Triumph Tiger 800 XRX Review - This or the Tiger 1200?

I took this Triumph Tiger 800 XRX out just after I took out its big sibling, the 1200 XRT to see if the smaller bike gave away a lot for the price differential.
It might help if you watch the 1200 video first.

Big seller for Triumph. 800 for me. perfect for me.

Yeah, perfect for many people. It's a lot cheaper, arguably more 'fun' and still comfy enough for rider and pillion with decent power. Ade

This bikes does enough and is comfy for 2 up. you wont need the 1200 power unless you a lot of pillion rides a long way i reckon.

Yeah, one only needs power for long trips with pillions but, hey, it's not to always have it on tap for those long empty roads :) Ade

I've looked for your test ride on the 1250 GS and can't find anything! What "faults" did it have then? I'd agree with what you say about the solo/pillion use for 800/1200 Tigers and if you're only ever riding solo the 800 is probably the better option of the 2 for a normal sized rider while the 1200 is best as a 2 up long distance tourer providing you're tall and strong enough to pilot 1 2 up fully loaded

Ah! Ha. I haven't uploaded it yet! Almost bought one so was saving the video. I will get it out in the next 2 weeks. Good point about being strong enough. It does take a bit of strength and experience to support the bike when it stops. I actually wouldn';t fancy it with a pillion on the back in that respect as I have no experience. There are absolutely NO faults at all on the Tiger 1200 or the GS1250 - none at all. Comes down to personal preference. I also really like the KTM Super Adventure I took out but the dealer is just too far away really. I do like local dealers if I can. Ade

@@RevMonkey I wanted something that would do everything well including 2 up trips away but the Triumph was just too big and top heavy for me at 5'7" short so I went for a GS in the end though I get what you mean about having a local dealer as the nearest to me is a BM one! Cheers Ade.

So what are you thinking Ade. Getting one of these or the 1200?
@RevMonkey
@RevMonkey 4 жыл бұрын
I wouldnt get the 800 Lenny - great as it is. I would relish the extras the 1200 offers all day long. Overall though, I propably wouldn't the 1200 either. I feel more drawn to the GS and the Africa Twin. Ade

I had a Tiger 800 XRT for a couple of years and have done test rides on both the 900 Tracer and Honda Africa Twin. The tiger was much more engaging bike than the other two, but, it tramlined on joints and banding in the road, also, no one seemed to be able to stop buffeting from the screen, the Honda felt more planted and stable but seemed to be lacking features found on the Tiger. The new models of both the Tiger and Honda AT seem to have addresed these issues. My feelings are that the AT is now probably the better bike, what do you think? Cheers Gordon
@RevMonkey
@RevMonkey 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Gordon! You sound like me as that is probably how I would put it. I have held off buying an adventure bike until the new AT is out. I've actually put a deposit on it just in case. The problem really is that the one I want (Sports Adventure with DCT and the top suspension) is just over 16K which brings in the GS. I think the new AT might be a giant killer so I can';t proceed with anything else as much as I would like something through the winter. I suspect that I will follow through with my purchase when I get my first ride on one - though, damn, the 1200 Tiger in XRT spec is also that price and is awesome. Agh... too many manufacturers making too many good bikes! What's a man to do!! :) Ade

@@RevMonkey Hi Ade, as you say all the new bikes these days are good, I suppose the trick is to determine which has the features /looks and ride that differentiates them and thats where the reviews help. I am currently riding a Honda X-ADV (after a: Hornet 900, Crossrunner, Tiger 800 XRT), my trouble is I find the X-ADV boring and not very exciting. It is a pretty good bike and is easily good for doing well over three figure mph and would be good for touring, but I don't tour, I just do local rides (3 hours), so what to do, I think the new base AT would work, but there again is it too off-road biased? And it's cost, I think I'm heading to the new Tiger 800 but there again, have they fixed the tramlining. decision, decisions. Cheers Gordon

@@gordonLP Ha, I know that feeling. I go on so many bikes, actually choosing one is a nightmare. Tell you what is the dark horse - one I have yet to ride - is the Multistrada 950 - not too much more money than the Tiger 800. I will go on it soon I hope. Ade

@@RevMonkey Hm, agree it does look quite good and I did go over to my local Ducati (and KTM and Triumph) dealer in Ashford to have a look at it, I didn't sit on it as it was buried deep in a bunch of other bikes, but it looks pretty tall (I'm only 5'8"/ 28" inseam, and I haven't checked out the official seat height). It will be interesting to see your review and hear your verdict between the bikes if you manage to get a demo. Cheers Gordon

@@gordonLP Ah, yeah, a 28 inch inside makes some of these bikes a bit to wieldy at low speeds and stopping. They are all fairly similar so, for me, it will likely come down to the best features on the bike and the finance deal to be honest. I'd be happy with any of them. Ade

What about the 900 GT in comparison?
@RevMonkey
@RevMonkey 4 жыл бұрын
Yeah, big rival. Similar price, comes with some good standard bits. I think the Tracer GT looks better as well. I like both Marques equally so it would be a hard decision for me. The Tracer engine is better IMO so would get that. However, if I had the money I would still get the 1200. Ade

Ha, great question. I think it would have helped sliighty but the tech, poise and power of the 1200 is a big draw for me personally - so it would always win for me and I would just have to stomach the extra payment amount and play it down with the missus :) Ade
