Hey everyone, thanks for watching! This was the hardest Movie Fight yet! To answer a few questions in the comments: - My Raid 2 shirt is in German because it's the only one I could find - My reaction to Nick's Joss Whedon answer was little intentionally over-the-top (a little), but he genuinely almost made me use the f-word. - I love Nick, he's a very good friend. We leave all our Movie Fights animosity on the field. - The show is 100% not pre-determined or fixed. I actually went into it thinking Nick or Spencer would win. I'm due for a loss! - I love Kubrick's The Shining, but I stand by my stance that a closer adaptation of the novel would also be a great film. - Other movies I could've argued for as the best of the 21st century: Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Requiem for a Dream, Inglourious Basterds, Shaun of the Dead, Fellowship of the Ring - and a bunch more!

I can't believe Nick got the point for Round 3, Joss Whedon's next project. Just picking "something original" is not only a cop-out, it's also unfair to the other fighters. It's so much harder to argue against the general idea of "a great Joss Whedon movie" than refuting a specific idea point-by-point. He should have at least had to pitch a genre or some direction at all.
@taqu
@taqu 9 жыл бұрын
taqu I also don't think Nick should've won Round 5, about which character needs a prequel, though that's only my personal opinion. I really liked Spencer's idea about Dumbledore and Grindelwald. Dan said that we've seen that already, but we actually haven't, because the story of Grindelwald and Dumbledore's sister was left out of the movies. It was a BIG plot point in the last book and really tied in to the other things that were happening, giving us insight into the character of Dumbledore as well as his relationship with Harry and the surrounding wizarding world. This was one of biggest omissions in my opinion, so I'd love to see a stand-alone movie about it.
@DudeMakeLoveNotWar

+taqu "What should Joss Whedon's next movie be" doesn't say "pitch me Joss Whedon's next movie." It seems perfectly fine to me. In all cases, you're not pitching the movie anyway; you're saying why it's a good idea. The argument ultimately comes down to this: another big budget superhero movie, an out there remake, or an original concept? That seems like a totally fair fight.
@taqu
@taqu 8 жыл бұрын
ncolaros I don't think the technicalities of the way the question was phrased matter that much because, after all, this isn't a very formal show. It's not so much a question of can he argue it (since Andy ruled he can, that about settles it) but SHOULD he argue it. I'm not saying he should've made a specific pitch, but giving us some sense of what sort of movie it could be - general themes, genre etc. - and at the very least explaining how and why Wheadon could deliver a good original movie right now would've improved that round a lot. His only real arguments were against the others, not for his own, about why we don't want to see another adaptation. His answer was valid, but the only concrete things he came up with were that he should get 300 million and free hands, relying on his faith on Wheadon's skills to come up with something amazing (even though not every, or even most, directors work well under those conditions or have realistic and interesting dream projects), which basically means its up to your imagination. As I said, it's hard to argue against "a good Joss Wheadon movie" if you don't even specify WHAT makes a good Joss Wheadon movie. Really, if you want to break it down, the only other concept you can argue on an equal level to an original idea would be an adaptation - and I guess documentary could be counted as third. But since this is about Wheadon, it has to be a little more than that. I suppose if the the arguments had truly been "a superhero movie", "original idea" and "an adaptation (other than superhero)", everyone would've been on the same page at least (and not arguing about the semantics). Instead, Spencer and Dan both gave more concrete answers and Mundy got to poke holes in the specifics. I don't know about you, but I think that the well-thought out arguments and passionate fights are what make this show interesting and entertaining. While I don't care who wins, giving him the point makes it feel like Andy is encouraging giving short answers that don't leave much for discussion instead of good arguments. I've seen this in other episodes, too - Mundy sometimes uses lack of specific ideas as a way to foolproof his overall argument against criticism, which I guess can be a good way to win a fight but does not make it a good or interesting debate. Here's an example that I think helps illustrate my point: If this had been about Tim Burton's next project, a very valid (and growingly popular) pick would've been an original movie that goes back to his roots. Here you would explain what you think are his roots, when he was at his very best and most original. Then deconstructing what elements made those movies so great. Then looking at people Burton has worked with and saying what collaborations have and haven't worked (Depp or no Depp, etc.), what new tricks he could use to make it new and not just a nostalgic attempt at renewing his glory. Then you could explain why this a good time for this, talking about his latest pretty terrible projects and why they have gone so wrong. Lastly, you could add that making it on a small budget would make it more personal and intimate, without reliance on CGI. Btw, even though I just barfed a whole lot of words on this comment section's floor, it's actually been a while since I saw this episode and commented, and I had to refresh my memory on why I had commented and felt this way. I still agreed, but I didn't then and don't know feel now that strongly about this (who gets the point is not something I take seriously on its own, I just don't like to see a simple argument that made a fight less interesting and entertaining get a pass from Andy), I just think it's interesting to try to explain my point better. Debate, and all that. I know some people automatically assume a lot of text means defensive and therefore aggressive on KZfaq, but I enjoy long discussion.

Round 2 bothered me a lot. Nick's pitch made sense and was not at ALL confusing, and somehow 3 grown, presumably intelligent, men could not seem to follow or understand it? Now Dan and Spencer could just argue that they were just saying that to win the round, but for Andy to claim to not understand the pitch... well that was just embarrassing. Whoever said "No one wants to see kids having sex" clearly didn't listen to ONE WORD that Nick said as that was not his pitch. The same actors playing the same characters, who are now older, having graduated Hogwarts, are now in college/University and dealing with those issues mixed with magic. Simple. Nothing even remotely complicated about that concept. Also the argument that the target audience is kids isn't true as the target audience for these movies have grown up with the movies and are just as old as the actors.It's still Harry Potter so it is still the same franchise. Daredevil is the same franchise as Guardians of the Galaxy and one is dark and bloody and the other is colorful and happy. I am not saying that Nick should have won, but I was shocked at how everyone acted like he wasn't making sense. Especially when Spencer argues a very similar concept a few fights later.
@Wasabifold

TalixZen But you yourself missed the point. The question was, WHAT FRANCHISE SHOULD BE REDONE AS RATED R? Get it? Your taking the franchise and redoing it from scratch with an R-rating. The question asks you to take a franchise that would benefit or have benefited if the movies were made R-rated from the get go and all the different plot devices that come with that rating. Nick totally missed the point, pitching a sequel and not a remake, he tried to salvage it later, but it was obvious he misunderstood. It was not what franchise could continue with R-Rated sequels (which is basically what Harry Potter: The College Years is), but should have been made R-rated from it's start, due to the subject matter it was tackling and changes in the characters that the series want to invoke and the feelings they try to draw from the audience. As such, Harry Potter is not a good fit cause an R-rated adventure about kids learning to be wizards in a school environment does not work. Apes and Hunger Games are natural choices as the topic choices are very mature. Apes was probably a better choice and an easier one to pitch. Hunger Games should have been R but had the misfortune of its main fanbase being teens and needing to get the fanbase into the seats was more important than the intellectual integrity of it's subplots.
@Wasabifold
@Wasabifold 9 жыл бұрын
***** There was a clear underlying implication that it was dealing with a preexisting franchise that was done not in rater R, but should have been. That's how I saw it and that's how everyone else interpreted it. They didn't reject his answer due to technicality anyways. It was a garbage answer and a garbage setup. You can't argue BS and make it look like gold.
@chriskurtz3274
@chriskurtz3274 9 жыл бұрын
Wasabifold it was more than underlying lol. it was the question. i loved nick's creativity in the first two rounds but he fucked that one up. if lotr was your answer for instance than it would be the story of frodo getting the ring to mordor with and r rating (so the style would be more like GoT, for instance) not a r-rated elf spring break spin-off (as much as mundy would like to see that)
@k9commander
@k9commander 9 жыл бұрын
Wasabifold "The question was, WHAT FRANCHISE SHOULD BE REDONE AS RATED R?" If that was the case, then Spencer should be eliminated as well since his pitch was for the upcoming Apes movies. He was talking about using the R rating to truly show man's descent. That would be in the upcoming movies not the ones already made. The last movie started showing their descent. The next movies would benefit from the R rating by showing the humans doing horrible things that they can't do in PG 13. He even said so himself. Both were talking about the next chapter of the story. I'm not gonna argue which deserves an R rating. Just wanted to point something out.

Wasabifold You said it yourself; "What Franchise SHOULD BE REDONE AS RATED R?" You telling me that in the process of redoing the franchise they couldn't just make the change to update the age group to fit with the theme? It's not like the first franchise that was redone to accommodate a shift in tone (either adult or more child-like). But even if you move you don't like that, we are still remaining in the same franchise. We're not talking about future iterations, and this is why Spencer would be disqualified. No one is arguing to use them in High School years in an R setting.

Ultimate Game Of Thrones movie? the conquest of Westeros. I would love to see Robert Rebellion but by the end of the tv show, I think we would have covered that, a movie would be redundant. As for the building of the wall, it happened 8000 years ago, it belongs to legend, we don't really know how they built it, it's apparently bond with magic, I don't want to witness the construction, I want it to be that mysterious ancient thing that is part of the lore of Westeros. The conquest of Westeros would have everything we love about the show in a more epic scale, the dragons, the violence, the politics (and even the incest :P) the fans would recognize some of the locations and nods to the show like Harrenhal, the king who bent the knee, Dorne's moto and the non viewers would get a new absolutely epic adventure.
@karelzjinec
@karelzjinec 8 жыл бұрын
+Woohoo! Lifeisamazing Well that movie can be covered in one sentence: Aegon arrived on top of the dragon and sloughtered everybody. That story would be this and this only. harrenhal was greatest fortress ever built. Bring dragons and it is ruin. Gardener king had the greatest army in westeros. Bring dragons and here we have a Field of fire. There would be no tension. On the other hand I would like to see it for efects and for acting but that is same for rebelion. Trident, Sumerhall those were battles fought by man where anyone could have won.

You guys should just change the judge for a while. I'm not gonna say that Andy makes it easy for Dan, but man, since that first Game of Thrones fight, in which Spencer clearly made the best argument and still lost, I kinda knew Dan would get it (and not because he is better at it, but 'cause Andy seems to agree too much with Dan's Ideas). I mean, the thing you guys did with three judges at the end, was good, but Andy still called it, and I also thought the "you didn't respond to Dan with a H. Macy film" a bit arbitrary. Anyway, changing the judge (maybe someone from outside the Screen Junkies Circle, cause I also think that having all finalists being from the show a little bit symptomatic as well) would do good to movie fights.

João Bley While I agree that Spencer should have won the first round, Dan should have won the second. So really, Andy is very inconsistent. I don't think it's favouritism, it's just he's unable to separate personal biases from people's choices properly.

João Bley I think they all know, if Dan loses, he'll have a temper-tantrum ... like with Nick's answer in round 3. He takes it too seriously. I personally don't like watching Dan in these movie-fights because he drags the fun down.
@PurpleBadger
@PurpleBadger 9 жыл бұрын
João Bley I agree 100%. Dan didn't even say what happened in his movie beyond 'see how the wall's built'. The drama is what people love about Game of Thrones & it's like the biggest thing right now so even if only fans go see it, that's millions of people. You don't make a Fast movie about dialogue and intense political debate in hopes of getting more people...? And from there, it was just... everything Dan says that's vaguely sensical, Andy hails. It's gonna' be boring if that's gonna' be the way of it always.
@Wasabifold
@Wasabifold 9 жыл бұрын
PurpleBadger Get out of town. What Dan said is definitely a great suggestion. In the big budget world of movie, the amount of money a studio would through behind a Game of Thrones movie is definitely the perfect opportunity to explore more of that fantasy that Game of Thrones teases but doesn't have the budget to do. White walkers and the importance of the wall is pivotal to the whole series and we barely get to see them. This way we can explore a fresh story that will give the action and fantasy and I'm sure they won't skimp on the politcal side of it either. The Stark/Baratheon coup is hardly something the show can't cover, as it is relatively recent. But a White walkers and inauguration of the wall is definitely something fans will want to see as well. Now I definitely agree Spencer made the better points that round, but Dan's suggestion was never about alienating the politcal tension(he just neglected to mention it in his pitch and Spencer capitlized excellently), but was instead about exploring the fantastical setting in a way TV show budgets cannot do. Both excellent choices and stop riding the Andy loves Dan train. Dan's suggestion was not bad in any way, in fact his is more likely to get made if you were to pitch it to a studio. That way the studio can secure their own cast and build their own story, more room for franchise building as well as any story they do won't encroach on the current show.

@Wasabifold
@Wasabifold 9 жыл бұрын
Chris Kurtz Learn what reaching means. I'm not reaching at all. But Dan gave a specific franchise and gave reasons why not only that franchise needed but what Joss Whedon could potentially add. (The lack of palpable wit and charm in DC movies is glaringly apparent, and he talked about why Joss Whedon's style and what he's done with Avengers is really what DC needs) With Nick's answer he basically got a free pass without having to talk about why Whedon would suit the theme of any specific franchise, or having to dicuss what Whedon can bring to the table. None of those things he had to consider. All he had to do was sorta discredit the other two, without pushing anything for himself. And Andy ate it up. A cop out is an answer that allows you to not have to work as hard as another answer. The easy way out. Whether it was a legitimate answer or not, (I believe it was) it IS a cop out. The cop out answer for that question.

I think There Will Be Blood wasn't really understood by Nick. It doesn't fall apart in the last 20 minutes, because it shows what happens when Plainview is consumed by his own ambition/anger/madness. The last words, "I'm finished", leave the viewer questioning what exactly he was thinking (is he done being angry? Does he finally feel like his life is complete? Has this outburst happened before so much that it's commonplace? Etc) It perfectly illustrates his frustration as a character.

HOLD THE PHONE! First, Rhaegar Targaryen kidnapped Neds sister alone, the Mad King had nothing to do with that. Second, the Mad King was Daenerys' dad, not grandpa. And making a Game of Thrones movie, throwing all the complex elements over board fans of the show learned to love, to appeal to a movie audience who don't appreciate and love like the people who have committed timed and money to it? Fuck that.

***** It's money, money, money. Anyway, I don't think the movie about the 'Long Night' is a good idea, because it sets an expectation different from what the show actually delivers. Like, the movie is about epic battles and monsters and good vs evil. General fantasy stuff. Is that what Game of Thrones is? I honestly think that Robert's Rebellion would make a better movie. If you make it a decent length, then you have enough time to introduce the characters and get the audience familiar with them, and then you can get into the nitty gritty stuff.
@Krustenkaese92
@Krustenkaese92 9 жыл бұрын
AlmostLikeHuman Yes, it is even very likely that she went with him, cause it is implicated that they had something going on, with Lyanna crying when Rhaegar was singing this song n stuff. And yes, that title is despicaple. But I really would love to see Roberts Rebellion onscreen :)
@Krustenkaese92

Will Mael yeah, a movie about the Long Night is basically Lord of the Rings. And I love Lord of the Rings for what it is, but GoT ain't that, which is the reason I love GoT. I love it because it turns all fantasy tropes on its head! Making a GoT movie that basically diminishes all what sets GoT apart from all of other Fantasy works is a giant load of jizz onto GRRMs and the fans face.
@FarisFauzi14
@FarisFauzi14 9 жыл бұрын
***** I will never say that Long Night or even any other stories in the asoiaf do not have game of thrones flavour to it..they are stories told from generation to generation, i bet they only say on what happened and nothing more behind the scenes and the actual political madness behind it..I believe that if they want to do it they can write a much more complicated 'game of thrones' type of script based on the same plot for whichever stories that they want..

joel otero I'm surprised Nick Mundy didn't want The Rock as Doc Brown. Maybe he got some coaching from Patton Oswalt. Maybe in the style of Metal Slug and The Fast and the Furious. Just like in The Butterfly Effect, he will attempt to change his past which will be seemingly perfect until he finds out the consequences of changing events in time. It's the reason why he freaks out every time Marty messes with the past/future. Here is where it gets even freakier. *Takes another swig of that Nick Mundy kool-aid* His attempts to change his past distorts reality causing the past and the future to get intertwined into the same time line because he was always a little selfish about his "corrections". While trying to correct time, he must fight Nazi jelly fish aliens and zombies while racing through time and space in his nuclear powered Delorean. You later find out that Doc Brown is really just a title, and the real reason how he figured out how to time travel is because he's part Time Lord. The Doc Brown we know is actually his last regeneration. End of prequel 1 of 12. In the ending, credits we see him regenerating into his next incarnation played by Jonah Hill with Seth Rogen directing the next film. Each prequel will have a different tone from the next.

***** The question was "which FRANCHISE should be R-Rated". If the Harry Potter FRANCHISE continues past the books, they'd be inventing new material since the book series ended, and if they kept the same cast, they'd be college age. It's not a spin-off at all. For example, the Ghostbusters FRANCHISE is continuing with a new all-female cast. Is that a spin-off or is it part of the FRANCHISE? How many times can I say "franchise" in caps? Place your bets now...

Oh yeah, Children of Men too. Inception and The Dark Knight maybe. The Dark Knight isn't a great film, it's a good film, but it's very iconic. Spencer's choice: The Wolf of Wall Street is a good film, not a great film. Some of the scenes craft isn't that good, what I mean is for example DiCaprio and McConaughey are talking at the lunch and there is no backround voice from the other people in the restaurant. Also Scorsese sometimes went for kind of easy laughs.

DocWeaselheart I meant Jeremy Scott from CinemaSins. He makes pretty decent points regarding movies (whether they be nitpicks of individual films, legitimate criticisms of Hollywood practices, or just some jokes about the tropes often seen in movies). Screen Junkies actually did a crossover with his channel once (Amazing Spiderman 2). Keep in mind, I was mainly referring to his points on his personal channel (CinemaSins Jeremy) when it comes to legitimate arguments about movies. The main channel (CinemaSins) is mostly comedy but is still rooted actual plot holes being pointed out.

Iron Man 2 was awesome. It introduced Nick Fury, Black Widow and freakin War Machine. Action was amazing, suitcase armour was badass and it was important for the whole MCU. Iron Man 3 was much worse. The trailers were a bunch of lies, they made Tony Stark stupid and a pussy, they ruined the Iron Man suits (they were made out of LEGO's), Mandarin was a joke, fire people didn't fit the movie, and it didn't have any impact on the rest of the MCU. And that last line "you can take away my suit, but I am still Iron Man"? NO! Without the suit you are nothing, just a puny man. By the way they stole that from Batman...

Martynas Valanciunas LEGO suit lol.. yeah everything you said was true. Tony was a wimp, the suit was falling apart and useless (not to mention he spent too much time out of the suit), they just didn't respect the suit at all in that film. And the fire people was sooo stupid. I hated that movie. I liked Iron Man 2, Justin Hammer was funny as hell, the scene where he was selling Hammer tech, Sam Rockwell was fantastic in that film.

I'm surprised Mundy didn't have Christopher Lloyd be an old Doc Brown from the future as a cameo/supporting role to his younger self. Young Doc could be going around the world/america, trying to invent things and giving inspiration to others (unknowingly) for the internet, iPod, etc, and then he runs into his older self, but his older self is just flummoxed because he has no memory of running into himself at all. We'll find out at the end of the movie that his mind got wiped form the concussion he received when he smashed it against his sink, but what he _does_ remember, is the flux capacitor. The tension of the timeline being fractured is eliminated when we find out this chance meeting always had happened, but Doc Brown just didn't remember it.

I thought Nick had the most creative arguments. Thought this was Dan's weakest performance (the Shining? Nick was right- been done). Spencer argues intelligently but his choices are obvious or just bad. Nick should have at least made the speed round.
@cajoz
@cajoz 9 жыл бұрын
I've read The Shining, and I still don't agree. Putting the TV movie aside, which I've actually seen, I don't think I could involve myself in a remake unless the director made the female lead a nervous wreck, a good luck outdoing JN unless you're Heath Ledger. I've read the book, I get the book, I've seen the movie. Spencer is also right when he says it's sacrilege in a way. Everything would have to come together perfectly for it to work and be a better movie. Can't see that happening.
@cajoz
@cajoz 9 жыл бұрын
But that's the point mundy and spencer were making- and I agree with. Of course you'd want it to be done well, but it inevitably would be done a little less well (in our opinion), albeit differently. I didn't like Spencer's choice either, for the same reason, kind of. It would be a parody of itself, and no matter what you feel going into the movie, you'd be at some level comparing it with the original, and the chance of Anderson pulling that off, though higher than most filmakers, would still be low. In fact, I reckon that if you were to ask Anderson himself, I'd bet on him declining to do it for the same reasons. But I guess none of us will ever know unless he were to. Agree to disagree.

I agreed with everything but the first battle. Spencer was by far right. A prequel set 16 years before about the first time the Iron Throne was ever overthrown since it was built is WAY more interesting than the creation of The Wall. Also, I agreed with Nick's Memento, but he missed a crucial fact which is the other two are based on books and Memento is an entirely original movie and could never work as a book, but only work as a movie. Great episode though with great people and fighters. Scott Mantz was an awesome fact checker. #stillwatching

Did they think the Dark Knight was an easy pick for best movie of the 00's or did they really just not like it as much as the others? kind of confused as a lot of people like to argue that it is one of the best movies ever. I wouldn't go as far to say that but I think this one should have been an no brainer for the 00's.

TeamFruitSalad The Dark Knight, as much as it is a good movie, is no contender for the BEST movie of the 00s. Maybe the best comic book movie, but certainly not the best movie in general. There are tons of others that outweigh TDK in conceptual depth, execution, approach, cinematography, screenplay, etc. TDK is every fanboy's first love, and it certainly broke ground in the world of comic book movies. But compared to the greats that came in the 2000s, it's pretty much a non-contender.

***** Spirited Away as well. This is practically a golden age for films once more. The Dark Knight, as i mentioned, is nowhere near as intriguing and thought-provoking as the ones you have mentioned, as well as the ones that have been made. Birdman, King's Speech, Hurt Locker, etc. So many excellent ones that are so legitimately great, The Dark Knight would be minute in their shadow.

The Dark Knight has a lot of plot holes and also it's a film that you think more, it gets worse. It's a good movie thou. Heath Ledger is amazing in it, the score is amazing and the cinematography has this great noir kind of vibe to it. But the movie is quite overrated.
