This is a full review of the Outdoor Vitals Ventus Hoodie that I purchased in the first release of their kickstarter. This hoodie was definitely "trail tested"!

I agree with a lot of what you said. Including when you said about getting toasty even down in the twenties while active, and there in lays the problem with the Ventus. It's just too warm to be a fleece and active layer. I used the Ventus for the last year and it's just too warm for an active layer even in the deep winter. I passed it onto my wife since she is cold blooded and it's place I'll be using the Kuiu Pelaton 97. My thoughts are that in deep winter trips I take a Gortex shell with which I can just throw over the pelaton if the wind is too harsh and with my fishnet base layer the pelaton wicking properties will shine in active wear scenarios. The Ventus can definitely replace a puffy in three season weather as you alluded to,and that's exactly what i did. I out grew it due to gaining muscle in my chest and shoulders which made it too tight which is another reason its now the wife's. I really like your videos. Any idea why I was subscribed and then unsubscribed? I wondered why I wasn't seeing your video. Was it some sort of glitch? Great video.

That’s a great comment and great insights! The Pelaton 97 has been my work horse piece for a long time in particular in the Sierra. I have no idea about the subscriber thing. KZfaq has a mind of its own sometimes. I always appreciate your insightful comments.

Dude super helpful review. I'm looking for something for strenuous cold weather wear in Rockies, like snowshoe and 14er ascents and winter backpacking. It seems like this worked very well for you in that kind of arena. I appreciate your vid! Thanks!!

👍 review, picked one up during the initial release. Thought at first the XL was too snug, but the athletic cut has grown on me. Worn it in all types of weather and the insulation, weight, durability, and easy fit make it an essential piece of clothing.

Thanks for posting up your experience with the Ventus! I really like it as well. The fit does take some getting used to We are so used to most clothing these days being very loose fitting.

I am looking for a summer mid-layer for my mountain trips. I want something to start out with on those cold / cool mornings - say in the low 40s. I currently have a Merino wool hoodie which is ok, but I think I need something a little warmer to be fully functional. The Ventus seems appropriate - but is it too warm for this application? I question if it could it get too hot while hiking requiring that I take it off but then air temps are still cool enough that I could be chilly not wearing it. I do think it would work fine as a mid-layer sitting around camp when in the 30s or lower.

It’s a good active cold weather/winter outer layer in my experience. It has enough heat release in the armpits to make it work.

Juan, what do you think of them about to come out with the Vario, which the Ventus, but with two front pockets and it being a full zip? With that said, the extra weight takes it from 7 oz to maybe… 10-12 oz. At this point your getting close to I think their lighter puffy, the NovaUL. I ask because I have been on the fence getting this AMAZING hoodie, but kept thinking another pocket… or that it is Really that warm maybe a full zip version would be better, but knowing that 7 oz weight is going to be raised to provide those extra features… I just… don’t know.

Jarred, OV has been knocking it out of the park with their clothing/layering line. I’m sure the new hoodie is going to be awesome. That being said, for me it doesn’t really fit into my clothing system. I look at warmth, weight and flexibility (across daily change in temperature ranges) when it comes to clothing. For me, the cost of the hoodie weight wouldn’t provide an advantage over my lighter puffy in the clothing system I’ve build so I’m probably going to pass on it… but that shouldn’t stop someone else if it fits into their “idea” system that they are trying to build.

Juan quick question what size Kuiu jacket did you go with to layer over the ventus? I’m working on my layering system and was thinking of getting the Kuiu down jacket as well. I already have their puffy pants with the side zips and love them.

My Kuiu is a XXL but I’ve lost a ton of weight since then. I’m probably in the range of an L now in that jacket if I want to have something underneath it.

Juan one more question is the ventus noisy while walking/hiking with it as an outer layer? Does it make a crinkling sound while hiking at all?

No real crinkly sound. It does make some noise but it is VERY minimal.
