1. On and On (favorite) 2. Lost Horizons (epic all the way through) 3. Cry for the Nations (classic) 4. Save Yourself (total guitar overkill) 5. Broken Promises (best bassline, also beautiful solo) 6. Red Sky (great riff/chorus, love the nwobhm vibe) 7. Never Trust a Stranger (best ballad-type song in MSG AND has a shred solo) 8. Dogs of War (more classic metal and kind of reminds of lovedrive) 9. Looking Out from Nowhere (awesome beginning solo and one of the best verse riffs) 10. Lonely Nights (very glam metal-ish, but great chorus and has THE most underrated Schenker solo, with an outro that's just as insane)

Mixing it up with the original (early) MSG stuff and the McAuley era. 01. Desert Song - (An absolute epic and the tasty leads.) 02. Destiny - (The most underrated MSG song in my book. Very catchy and driving with tasty, melodic leads.) 03. Samurai - (Heavy rocker with a catchy chorus. Solo section is where the money's at.) 04. Let Sleeping Dogs Lie - (Lovely guitar work with an outro that's the icing on the cake.) 05. But I Want More - (Sounds like it later inspired Accept. Huge outro. Very powerful.) 06. Armed And Ready - (One of Schenker's best solo-era riffs. Straight shooter, or banger.) 07. Cry Of The Nations - (I love how that silly "beach party" intro literally explodes into that catchy riff and song.) 08. I'm Gonna Make You Mine - (What this song/album lacks in riffing it makes up for in sheer catchiness.) 09. This Is My Heart - (Not a fan of the lyrics, but the guitar work is nothing but extra ordinary.) 10. Assault Attack - (The first song I ever heard by MSG and it was love at first listen. Total excellence.)

Butch and I agree on most things and I am always am surprised that once in a while he throws something out there at us all that I missed thirty years ago! People would tell me I knew of more great material than anyone, but I tell them that Butch is the master! Cozy, Bonnet, Schenker, all greats of my youth! Glad we share this and it’s nice to see that we all have a musical doppelgänger! So nice to see this video. And yes, Assault Attack is the greatest record of Bonnet and Schenker ever. And I always bemoan that it is the greatest effort that Cozy was NEVER ON!

great episode Pete and Butch!! i always like "anytime" and "when i'm gone".. sure, they were being more radio and video friendly with those records and also doing the power "ballad" standard then and with that eras production formula and vocal over-dubs but those tracks actually rekindled my love for MSG after kind of loosing touch.. still great tracks and Michael Schenker did what he's always masterfully done in playing to and for the song.. \m/ \m/

I was surprised that you guys didn't pick Red Sky. It sounds like it fell off Assault Attack. In the middle of the solo, where it gets dirgey, he kinda paraphrases the opening riff of Assault Attack and St. Holmes sounds a lot like Bonnet on it! The production on it is a little raw but, I like that. My favorite 80's metal album that no one talks about is Riot~Fire Down Under and that's really raw too.

I used to get guitar magazines when I was in high school back in the early 90s. I used to see Michael Schenker's name pop up as a major influence from so many guitarists. I never heard his playing until a few years ago when I heard the live version of "On and On" from One Night At Budokan on SiriusXM Deep Tracks. Holy Moly! The guy lived up to the hype. And what a killer track and the guitar solos - DAMN!

One night at Budokan ‘s version of “On and On” has a brilliant outdo solo. Funny thing is Gary says to the crowd, this is a new one off the new album coming out over here very shortly. The difference in what he plays live in that short time is astonishing

Had the pleasure of seeing him at a small club in Allentown PA in 2012. The place was almost empty and the crowd that was there was dead. But he put on one of the best live guitar performances I’ve ever seen. A real pro and a special talent. So underrated imo. On and On was my favorite that night. Let Sleeping Dogs Lie, Armed and Ready, and Into The Arena were also awesome. He didn’t play Attack of The Mad Axeman, or Assault Attack but I also love those.

hi ... good one ... Schenker was all about my late teens after getting UFO - Strangers in the Nightit ... it was funny when over here when Far Corporation got their version of Stairway to Heaven out over here ... guess you'd might have mentioned when Robin McAuley was with them ... members of Toto were also involved with that album... 1st 2 albums were and still are, just epic ... 1st album with Lost Horizons is so atmospheric... ... Assault Attack was good ...Built to Destroy to me suffered a bit with how it was produced though I still ended up buying both versions 🤔 I really liked Perfect Timing ... Save Yourself not so much ... and you're right ... after that kinda went off for me ... probably was down to his personal situation ... it's good that he's got better and is still killing it live ... Schenker will probably always be my fave guitarist even though its a shame that the Fest stuff isn't quite as good as old MSG was ... and sad that 3 ex MSG members died ... r.i.p. Cozy, Ted and Paul 🤘🏻🎶

WPLJ was great (especially with Carol Miller) from 1976-82, but WNEW-FM was where the real rock was at, especially from 1983-91, with The Professor himself, the late great Scott Muni ("Scottso") and "Metal Shop" on Friday nights, which is where I first heard Iron Maiden ("Flight Of Icarus").
