a little more focus on him but not really. I felt like Godzilla was just treated as the nuclear option for this film instead. Would have liked if he fought Shimo the first time they met and lost to her especially since he did know her in the past. It would have been interesting to see Godzilla try to communicate to her to see what was wrong with her only to realize something is wrong. And then when they have their rematch Godzilla is more prepared and aware. Kong I felt was the only good one out of the titans. Even though I’m more of a Godzilla fan. I do love how they made Kong in this film. Although there are some gripes that I had with him like you said about him killing another of his kind. Would have liked if he knocked him out instead. Kong was definitely the heart of this film without a doubt but would have liked if he interacted more with the other titans. Not to mention that Kong and Godzilla now have this Goku and Vegeta dynamic to them. GxK was a fun film yet sadly has a ton of flaws that just disappointed me.

Personally, my biggest issue with the film (which may really seem like a nitpick) was the sound design. For a movie that was heavily emphasizing its monster action, and revolved everything around it, the sound design felt weak overall, and didn't give everything the extra pizzazz it needed to be as exciting as it can be. While, yes, we're seeing these monsters brawl it out, but I wasn't *feeling* the sheer weight and power they're capable of.

Before I watched the video, I was thinking "Oh boy, here we go. What things does Dman have to say about the movie now and I'll have to disagree with him!"... I'm saying that as a joke by the way; not being super serious. Then I set down and listen to your thoughts, ended up agreeing with a lot of them... especially the points I didn't even think about after I saw the movie. Ended up agreeing with a lot of them: Mothra's inclusion (though I still loved seeing her again), the music, the main villains not feeling as much of a threat as previous films, Skar King deserving a more unique backstory and although I liked the pacing personal, I'll admit that the story moves a bit too quick. A few more aspects I agree with but I won't list them all because they're minor. Glad I was able to hear out your points. Though some things I would disagree with. I'm glad that you don't have a problem with Kong killing, glad you're not a snowflake and I even agree that there should have been at least one small moment where he hesitates to harm other apes like him but I feel like that moment where he saves the ape who almost fell off the cliff was actually good enough to establish that he didn't WANT to kill them. The fact the same ape that he just saved almost kills him and then he knocks his ass back down that cliff to die I felt was pretty realistic and made sense for his character to do. Personally I don't see Kong sulking over the fact that he just killed another ape for like 5 minutes and crying about it or something. He's an intelligent being for sure with more complexity to him then a lot of the other monsters but he is still a monster and an animal with primal instincts; if he gets attacked he's going to react to the only way he knows how... by causing great harm to weaken the opponent or just straight-up killing em. Highly disagree with having him NOT kill the Skar King. For me, SK was a great villain for just one movie. Don't get me wrong, I like reoccurring villains when done well and I think Skar King would perfectly fit that BUT he was such an evil bastard, I don't see a realistic way of having him stay alive at the end of this movie and then come back to terrorize again. It makes more story sense for the good monsters to kill him off right there; he was way too evil and ruthless to just let him live. That and I like that every Monsterverse film has a new enemy to face, gives something interesting to look forward to. I'm not completely against a reoccurring villain but I just don't think it would fit in this scenario. Also didn't hate the BEAST glove as much as everybody else does apparently. I get why people don't like it and it is simply just for a gimmick, that's why it exists but I thought it was a cool weapon to have for Kong that's something different. IK, not everything that is different is good but I think this is one of those rare occasions where it's at least decent. Hopefully he doesn't have it for the rest of the Monsterverse, in which case that will end up becoming a much more bigger problem for me but now... it's a fine inclusion. I'm glad that even though you have problems with the film, that you still enjoyed it, Dman. At least your problems are a lot more reasonable to understand than... some people. I'm glad that we can be able to critique things, even the subjects that we like but can still love them.

There are four problems I have with this movie. 1. Godzilla taking a back seat for most of it once again, though I will admit, he feels more involved then GVK. 2. Godzilla continuing to act more like an animal. 3. Shimo barely being involved. With all the hype around this titan, I was a little let down. We should of seen her a lot more and how powerful she really was. 4. The music. I won't bullshit, I really hate Tom Holkenborg's music. I didn't like the GVK score, and I don't like this one, especially with his knock off Godzilla theme. They need to bring back Bear McCreary because he made probably the best score for a monsterverse film with KOTM. Though I would also like to see Alexandre Desplat return because I really liked his Godzilla theme from 2014.

It would've been great if Scar kings whip also worked on Godzilla. Causing him pain but since he has a greater will power than Shimo he doesn't submit. That could've been the setup for having both Godzilla and Kong in the movie. Godzilla fights Shimo because his evolved form can withstand Shimos icy blast and Kong is vulnerable to it. Kong fights Scar king because that's Godzillas weakness and without Godzilla he can't take on both Titans at once. I really don't feel the need for Mothra to be in the movie and it was fairly disappointing. Tiamat was also done very poorly and instead of Godzillas fight with Scylla they could've at least doubled his fight with Tiamat. Kongs fight with the serpent also seemed forced just to give him an extra fight scene. Instead of that I would've liked to see him and scar king fight it out a little longer before scar king unleashed Shimo. There should've been at least one scene with Shimo completely overpowering Godzilla mirroring Godzilla stomping on Kongs chest and roaring in each other's face. Scar kings death seemed premature as well and he could've been used for future films. If they went with less fights and just played out some of the more important fights longer it would've saved a lot of the jumping across different places around the world to make it easier to follow and more enjoyable to watch

GxK isn't a perfect movie by a very long shot, but I have to say that I had the most fun while watching GxK in the theaters than I had with any of the other Monsterverse movies. Even more than I had during KotM. GxK also was the first movie I ever watched with both of my little brothers (It was my birthday present for my youngest brother), and they absolutely loved it and it's now their favorite movie and I am so happy because of that and that alone puts GxK at a very special place in my heart. I agree with most of your points here but just the experience alone I had while watching the movie for the first time makes me completely see past the many issues the movie has and just be thankful that I had a great experience in the theater.

After finally seeing the movie and being a Godzilla fan for nearly 40 years, I can honestly say that if they had rewritten this film so that Godzilla wasn’t in it I probably would have liked it more. It was fine, entertainingly silly and had some genuine funny moments but I think the story suffered from trying to fit Godzilla into it, and he mostly serves as a deus ex machina to show up and save the day. This could have been a great film for Kong to become a King and show he can deal with his own problems in his domain and it would have freed up time to explore the hollow earth more. The dynamics of the ape civilization was so much more interesting than a lot of the other story beats, I wanted more of that. The only thing I can say I genuinely disliked in the film was the sudden songs that would pop up at different moments and gave the film a feel like it was trying to hard to have a guardians of the galaxy style.

While I can’t stand Holkenborg’s Godzilla theme, I actually really like his Mothra theme, I consider it practically the same as her original or a direct counterpart of it. It fits its context very well, I actually couldn’t imagine her original theme in her scenes in this film. Her og theme in kotm fit the scenes as they were kinda dire, uneasy and melodramatic while her scenes in gxk were very heroic, action-filled, over the top positive and even climactic, and her new theme fits that quality pretty well. I actually really enjoy it independently as well as it’s just so overly joyous and exciting

My Main complaints about this movie. I did not like the over explanation of everything, and all the exposition dumping that didn't need to be there in the first place. There were too many things that were just so damn plot convenient that my suspension of disbelief was shattered, even though it is already a big fun and outlandish monster movie akin to the unbelievability and silliness of the late showa era. there were several parts where Dr. Andrews is explaining stuff that is already happening onscreen and spoon feeding information that would be easy to tell without it. Bernie makes an interruption when Mothra is onscreen fending off Skar king and his army from the portals, he literally saying "look! she's guarding the portals!" Like gee, I couldn't tell. Also Shimo didn't have much time to shine, and Godzilla felt like an afterthought and the team up aspect was extremely brief. The pacing was also rushed and felt like a 3 hour movie condensed into a short runtime. I am writing this before watching your complaints, I think you might have similar gripes.

Did Godzilla actually beat skar king back in the past? I kind of feel like them saying "Godzilla" is just short hand for "one of Godzilla's species". We also see the Gojira in the mural has wings, which our G-man doesn't (maybe space Godzilla teaser).

I am a writer somewhat but here is a plotline I think should have been done. I was thinking about how this movie should have started... Like showing Earth 100,000 years ago. Right away we see Godzilla, Shimo and Mothra battling Ghidorah and Shimo does freeze him, it's a short fight. Then later the trio separate as they have done their duty but it's clear that Shimo is Godzilla's friend. As Shimo goes to his lair, the crazy apes attack her and Skar King shows up, managing to take part of a crystal from her and use it to command her. Then we see Godzilla and Mothra come by his lair and even call out to her and since she doesn't respond, they follow a trail of ice to where the apes are and then Godzilla and Mothra are ambushed by the ape army and a reluctant Shimo forceyd to attack his allies. Then Godzilla and Mothra trap them in the pit because they can't fight an army. Flash forward to today and the movie begins.

I might be alone on this, but I couldn't enjoy it even in a "just here for the monster fights" way, because... The cinematography wasn't good. It felt way too reliant on close-ups and busy camera movements, and at time reminded me of 2000's action movies pre-John Wick. Where the film is shot in a way to hide shoddy choreography. Except it's all CGI, so why film it like that?

Ok am I the only person who thinks that the next monsterverse movie or show should be a solo Godzilla movie or show cause like Dman said his character has been ruined and I feel like he needs redeemed likeeeeeeeeeeee what if we also got a show like Godzilla B.C and it explained by showing us how the great titan war was started and also anyone else have the feeling that Shimo and Godzilla were old friends like maybe in this concept they later in the show explain how the titans started living on the surface and thennnnnnn have the appearance of Ghidorah have him start killing all of the titans and eventually Godzilla Shimo Mothra Rodan and the alphas of the other titan species come to help as well and maybe Shimo could be the reason Ghidorah was frozen in ice alsooooooooooooo maybe a backstory of why the mutos hate the Gojiras orrrrrrrrr maybe why the Titanus Mosuras have a symbiotic relationship with the Titanus Gojiras idk those are just some episode ideas and I feel like it wouldn’t be like monarch legacy of monsters if would be like someone from monarch reading a nature documentary about the titans like could you imagine some guy with a cool British accent saying “And over there is a flock of Warbat” or a “Oh look, a Mosura and a Gojira making their first step into symbiosis” just imagineeeeeeeeeee pls someone make this

I agree with you about them dumbing down Godzilla. I understand that some are saying that “ well he attacked Kong just because they had a pact that Kong would stay in Hollow earth”. What pack? I never saw in GvK them actually “ discussing “ this . Just at the end Kong signaling that he didn’t want to continue the fight when he put down his ax. And Godzilla ( also visibly tired) give him a look then leave. As for this movie it was supposedly aimed more for kids. So they have Kong using Sumo as a bat? A CHILD? So a kid bites you out of fear that does’t condone an ADULT terrorizing him. Sorry, not funny at all. Was the laughter in theaters because it was really funny or rather cringe laughter ( because people not sure how to respond). But later everything Okey Dokey. Even though Suko’s dad got deleted over the incident. 🙄
