Hi Zach, I'm just getting back into riding the last year, been on a road bike I built up, trying to get back into shape, and I've watched many videos regarding fixed gear, something I've not done since the seventies. I've got a State bike coming next day or two, fixed gear, and am looking forward to "getting back into it". It wasn't practical then, in Chicago, but I've really enjoyed watching you and some others, and figured to enter with "what's available" right now. I've been into really basic, down to earth living, long time, and you brought back some good memories, and hopefully I will enjoy it even more, with age. Thanks for some really detailed, interesting reviews, and an interesting perspective on life, I've lived around the world, "navy brat", then a jarhead for a couple decades, and really enjoy the People. Thanks again.

Tubular tires are intended for high performance, professional use. Tubular tires can be ridden when flat. Professionals don't fix flat tires they change whole wheels with a new tire no matter what kind of tire they use goes flat. They can't ride at a normal racing speed but you can continue riding, waiting for the support to catch up. A flat tubular tire does not roll off the rim. Professionals know this and do this. The peloton doesn't wait for them when they get a flat. If you are a mere mortal, not a pro, you can replace a tubular tire on the road. The glue or tape you used is usually tacky (sticky) enough to hold your spare inflated tubular tire on the rim very well for the rest of your ride. Track tire glue doesn't work this way. Tubular tires don't need stiff side walls to stay on the rim and when used at any pressure they smooth a bumpy rutty road more than a clincher at the same pressure. The tubular's more flexible side wall lets the tire flex laterally in a corner giving a rider better control in a high speed corner.

Tubeless mountain bike technology is pretty mature at this point. I've ran my fat bike tubeless with zero issues for years now. I won't run them in my road bike that way yet. Just because the tires are quite a bit more expensive then normal tube version. It can be a nightmare to set up a tubeless ready road bike rim with a tube though. Especially if your putting something like a gatorskin on.
@parkerswanstrom4631
@parkerswanstrom4631 4 жыл бұрын
You make a lot of good points about the practicality of tubeless but I think you’re missing a few things... - As a trackie riding tubulars is about rolling resistance not weight. On a warm wooden track an indoor specific tub is going to be a lot faster - The reason why you get so little flats is because you’re running winter tires (gatorskins) year round. You’d experience flats more if you were riding faster tires, then you would notice the difference and tubeless would make more sense - Tubeless isn’t just about lower pressure in off road situations it’s about saving rolling resistance, weight and getting better grip If you’re not training or racing a standard tube setup is more than fine, I run tubes on my winter bike and road fixed gear. The important thing is that your tires give you the confidence to ride your bike how you want to. I always enjoy hearing a more practically based viewpoint from you as always Zach, great video as always.

Tubeless ,for me, is for MTB, cyclocross and gravel. At 100(+)psi a cut road tire will open up and just hose you with sealant. A thorn hole, no problem. A cut, you’ll be putting a tube in it anyway. It’s totally possible(to be tubeless on the road) and there getting better but.... not quite yet.
@galenkehler
@galenkehler 2 жыл бұрын
I've been running tubeless on the road for many years now, and I can honestly say this doesn't happen. First off you're not running 100+ psi, I'm 190lbs and 80psi is more than enough in a 25c tire. And cuts seal up just fine, occasionally there is a little spray but very little that easily wipes off.

Definitely clincher tires and marathon plus all the way. I definitely enjoy as well gator skins, however in this part of the UK the common cause for flats are thorns more than glass.

Reasons for tubeless 1. If you live in a thorny area 2. Off roading 3. Low pressures If I rode like Zach, I wouldn't be convinced either. All three of my bikes are tubeless (including my road bike), but I live in AZ and I off road. In the context of this audience, I agree with Zach.
@Divercitylife
@Divercitylife 4 жыл бұрын
But for reference. After one years of setting up my 3 inch tires tubeless, the tape is just now needing replaced, I refilled with sealant 4 times, I promise you there are 50 countable thorns (probably more like 100 punctures over their lifetime), and 2500 miles of rough rough desert riding. Tubeless is a godsend, of you are that type of rider.

Tubeless is good for running lower pressure to get better cornering in wet conditions. At the last Red Hook, it rained during the race and a lot of the guys were running 60psi or lower which was made possible by tubeless. Normally, I just corner very slowly and carefully in the rain, but if you're racing, then you don't have that option.
@MattSezer
@MattSezer 4 жыл бұрын
@BeboSaab Real athletes? Some of the top guys at Red Hook have raced in the Tour de France and the Olympics. It's very much a "real race" and being able to get traction at high speeds on tight turns in the pouring rain is critical to being able to win.

My chain came of the front whilst I was going down a hill then my chain wrapped twice around my rear sprocket pulling my wheel forwards on the one side (vertical dropout) and wedging it into the opposite drive side chain stay and I then went into a huge skid and now a the most horrific flat spot so I’m working out what tyres to buy now

Honest question from someone that has never ridden a fixie. How do ride steep hills, like 10% or more? I live in a hilly city and rely on my derailleurs for hills up to 2 miles in length. Most have a gradient of 4-8% with 10 being common. Could a fixie work in this situation? Also, if I go up I have to come down.

Pro roadies used to ride tubulars mainly for one reason: you can keep riding without the tire rolling off the rim when you get a flat. In a race this means you can remain with the group until your mechanic's car catches up with you for a wheel change. This preference has been shifting towards tubeless for the past few years though

I use tannus solids on my bike won’t worry about flats at all. Haven’t had them long and are kind of stiff but they’re not really broken in yet. Solid tires are nothing new they’ve been putting them on wheelchairs for decades. They make tire inserts instead of solids for some sizes. It’s an insert that protects the inner tube or makes a buffer zone for tubeless. Other than weight which isn’t unreasonable I don’t know why folks aren’t using these all the time.

What do you think about airless tires? In theory they sounds nice cause you'll never have to worry about flats but I don't know if they are any good for skidding and how they ride after the profile gets worn out...

I gave up on tubeless road tires a while ago. Just too much trouble. They don’t always seal themselves properly and you get sealant all over the bike. Both my road bikes have 28mm Gatorskins. Easy and simple to mount. On my MTB, tubeless makes more sense. Titanium. Yup. That’s where it’s at. My main road bike is Ti. I just got a Ti frame for gravel. It’s gonna be gorgeous. Strong, smooth, and no worry about cracking - like with carbon. Unfortunately, the quirks of Ti manufacturing will always require of bit of a premium price.

I'd like to see titanium bikes become more affordable myself, but because of the base price of raw materials and the extremely high degree of difficulty in working and welding titanium, I don't think we're going to get that anytime soon. You have confused me. Near the start of the video during the discussion on tubeless tires, you state that your bike has 25 mm Continental Gatorskins. Near the middle of the video during the discussion of ride comfort, you state that you wouldn't put tires on your bike that are narrower than 28 mm. So which is it that you have, 25 mm or 28 mm?

I get guys trying to convince me to 'go tubeless bro' but I still refuse. Guys still carry a tube if all else fails, and I know that happens. Messy, technical, and not fail-proof. I also consider riding style. I am c o n s t a n t l y scanning for debris, and I don't ride much on the shoulder of roads. That's where all the crap and junk to run over is. I've ridden across the US once and only got 4 flats - one was a tube failure near a spoke nipple - But quality tires and stop riding over garbage and you won't get many flats.
