MotoMan & ‪@TFLtruck‬ Editor, Andre Smirnov go back to the original tradition started by ‘Mean Gene on the Rack’ and put a 2024 Toyota Sequoia TRD Off Road up on the lift to answer a ton of questions: Why is the battery in the wrong place? Why is it a solid rear axle? And of course, is it a real off roader . . .

I'm sure Mike Sweers is a nice man in person but he was the guy behind the last (not the current in '24) 'revolutionary redesign' of the Tacoma. New Atkinson engine brought about less torque vs predecessors, still had drum rear brakes, still had horrible seating position, still had terrible transmission programming, but it did have (& Mike & Co pumped this feature up).... a mount for a GoPro. LoL

Given I really know very little about this -- my assessment of this vehicle is that it is FULLY capable ('cause, come on, it's a Toyota!), but it's set up to achieve the best fuel economy possible for the majority of the original owner who will purchase it. In other words -- take off the front air dam (and possibly, even front skid plate) and you have a FULLY capable, off-road vehicle -- i.e. Toyota has designed this vehicle for the second (and beyond)-generation owner as well! After all, Toyotas go forever! Great review -- I enjoyed the collaboration from two "go to sources" for automotive info.!

Love the collaboration videos with you and TFL. Andre is an encyclopedia of knowledge WRT trucks and SUV’s. Very educational and Lunar Rock is my favorite Toyota TRD Pro specialty color of all time. Please please Toyota bring that color back to the 2025 4Runner.

Another negative with solid rear axle is the ride quality. Bump on one side effects the entire drivetrain. Solid rear axles "bobble" around. Especialy when cornering and one tire hits a bump it unsettles the entire rear.
@Baebon6259
@Baebon6259 2 ай бұрын
that is why you slow down when cornering so you don't hit a bump. This ain't a race truck and streets aren't racetracks.

It has the traction of the best, just change the front bumper and give it a lift kit and it WILL go off road. The point is if you want to do serious off road, choose a smaller vehicle. But I guess haters will be haters no matter what 😑

As Andre said this in TRD pro is designed for being off pavement and at higher speeds, in the style of raptor or TRX (not to the magnitude, obviously). That long wheelbase and wide track inherently helps this, but for rock crawling like in Moab a large vehicle is just not the way to go at all: nothing to do with the actual drivetrain hardware on the Sequoia. Now take this and shorten the wheelbase by removing the third row and that alone changes the approach angles to where crawling is more feasible. That's why the 4Runner is such a strong contender in the space. It's also why folks were hoping the 4Runner would get smaller and move even closer to the bronco/Wrangler space when the land cruiser came out.

It's an adventure vehicle for big families (>6) that normally wouldn't fit a 4Runner/Bronco/Wrangler's 5 seat configuration. And even if the 4Runner has a third row, it is too small for long trips.

Not a diesel tahoe as #1!!! Less hp and the same torque as the 6.2 v8. Also the diesel is more money for fuel and maintenance so the mpg of a diesel over a gas 6.2 is a wash.

They shoudlve kept the independent rear suspension. The space that it saves could've been used for the battery. Virtually nobody offroads or tows enough to have any real benefits to a solid axel...theres a reason all the European crossovers have high towing capacities with independent rear suspension. Keep the solid rear axel for the Land cruiser. This is a mommy-mobile.

Probably because it shares the TNGA platform with the Land Cruiser 300 and Toyota want to keep manufacturing cost down. So the Land Cruiser 300, Tundra/LX600, Sequoia, Tundra, J250 Land Cruiser Prado/GX550, essentially share a lot of parts like the multi-link solid rear axle. Otherwise, they'd have to retool to make an IRS specific one just for the Sequoia. Get a 2nd gen Sequoia if you really want IRS.

All the plastic on this $80k mommymobile is why I spent $17,500 on a used hummer H2. 5 years and 50k miles later when my SIL totalled it I got $16k. Despite towing my horse trailer regularly and offroading it some, I only spent about $5k on maintenance and repairs ($2k of which was a set of offroad tires).

Get rid of the hybrid crap and put the V8 back in to free up the room in the back and make it a reliable vehicle. Then I'll invest in this vehicle. I don't want to gamble that much $ just to worry about it once the warranty is gone and also have compromised room in the back.

@@jermainec2462 To each his own. There's a reason V8 Tundras sell for such high prices used. Same thing in the Diesel market where 25 year old trucks are selling at crazy high prices and even old school tractors from the 70s and 80s are astronomical right now. There's people that "let that shit go" and learn the hard way and then there's people that know better. The younger generation always feels real smart until reality sets in. You think it's a coincidence that we have record numbers of recalls in the auto industry?

@@jermainec2462 ya I guess Nissan is kind of the last stand for a straight NA V8 and V6 in a truck. Those are the safest bets these days for a vehicle that has a proven power train. @@highpro1394 Sure A 2k bill every 12-15 years on a Toyota hybrid will ruin someone. Let's ignore all of the other standard major maintenance items that (are supposed to) happen at the 10, 12, and 15 year marks that will collectively dwarf a new battery. Or the fact that the average person keeps a new vehicle for less than 9 years. Buying a 12 year old Sequoia hybrid and replacing the battery would be a far smarter move than buying a 12 year old suburban and having to spend a ridiculous amount rebuilding their transmissions and dealing with their electrical gremlins that have popped up over the years in GM products. Not to mention everyday maintenance and basic repairs on those are higher than average
