Tray for Japanese Chisels Build // Wedged mortise and tenon

Made this chisel tray to accommodate my set of five Matsumura white paper steel, Japanese chisels.
The frame is made from a very soft paulownia wood, used in a lot of traditional Japanese woodworking and with walnut wedges to lock the mortice and tenon joinery.
Almost all the build was done with hand tools only for the sake of fun, except some mechanical parts there to hold the chisels in place. The finish is one coat of danish oil.

Yeah! One year ago took the 12mm, in fall I took the 3mm, one month ago the 6, then decided to make this tray and two days ago arrived 9 and 18 to finish the clip😂

Many thanks! It will be practically a tool panel, something like a shelves panel on the wall, with may joinery and a nice look I hope :) From ash wood. Working now on the design based on the current tools and future ones, and how to arrange them. Can't wait to start on it. All the best!

Thanks! Great project. I tried to build one out of Aspen wood which was a mistake. The wood was too soft for the wedges to hold it together. They wanted to split out. Will do it again with poplar or something a little tighter in grain.

Thank you! Honored to hear that! For planes I have some links in the description with some affordable ones, maybe one of the most you can find. Chisels, less then 20-25USD a piece I didn't saw anywhere. There are some sets on amazon, haven't tried them, but they have decent reviews. Or, you can check also used ones on ebay, there are plenty.

Beautiful work and beautiful chisels set! I was wondering whether you sharpen them with a honing guide or just freehand... I wish you good luck with your new part-time woodworking adventure!

Thank you Marco! I have guides for western chisels and planes. For Japanese ones, I sharpen freehand the plane, and some chisels too cause they don't fit in the guide due to their form. The japanese plane's blade, at one point I will round too much the bevel due to freehand, so once in a while I place it on the Veritas guide to establish a new flat bevel. Normally is very hard to fix it on a normal guide due to its weird tapered form. Special kanna's blade guides are quite expensive, over 150 euro one :)

Yes, a kind of experiment. I just got an external directional mic so very less noise was recorded, so I said why not leave just the tools see how it goes. The next one will have music sure cause didn't caught good audio, but for future I try to alternate. Just received the 65 and I must leave it for rest some weeks or months. In clip is still the 50mm one

Thank you Francesco! It is interesting to work with the japanese plane cause is very soft, like somewhere between pine and balsa I may say. With the chisel same piece of cake but just like pine, being too soft fibers brake easily on the edges. Grain texture is not so spectacular, it's discrete, but overall nice to work with as a substitute for cheap woods. Btw I bought that board of paulonia from Brico Center some years ago, it is a 800x200x18mm, they had many sizes, but just after I bought it they stopped selling it. Too bad cause I wanted to make a small stock :)

Lovely clean job. You did stuff there that would make my bottom flap with nerves. Can I ask have you 're painted your chisels black? Not see ones which look like that and are so clean/new looking..... even my new set don't look like that? Love it though

Thanks! That's just the way they are, probably they were cooled in oil, idk so much blacksmiting, and that's why they are black. Most of the japanese tools blades/steels are like so on the non-sharpenable faces

Brilliant work as always Adrian. Any tips you can offer on resawing? Those strips you cut for the back were so thin. I tried resawing by hand recently. Not so good for me!

Thank you Nigel! I am always marking with the marking gauge the trail of the sawing. This way the saw will have a pretty good guide when working.

I add them mostly cause the tray will be sitting on a shelf, a bit leaned against the wall, so I may be droping them in a hurry if not, or at least to reduce the risk :)

This may be like a really late comment, but how fast does paulownia dulls blades? I've heard mixed opinions.

Beautiful tray, very nice work. Just a little constructive criticism; I would have liked to have seen the chisel support and magnet strip fitted without the use of screws. I don't know the correct wood working terms, but perhaps there could have been some kind of 'blind' mortise, halfway into the side/uprights? Is there a technical reason why this couldn't be done? Forgive me for criticising, just the humble wondering of a complete pleb :)

No worry, I don't mind at all! :) It was just cause too thin material there, or I might change the content in future, other compartments inside and didn't want to make any irreversible stuff there. Also, I am not so fanatic doing projects with handtools only, or traditional only. I just aim to make them look good, functional, no matter the tools and techniques used. Btw, next video will have a CNC doing a job there :))

+ Adrian Preda Hi Adrian, i would like some advice from you again if possible ( I am on my other youtube channel ) I want to order my first tools today so i can get started, quite hard to figure out what to get first tbh! Need few tools to get the ball rollin' :) My plan; - Fine Dozuki saw with 0.3 mm blade and 25 tpi (Gyokucho Dozuki Noko 240mm) - Japanese Matsumura chisel size 3mm and maby another bigger size - Stanley normal angle plane that i got from my dad already for shooting board - few measuring tools and other bits Dozuki to make the cut and some good chisels to make the precise dimensions after. I want to start with fine woodwork first, so more kumiko type work in terms of wood size and want to practice making small joints. I was thinking of buying a 3 mm Japanese chisel and start from there, would you rather get the MHG type chisel set first and later on some japanese? I was thinking might as well invest straight away in few Japanese chisels for precise work, Thanks in advance! Have good day!

That is probably some sawdust :)) The only glue in this project is when I attached that walnut veneer to the magnetic pad. No glue I meant actually for the joinery/assembly of the tray
