As an anaesthetic doctor, I love hearing the boys’ perspectives on their experiences in hospital. Connor’s fear of hospital is not at all uncommon. It’s part of my job to recognise and allay the patient’s anxiety before undergoing a major surgery. Don’t worry, if you are a weeb, I’d love to crack some anime jokes before surgery for you.

Funnily enough Connor is actually right about air quality in the sense it's a big tourism marketing angle for at least the Chinese Market, literally being marketed how clean the air is as a reason to visit - Tasmania in Australia for example is big on it, so much so their tagline is "Come Down For Air", it's pretty nutty but is a thing

Oh, it is an actual, real thing alright. Right now, I live near the sea, but a couple years back I lived in the capital of my country. As someone who’s had a ton of surgeries and is only 31, you really do just get used to it. That’s why you see all these old people shrugging when they go to the hospital for procedures, because they’ve done it so many times that it’s just become routine and the fear factor has numbed. I usually joke with my nurses in the OR right before they knock me out because I know it’s all out of my hands and there’s no point worrying over what I can’t control.

100% with Connor on the different air smell. Anyone that's lived in a city for most of their life then visited somewhere like Hawaii on Vacation will immediately tell the difference in how the air smells. Im surprised Grant didn't understand as this shouldn't be a surprise to anyone thats been to a South East Asian country let alone someone that originates from one. It's literally just the smell of the 10 million motorcycles, barge level emission cars , cigarette smoke and burning rubbish that is iconic to every S.E Asian country with the exception of MOST parts of Singapore

both Connor and Garnt are saying the same thing, except the way Garnt describes it is associative + relative via identity (e.g. Thailand has a certain smell that's different to Japan) while Connor's is more qualitative innate to how polluted/unpleasant it is (New York's air is car exhaust compared to Wales)

Made me remember my near-death experience when I was 7-8 years old. So me and my family moved to my Dad's hometown where he had a part of his family's old house renovated. And on the 3rd floor, it was connected to my Aunt's (Dad's sister) house wherein we can access that floor despite it being unfinished. So one time I went there alone to check it out, and at that time I walked towards a cheap metal roof covering a square hole where stairs would be. However unbeknownst to me not knowing there wasn't anything under there, I stepped on that metal sheet and almost fell but luckily it was just the edge so I ended up sitting at the corner of the square hole. So shit, I either would have died or had broken bones.

The first two terminals of Jakarta airport really has to be torn down and rebuilt because it gets to the point where it's too small. Every holiday there'd be hundreds of people in the main hall and it'd be so packed you have difficulty moving around. I also really hate the way they built the third terminal, they construct the departure hall in the way that it's a hassle to actually go around. It's just really long and horizontal, with how the airlines sometimes go "uh sorry move to this gate instead", getting from one boarding gate to the other is a bit frustrating. It's also always hot like the aircon never circulates properly throughout the whole building. Singapore airport is the best.

I've never related to Garnt so much until he mentioned the smell of the airport. Literally every time I fly back to the Philippines, the smell of just landing in my home country feels so comforting.

Hospitals are so scary. My appendix ruptured this year and I had to stay in the hospital for a week. I would've been more scared when I found out I had to get surgery but I was in so much pain that mentally I wasn't all there. But yeah the smell of the hospital was really getting to me and I couldn't wait to go home

if anyone were to put their attention to the chapters, its really fascinating how a conversation can go from having the worst superpower to wanting to go to a hospital while talking about beds midway
