Top 20 BEST Indie Games of the Decade You Should Own

With this decade drawing to a close, it is time to make a list of the top 20 best indie games of the decade you should own. With indie games more popular than ever, and the increase in the number of classic indie games coming out on the Nintendo Switch, the past decade has well and truly spoiled us in terms of giving us some of the best indie games of all time.
In making this list of the top 20 best indie games of the decade you should own, Get Indie Gaming used a subjective measure of the best indie games we admire, love and those that shifted game development forward and came up with the following list. It is by its nature a compromise and yet it is the best measure we have.

That's true. After watching the video, I started thinking about all the games he missed and realized a list of 20 is just too small.. For me the top 3 (that are not on this list) are Sundered Eldritch edition, Slay the spire and RimWorld.

My personal favorite indie game has to be Hollow Knight, not unlike some others have said here. I honestly think it is a masterfully constructed game. The level of detail in the way everything is laid out over the world and how you can go in so many different ways is something I haven't seen in any other game, and I've been gaming for 35 years. There's also 20-30 hours of straight non-procedurally generated content. I'm genuinely confused that after the game did make an impact on you, you don't feel similarly, I can see why it might not be immediately likable, but ce la'vie. The story is so incredibly deep and well constructed with lore that rivals even the best AAA games.

I'll admit though that I have not played any of the games higher up than Hollow Knight on this list. I might try playing Journey with my 4 year old some time, and I do want to try both Dead Cells and Axiom Verge. My only concern with Dead Cells is that regular gameplay is supposedly harder than Hollow Knight. Having 3 kids under 5 makes it very hard to really get into challenging games. Even Hollow Knight is hard to get back to and play again once my middle child hit 2 and started requiring more time. The main indie games I have played recently are: The Messenger Minecraft Hollow Knight Shovel Knight Stardew Valley Terraria Starbound

@@chandez Yes, after playing through Dead Cells twice so far, I do think it is a bit overrated. It's fun, but it has a bit of an arcadey feel. It's also pretty short, other than being able to play through over and over again at harder difficulties, and I didn't find the variation in the levels to be that dramatic. Even weapon/item selection is fairly thin. What, about 8 different special items and a few dozen different weapons, all with a handful of different power levels. There's a fair amount of nuance, especially with the combat, but not a lot of total content or breadth. It would be nice to have some more variety in special items or loadout, as well as being able to have a small inventory. It would be nice too to have more passives and build customization options, because that's fairly thin. That said, I would definitely look forward to a Dead Cells 2, but I would hope it would be a little bit more like a rogue like adventure, less arcadey, with a significant amount more total content.

@@xviominous5049 Um... Yes. Minecraft. The game started by one guy who made his own studio... is "3rd party" I guess it is now owned by Microsoft, but Minecraft began as an indie. I don't know about Terraria so I can't comment on that.

I have to agree with you there, if nothing else I would swap it with Axiom Verge. I convinced most of my friends to get Hollow Knight and one of the interesting game play features is how Team Cherry have made so many ways to get to your goal. For example, my one friend decided to grind and get the most expensive item in the shop, the lantern, which let him access the Crystal Peaks as his second area of the game. He then followed that trail right to the Dreamer statue and got the mid game item. Most of my other friends after killing the boss went into Greenpath and found Hornet. Everyone's path slowly diverged from there. Some ended up in the City of Tears, others went into Deepnest. I'd highly recommend checking out Mark Brown's Game Maker's Toolkit video about Hollow Knight's unique level design. But hey, I can accept that Hollow Knight doesn't feel perfect for everyone, of the 10 or so friends I convinced to buy Hollow Knight, 2 of them have yet to actually play it, even if they bought it just over a year ago. I played Axiom Verge and it was interesting, but of the two titles, I have only played one of them for ~200 hours. As far as Hollow Knight's difficulty, I always find it hard but fair, an actual challenge, which can be rare these days. Just about every challenge that I encountered starts as very difficult, but looking back on any one challenge, they never were too unbearable. I would beat something and then think to myself, "It couldn't get any harder than that!", and usually it did, but never at an unfair rate. (Sorry for the TED talk about how great Hollow Knight is...) I can't wait for the sequel coming out soon™.

@@GetIndieGaming that's tough :) I think It would be 1 Hollow Knight 2 the Witness 3 is undecided :D But in top 20, I'd include some Klei games, darkest dungeon, the binding of Isaac... you know, the usual suspects :D

@@neverpure20 i played bastion and enjoyed it but pyre was just incredible story telling with great art characters and an engaging battle mechanic. its nothing like bastion n transistor but i never played that one. there all so different from eachother, i hope u give it a go:)

Dang! I've played through half of your list! It looks like we've got very similar tastes! These are some of my favorite indie games from the past decade: FEZ, Journey, Celeste, Hyper Light Drifter, Hollow Knight, GRIS, Shovel Knight, Cuphead, and BELOW!

Heck Yes, Fran Bow, Baba is you, and Enter the Gungeon. Hollow Knight, Darkwood, and Sally Face are up there for me. I have games that I like, and can appreciate, such as Shovel Knight, and the End is Nigh, but I haven't played them.

Great selection, and it must have been really tough to chose between all the quality games that this decade had to offer. I think you could have added some Honorable Mentions ? And I definitely think some gems are missing here, like Cuphead, Wandersong, Night in the Woods, The Messenger, Firewatch, Hyper Light Drifter, Hotline Miami or Superhot, but again, there are way too much games to make a list everyone could agree on !

I don t know about that first position, i would put hollow knight at first. Its way better than any game on the list, and clearly better than dead cells that i played and have no where near as many hours i have in hollow knight

I've only just begun to dip my toe into this genre but I'd have to say Night in the Woods affected me the most. Art, gameplay, music, story (/characters!!!): All of it really resonated with me. Loved Edith Finch as well!

Thanks for a great list and video. I'm not big on combat, so my top 10, in no particular order would be: Journey, Edith Finch, Dear Esther, Everybody's Gone to the Rapture, Far: Lone Sails, Oxenfree, Virginia, Alone with You, No Man's Sky, Life is Strange. I also really enjoyed the recently released Concrete Genie.

Oxenfree, Skullgirls, Bastion (all Supergiant Games really), Detention, Enter the Gungeon, Devil Daggers, Papers Please, Rogue Legacy, This War of Mine, Into the Woods, and Cuphead were titles I'd put on a best of the decade list and weren't mentioned here. I wasn't too fond of Her Story, Florence, The Witness, and Gorogoa. If I had to pick a title to sit on top it would either be Return of the Obra Dinn for its brilliant take on the detective genre or Hollow Knight for its flawless execution of the Metroidvania formula that bests every other title in the genre.

Subbed, fantastic list and completely ecstatic that someone finally sees dead cells as the truly amazing masterpiece it is. Been playing it since it launched and own it on 3 platforms. A good mention also would be the free dlc. I'd pay 10 dollars per if they asked but they are always free!

Edit: going through the video (great selection!) and the comment section gives you probably the best overview of the best indie games over the last ten years I've ever seen compiled in a KZfaq video. So many good games... All three Supergiant games are fantastic: Bastion, Transistor, Pyre. Also great and worth honourable mentions: FTL, Hotline Miami, papers please, this war of mine, hyper light drifter, darkest dungeon, ori and the blind forest. And then the one game that probably really deserves a spot in this list: Terraria!

people always forget that terraria is an indie game. and it works like hollow knight where they give a whole bunch of free updates(i think they either invented or popularized it)

There's quite a few from this list that I haven't played, so I can't say whether I agree or disagree with the entirety of your selection. That being said, I'd venture my favorite indie would be Hollow Knight. The gameplay was top notch, but what really got me with that one was the atmosphere. There was something in that rain-drenched, cute melancholy of HK that simply spoke to me in a way that few other games have ever done. The only one other game I would have included would be Stardew Valley. I spent so many hours with that game, planted so many fields and got in relationships with so many villagers that I have very 'real-feeling' memories from it. It's almost as if that town occupies a space in my mind that only real places do. Either way, beautiful video. Here's to a new decade filled with happiness and great indies for all.

Celeste is awesome. I love celeste with every cell of my body. It’s some of the most fun platforming i’ve played ever. The visuals are so pretty that I can’t even believe someone actually made them (especially in the last chapter that they added.) Now with all that said. Hollow Knight is better and should be number one.

One game that would probably make my top 20 that I don't think I've seen anybody else mention is Knytt Underground. It's kinda hard to explain why I liked it so much. It's almost a therapeutic experience to play, being set free in this huge serene world you explore at your own pace and have no idea where you're going to end up next. The only thing I didn't like about it were the character designs.

Did not expect Dead Cells to get the top spot, but it totally deserves the praise! I don’t agree with where you put Hollow Knight though, it’s my number 1 but I understand if you didn’t like it as much as I did. One game I wish was on this list is Salt and Sanctuary, I really got into that one recently. Still, great video!

I LOVE gris!!! I love that it was on the list! though not cracking my top 3, this is a great game. I 100% agree with journey's placement. It's one of my favorite all time games, but I have to ask: why didnt you include more tgc games? things like Sky: children of the light, Flower, and flow are all very good too. But I still respect your opinion fully, and think this was a good and helpful vid ;D

@@thenuggernaut9084 I mean it is obviously a pretty good game, but i dont think i am a very patient guy, i like to get straight into action (as you can see from the games in my list). I loved mantis lords' and hornet's boss fight, but in a game like cuphead i do not have to explore or wait to enter awesome boss fights. It is just not my type of game, it happened the same with titles such as dark solus or bloodborne (incredible boss fights hidden behind exploration, which i dont enjoy).

I wholeheartedly agree with the number 1, although I found that the final difficulty levels were a bit too high of a gap even for me, a Dark Souls (and other hard games) veteran; though probably one day I'll beat the Alchemist and finaly get that last god damn achievement. And then Motion Twin will release achievements for Bad Seed and release another 600 content patches and I'll have to go back to it again.

Great list! My personal top 10 list, in no particular order and despite not all being from the past decade, would be: 10. Risk Of Rain 1&2 9. Rogue Legacy 8. Slay The Spire 7. Nuclear Throne 6. FTL 5. Enter The Gungeon 4. Stardew Valley 3. Dead Cells 2. The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth (The original flash TBoI was great, but Rebirth make it so much better!) 1. Terraria (Journey's End HYPE!) Honorable mentions would have to be: -Siralim 1-3 -Hotline Miami 1&2 -Guild of Dungeoneering -Caveblazers -Slime Rancher -Tangle Deep -Darkest Dungeon -Crypt of the NecroDancer -Dungeon of the Endless -Vagante -Secret Of Grindea -Project Zomboid -Subnautica And many more to be honest, so I'll stop there. I just like indie games in general very much, I find that I enjoy them way, way, WAY more than Triple A titles, especially these days.

Personally I consider Hollow Knight the best indie game ever made and the best game I’ve ever seen. I love the ghostly aesthetic, the lack of cutscenes force feeding the plot. You have to look for lore to find it, really reinforcing the metroidvania style. The music is enchanting, and I would just listen to the soundtrack on its one. The art style is perfect, adorable and sometimes terrifying at the same time. Each upgrade is simple, a stronger nail or another jump, and yet each one makes you feel powerful. By the end of the game, you feel like a god, and yet there are still near impossible challenges for those who want it. The difficulty rising is paced incredibly, with each area only being slightly harder than the one intended to be before it. For example, Greenpath is only a little harder than Forgotten Crossroads, Fungal Wastes only a little harder than greenpath etc. The issue most metroidvanias face is that earlier areas feel stale once you’re too powerful, but the first area, Forgotten Crossroads, changes to become more difficult once you reached a certain threshold, and Greenpath has deeper layers you may not have found before that has enemies of a raised difficulty. The map is handled perfectly as well, with you having to find Cornifer to purchase the map, who only gives a faint outline of the world and then you fill it in as you explore, so that the exploration still feels like you found that, you found this, a map didn’t tell you. The connection of the world is amazing. For example, the Blue Lake is over the City of Tears, which explains why it rains so much in the city. And each new area gives a sneak peek of what it will be like right before the entry point. For example, the entrance to crystal peaks has small purple crystals on the outskirts, Greenpath has grass just outside, and the hive has the honeycombs on the walls at the entrance, etc. Overall, I think this adds up to make what I think is the closest to a perfect game I have ever seen. One flaw I can think of, which just isn’t for everyone, is that when you die you drop a shade, who carries all your money and a third of your soul container, which can lead to losing large amounts of money and can cause you to keep treading over the same area rather than exploring. And yes I know this video is old I just needed to express that.
