When I originally saw some Groo the Wanderer comics online that were from Turkey, I assumed they were knock-off bootlegs (because the art was obviously NOT drawn by Sergio Aragonés. Then I managed to buy a couple and it seems like they're traced versions of Sergio's Epic Groo comics. They seem kind of legitimate too. You'll have to watch and decide for yourself though. Turkish Groo the Wanderer is Sevimli Barbar, the "Cute Barbarian"

Videos about Groo the Wanderer from Mad Magazine Writer and Cartoonist Sergio Aragonés. Comic Book artist Mark Evanier, Stan Sakai (who makes Usagi Yojimbo comics) and Tom Luth who is the colorist of the comics. Marvel comics used to publish Groo the Wanderer under the Epic Comics brand for artist owned comics. Before that Pacific Comics and Eclipse Comics published Groo the Wanderer. After Marvel Comics, Groo went to Image Comics for a year and for the longest time, Groo is published by Dark Horse Comics. Rufferto is Groo's Dog, Conan the Barbarian and Tarzan of the Apes have had crossover comics with Groo too.

I love how you explored the quirkiness of these books from the new content (and fan content - too good) to the art itself, especially well presented with the overlay comparisons. The newspaper comic strip quality of the tracing is fascinating to me, as well as the choices made for the sake of cropping to that format. Seeing Tom's color and Sergio's detailed inkwork juxtaposed against stark b&w minimalized cartoon tracings really gives a new appreciation for the original art. What an impression 80's Turkish fans must have had of Groo! I'm glad they've gone to a deserving home where they'll be mulch loved! I'm tickled that you're getting use out of that fun bookmark too, it's the perfect Groo Tube page marker. I'm looking forward to watching what you do with what's in the rest of the box, and glad to be along for the ride. :) Great video!

Well, thank you Michael! Some folks are very precious about their collections, and while I try not to be rough with mine, I like to read, use, p play with mine. So, I’m glad you’re not disappointed with my use of the Groo bookmark! 😀 And yes! Lots more to explore from that box! 😉

This is so weird. I was just talking with my girlfriend yesterday about colorists. Comparing them to a drummer of a band... and now you give great examples of how they're much more than that. Tom Luth filling in gaps to provide additional visual content 00:07:55, and even setting a mood with a panel 00:11:11 Good stuff!

Brings back memories of the sorts of comic books I grew up with as a kid in India. The 'Heavenly Kid' movie ad dates these to 1985 I guess?

You got it, these particular stores would have been from the second half of 1985 originally published by Marvel/Epic comics. 😀

Great video. Also very nice quality editions. According to Mark Evanier, the Turkish publisher decided it was cheaper to pay someone to do those awful tracings than to pay Sergio per page. Also, Turkish Groos were originally published in seven 2-issue publications that covered Epic issues 1-14. So for those of you keeping score, there are 11 Turkish Groo publications.

Always great to hear from you! 😀 I asked Mark, as I was putting together the video, but he’s been pretty busy working and didn’t get back to me on my questions… maybe another video. 😉 It seems like Sevimli Barbar was an additional/extended publication run done after the initial Turkish Groo en Barbar (which I believe had 7 unique covers.)

@@GrooTube Yes, the covers are copies of Epic Groo covers. I'll get them out and send you scans if you'd like. As for the 4 issue books, what I recall being told is that when the first books didn't sell well (gee, I wonder why horrible tracings of Sergio's art didn't sell well) they tried the 4 issue books, which didn't sell well either. I also have a Turkish Conan book with a Groo cover on the back and it's interior is NOT traced.

I'm surprised those two covers aren't identical. The Groo logo seems to be rotated a bit from one to the other.

Oooh. Interesting observation! I’ll have to check. It’s a funny little green stamp of a logo, eh? Almost like an afterthought. “Cute Barbarian” Oh yeah… “groo” 😉

It definitely looks like a photocopy of the title block from that era that's been shrunk and cropped and stamped in green ink, both a little off from each other.

Oh yeah. I’ve got both issues in my hand right now. Definitely the green Groo is at different angles and positions on the two covers. But it looks like it was printed as part of the cover to me, not stamped on after printing.
