Keeping Up Appearances was an early 1990s BBC sitcom which featured Hyacinth Bucket (pronounced 'Bouquet'...) and her numerous attempts at social climbing which ended in comedic failure. Always alongside was her long suffering husband Richard who was her 'driver' in their pristine Rover 213.
Having had several requests I decided to try and see if I could track this car down. Optimistically I thought it would be a simple search - turned out it was nothing of the sort!

They were two different Rovers used for Keeping Up Appearances. One was an SE with electric front windows and wood trim, which can be seen in some episodes, and the other was a stand S spec. It's worth rewarching to spot the differences.

Just to add to the madness of looking up this car. I actually rented the film company a Blue Rover as the one in the series had an accident, and they needed one quickly. I didn’t have a blue Rover in my inventory, so I searched, and found one at a local home in Wimbledon. The owner allowed us to rent the car from him, and I subsequently rented it to the production company dealing with the Keeping Up Appearances filming.

D541EFL is a DVLA auction issue, sold in January 2023 for £560. You can request any previously unissued mark for inclusion in a future DVLA auction, which is clearly what some fan has done, and transferred it to a formerly anonymous Rover.

2:21 Although D322 EFL may well have been the last number before change of prefix to E, there were a number of cars that will have been registered with a D plate after the prefix change. When British Forces personnel who had been serving overseas, e.g. West Germany, returned to UK, they would register the car with DVLA when importing the vehicle. DVLA would allocate an appropriate registration number to the year of manufacture of the vehicle. I have no idea if this is the case for the Hyacinth car but there is a possibility that D541 EFL was a genuine registration.

It is possible, if it hasnt been registered, to request a specific registration plate as a personalised reg from DVLA. It could be possible that it wasnt regustered back in 87, but the current owner managed to get D541EFL registered as a personalised registration and attach it to this car.

The numberplate D541 EFL was never issued in the eighties as you rightly say, However someone requested the DVLA to send it to auction and issue it. The number was sold at the DVLA auction in January of 2023 for the princely sum of £560. They probably requested it as they already owned the correct vehicle of the right age. Put them both together and checking the details it now sits on an April 1989 1400 Rover in blue which was taxed for a year in April 2023 and MOTed in July of this year. So it is probably not the original vehicle but certainly looks like it!
@markf4720
@markf4720 7 ай бұрын
So I guess the TV production team used a made up plate which they knew didn't exist, and someone has taken the opportunity to request and purchase that plate from DVLA so they can put it on their slightly later 1989 Rover which is similar to the car in the programme?! I would guess the £28k story on the fan website is made up!

@@oscarsgarage447 - Ok so then it looks like the car was purchased after the numberplate as the last log book issue for this car registration is 25th May 2023, perhaps they wanted to purchase the number first before taking the plunge!

The prefix change is inaccurate as there are quite a few sierras in the 500 range, including a very special car rallied by all 3 McRae racers D541 UVW. For reference 542 is a road car the last I checked, so EFL may have been a genuine plated vehicle IF the dvla initial first registration data still exists.
@oscarsgarage447
@oscarsgarage447 7 ай бұрын
Are you talking about UVW or EFL suffix with regard to the Sierra's as you have confused us? D prefix was August 1st 1986 to July 31st 1987 for new registrations, but of course age related plates, imports, private plates, SVA, IVA and MSVA registrations could have been down after that.
@Ebil-One
@Ebil-One 7 ай бұрын
@@oscarsgarage447 UVW suffix specifically for the sierra’s and these were all right hand drive cars, I did a little digging on the rally registrations and the highest UK D prefix I can find is D986 UOO in the TEXACO livery. Both cars competed in the 86/87 championships for their respective drivers. I mentioned EFL as reference to the rover as it may have been a genuine registration, but I doubt it as the BBC and ITV used fake registration plates well into the 90’s I.E. ITV’s Professionals (escort, capris etc). In regards to the MSVA logbooks if I remember correctly those were in addition to the vosfa/dvla logbook for road use.
@oscarsgarage447
@oscarsgarage447 7 ай бұрын
No idea about other area registrations, it was just referring to the EFL reg, the highest in that was 322 before the E prefix came out on 1st August 1987. Still confused as to how the other area registrations affect this?
@Ebil-One
@Ebil-One 7 ай бұрын
@@oscarsgarage447 it sounded like it was said that 322 was the highest number for that year, I apologise if I misunderstood you on that point(probably did) and hope you do find the car that caused the issue. Chances are that both plates are “studio specials” which is still a common practice, unless a tv appearing vehicle is slated to be destroyed that episode.

am I going nuts or does that rover look like a mid to late 80's honda civic, also I gotta say is it possible that their was two cars used, as some of the close up shots they had of it showed it had no windshield when they had it on the back of a truck, a trick for filming, that is sometimes known as the mic rig truck and then it did for the driving scenes, as maybe one was a soundcar that was driven on the back of the truck with a dummy plate so no one would give them trouble and the other was just a normal car that they used for when they had to drive and move the thing around, and they rigged up a dummy plate, so no one would give them trouble if they had to use either for a shot I mean even the 83 Quattro from ashes to ashes, was using a J viv plate that was registered to a Datsun, maybe even that 120 Y from that old british leeland challenge which apparenty was owned by james may and usually theirs tell tale signs of film production on a car, from odd holes, to downright marks from where the camera mounts sat and the cars would have marks and registration on them, like check who owned the vins, if it shows up to a BBC1 film company, you know its legit although I must say unlike the quattro and the good inspector morses jaguar, I cant say I'm particularlly enthused about Hyacyne Buckets old rover like this lol
