Again great videos comparing the various models from a photography perspective. I am going to get a Macbook Pro M2 model with 32GB and 1TB. The only decision I have not made yet is if I should go for 14" or 16". I am really in doubt. Since I have the Mac Studio + Studio Display for work at home I don't need the 16" on the Macbook when using it at home but I might want it if I am away from home. Do you have an opinion? Price aside but given you also have the Studio setup which screen size on a Macbook would you prefer for photography and video work ? I don't remember if you in any of your videos have compared the two models on screensize. I would assume that the only difference is the physical size of the displays ?

Great question and one that I'll be exploring in a video soon. Thank you for the idea. So here is where I am at. I stated out with the 16" MBP M1 MAX large screen has always been my thing and I want the largest possible. But weight and size reality kick in really quickly. And since I have the Mac Studio at home, I don't really need a super large screen. So I have been doing a few things, I have taken the M2 MacBook Air out to travel with me on occasion. It is light weight, small but lack the power for me. So this time around I settled with the 14" MBP M2 MAX stock config. It is lighter than the 16" MBP and still has a lot of power. Weight is becoming more of an issue and I don't want to carry all of that weight on my back or lugged it around. My cameras are heavy enough as it is already. I hope this helps.

HI, Can u thorough compare M1 Max Studio Base Model VS Top M2 Mac mini Pro 12/19 trying to keep same amount of RAM on both. and allocating Similar Percentage for Performance on both machine. This is specific to Video Editing on Adobe Premiere and Resolve and Photoshop and LRC and after effects too. as these models thorough comparison are not available anywhere. As for not heavy user but having the facility to go heavy on some projects. It would be great to see them both in action, as its the most confusing jump which needs to be taken.

Hi Art. Thanks for this. Max Tech stated recently that the better first upgrade for photo and video tasks is to get more cores before bumping up the ramp. Because you can’t take advantage of some of the RAM improvement with lower core machines. What do you think of this suggestion?
@ArtIsRight
@ArtIsRight 9 ай бұрын
Oh I think what they are referring to is Max amount of RAM. For the Pro SoC, between 12 vs 10 CPU the max ram amount is the same. And you are paying way more to upgrade the 2 cores vs get more RAM. Perhaps, it should be stated that choose the SoC variety first, rather cores for clarity. So my advise still stands, for photo upgrade RAM first and if you need more Ram that exceed what the variety offer then upgrade SoC and then RAM.
@davidealberti3784
@davidealberti3784 8 ай бұрын
it must also be said that I did the exact same tests of Max Tech with the 14" base M2 Pro (512GB SSD) in data transfer and video export (with Final Cut Pro), and my results are quite different and the M2 Pro it is about 18-20% faster for me in comparison to his results. Perhaps his tests were carried out with a chip that has not yet been perfectly optimized with the updates of the last few months.

Yes! A head to head comparison between M2 pro 10c/16c and M2 pro 12c/19c. It’s just surprising how the mac mini performs better than the laptops for supposedly the same configuration. Could it be some kind of power setting? Thermal throttling doesn’t seem super likely considering that benchmark scores are about same between mini and macbooks.
@ArtIsRight
@ArtIsRight Жыл бұрын
I would think it has to do more with thermal. And if you look at the results the Mini M2 Pro Performs better in tasks that uses GPU. I would say rather than throttling, the cooler on the Mac mini is more efficient at dissipating heat. Because on many of these test the mini heats up and the top is on the hotter side to touch, much hotter than the regular M1 and M2 that just hums along. On the 14MBP, the fan would kick on during many of these intensive tasks.

Want to upgrade from Mac mini m1/16 to Mac Studio max or Mac mini m2 pro/32 but I got the feeling m2 pro would be more than enought I am just on the fence with this heating up and noise. Do you think this affects the longevity of the machine ? And m2 pro in Mac mini do you think in long export like 45 min it throttles? If so I may be buying m2 max cuz heating up makes me nervous.

Thanks for the extensive comparison! As I am still looking for upgrading my MB Pro (early 2013) machine to something a bit faster (my main photo editing work is with Capture One Pro 20, as this is still working okay, but can use a bit less coffee breaks during my work, if you know what I mean). Seeing this, the M2Pro machines with memory upgrade are good enough, although on the other hand, currently for the same price (or a bit less) of a Mac Mini M2 Pro with upgraded memory, I can now get a M1 Max Studio (brand new). Have to check one of your other videos how the base M1 Max compares to the M2 Pro (base chip, with upgrade memory). “the search for my holy grail continues” 🙂 Thanks!! Greetings!

If you are looking at desktop, go with the M2 Max, unless you can get a stellar deal on the M1 Max. As far as laptop goes, Pro will do just fine. Pretty much anything will be exponentially faster than your 2013 MBP
@faizeljoemrati6329
@faizeljoemrati6329 10 ай бұрын
@@ArtIsRight Hi Art, thanks for your reply, appreciated. Regarding the deal on the M1 Max (desktop), The Studio M1 Max goes over the counter for €1.879 / approx $2.090 currently. The Studio M2 Max is tagged at €2.349 / approx $2.615. So that is for the M2 Max €470 extra on speed and hardware upgrades, food for thought.. For the laptop you say, the Pro will do fine.. Well that is something I do not understand completely if for the desktop the M2 Max is the "go to". Perhaps you can please explain? The situation is that I will replace my old MBP2013 for a desktop (hahaha everything will be faster than that old beast). As what I have noticed the last few years, is that most of my work (photography, wedding, concerts, portrait) is behind my desk, so no need to carry my laptop around. In the rare cases I need to go and shoot on location, perhaps thinking of getting a MB Air for just thethered shooting. As far as I understand one of the advantages of the Silicon chip, is you can run Capture One Pro on an external NVMe SSD, right? The idea is to run C1 Pro on a dedicated external NVMe SSD, in cases I have to go on location, just having the external drive with my default settings with me. (or is that just a weird idea?)
@ArtIsRight
@ArtIsRight 10 ай бұрын
Everything is relative, do you want a desktop or laptop. Desktop I recommend MAX because the price point for the pro with upgrade is easily encroaching on Mac Studio MAX price already. For laptop, you are paying a bit more to get to the MAX model, so the justification is not necessary the same. It also depends if you are on the budget or not and what that is because that will be the limiting factor. If you just want to get the best one possible for each then Ultra for the desktop and Max for the laptop. The reality is that is regardless of what you pick and even if you pick the M2 with an upgraded RAM, that will be leaps and bound faster than MBP2013. "As far as I understand one of the advantages of the Silicon chip, is you can run Capture One Pro on an external NVMe SSD, right? The idea is to run C1 Pro on a dedicated external NVMe SSD, in cases I have to go on location, just having the external drive with my default settings with me. (or is that just a weird idea?)" This is regardless of Apple Silicon or Intel, technically you can run any app off external drives but it is not recommended. What you can do is shoot so that your images are tethered to an external drive - that would be a possibility one that is easily done.

Super Thanks! Just did a bit of work on my old MBP, the convenience of having 2 screens is very pleasant (I only have 1 27” monitor). So taking back a MacBookPro into consideration. In that case would go for the base M2 Pro chip,but will add some extra RAM. SSD Will be base, as external drives are much cheaper and quite fast. Thanks again for your wise words 😎👍🏾
