My fiance and I agreed to open our relationship last year. He's 30 and I'm 28. We agreed the rules would be that we could sleep with others but we would only have an emotional relationship with each other. We are due to marry this summer.
I have decided that I no longer wish to continue and want to close the relationship because I feel that it's affecting our relationship. I'm still determining how to do this.
I have had purely s-xual relationships with four men and that was it. Nothing more. He was having s-x with around four or five women but there was nothing more to it.
Story 1:
[UPDATE] My fiance and I agreed to have an open relationship a year ago, but I want to close it because I suspect he is secretly forming an emotional relationship with one woman he's been s-xual with
Story 2:
I (20F) pushed my (19M) boyfriend into an open relations and now I'm afraid he's gonna leave me
Story 3:
Me [29F] with my boyfriend [31M] of 2 years not happy with our open relationship and his new "girlfriend" [24F]

Every time I read a story like this, it plays out almost identically. The women are overwhelmingly the majority of the ones who want to open the relationship up, with the men either reluctant or outright against the idea. The man is eventually convinced and at first everything goes well for the woman, she gets laid a bunch of times and has her fun. Then she notices that *shocker* he is also getting laid or spending a bit too much time with one specific lady. The woman gets uncomfortable and nervous and then demands they both close the relationship, but most of the time the man has found someone who only wants him and not multiple men. Break up ensues.

I've read way more stories about guys who want to open a relationship, and then freak out when they realize it means their wife gets to sleep with other men. Or get mad that she's getting dates and he's not, or that his bi wife isn't solely dating women. I suspect you might be misremembering out of bias.

Truth is, if a woman expresses desire for an open relationship, for most men it kills their romantic feelings. Softer men might agree to it and hang on from fear of total loss of the relationship, but a strong man will simply walk out, as they should.

I’m so glad people react this way to those who suggest open relationships. I have always felt grossed out by trying to keep someone on the hook emotionally and sometimes financially so that one can go and do whatever they feel like when they feel. Commitment comes with sacrifice and what you get is so much greater. Trust, respect and love, a life together.

But he got to have his cake and eat it too and in the process realised that there was something better for him. He's a bit of an AH for not breaking up with her sooner. She doesn't want to close the relationship because he's "emotionally cheating" on her, rather because he managed to be somewhat successful in the new arrangement and that was never her plan.

Is kinda funny and stupid how mess up her idea of Love and relationship is. proposing a open relationship to her partner, from this point on, its over and already shows that she doesn't have any commitment to a serious relationship to Begin with she talks about getting married after this? WTF, if she loved him, she would never proposed this shit, and she just started this because of lust, and then she bounces in four different cocks, and says that he "emotionally cheated on her" because he cares and loves another woman that is serious about a relationship commitment, while he clearly said to her that this open bullshit made him fell empty and meaninless. She is dump as fuck, and he is too for not saying right from the beginning to her face To "fuck off, if you want so much to have sex with other guys why you are in a relationship with me then? Its over" he should have said from the beginning that this is bullshit and it is over from that moment on.

@@julianpuentes2361 This reminds me of something. I was dating someone once, she was a "single" mother. I say "single" because it turns out she was still married and even when she denied it she kept close communication with him, replying to his every text every single time (this is important because according to her, constant texts gave her anxiety so she hadn't replied to some people in months) and it hardly was about their kid. I will never know what truly happened but it turns out they had sex at some point (she said it was rape but she never made an attempt to do anything about it. No therapy, no going to the authorities, no nothing. I'm pretty sure she even defended him at some point) and from that point onwards I lost interest in that relationship because I was just there to pretty much take care of her son (he was special needs. Don't take it the wrong way, he was a nice kid but he could be really difficult at times because of this) and that was it (he even saw me as a dad at some point and it was only there and then when she took an issue with something). Eventually I met a nice coworker that really understood me, we supported each other in different ways and we had some kind of connection. At this point I had forgotten the other one (the one with a child) existed until I thought on starting a relationship with my coworker, I wanted to end things up with the other one and I guess all went well until she tried to gaslight me into accepting I "cheated" on her because I was already seeing somebody else (the nerve of that one, am I right?).

Unless you guys discussed and tried different ways to be satisfied before hand, then you are pretty much just writing off his emotions as being nothing since just going off and having intimacy with others isnt going to work for both of you. By the way it sounds it seems like you didnt really treat him with the respect and support he needed, nor with the love he needed. Idk... I am not opposed to open relationships (I’m poly) but here is the thing. People don’t randomly become poly in my opinion. It’s something that’s discussed from the beginning. Now if you have been happy monogamous for years and then one day you’re like “ I wanna fuck other people” and your partner isn’t on the same page then it’s the beginning of the end. They should’ve gone to a therapist, not fuck other people. It sounds like there were a focus on her needs and not his. She says she's not jealous about her looks but even back-handedly insulted the FWBs cup size, the lowest blow a woman can go for. Oh, dear. She's 100% jealous that he finds this woman attractive and is in complete denial that that's what bothers her. They always figure it's going to work out better for them than the man because they undervalue him and overvalue themselves. It's probably better to get cheated on, as at least then it's clear that you should get away from that person, with an open relationship you can get manipulated and continue to fall for traps in the future. Also you are wasting your time if you do agree to it, because it's not what you wanted to begin with, but now you can't move on fast enough so you are torn on how to deal with everything while your partner thinks it's the best idea that ever crossed their mind and doesn't even see how selfish it is. They either resolved themselves that the relationship was over and just tried to transition smoothly, or they were hurt badly and needed to time to end it completely. Other than that only a man that doesn't respect himself will stay in such a relationship. The only other way it could work is if you are very compatible as people, but you don't really love each other, it's more like your lifestyles fit each other very well and you living together is a very rational choice for both (she cooks, he can fix things around the house, etc.)

The talked about how they hated the lifestyle and just wanted a normal relation ship. They exchanged numbers and soon started dating, divorced their spouses and are now happily married. Both women don't understand men AT ALL. The moment they "floated the idea" they wanted an open relationship is when both men realized it was over. Men commit their time, emotions, and resources, as well as forego their personal dreams for a woman when they commit. "Opening the relationship" is a code women use with men when they're not committed, and men will withdraw their attention, time, emotions, and resources. Women are ALWAYS more expensive when a man wife's her up . And honestly, all he wants is a supportive and committed woman by his side.

The second girl is so self centered. She pressured her boyfriend into opening up the relationship, when he agrees after an entire week of her pressuring him, she wants to close it back up again. Doesn't it seem kind of suspicious that she slept with one particular guy from work? But when he does exactly what you do in an open relationship, she feels, and get this, betrayed. How does she not see how she betrayed him simply by asking to go sleep with other guys? Does she even realize how much it would hurt to imply that she is not sexually satisfying him? Because that's exactly what she implied by asking to open the relationship. Yet, she still says it felt like a slap to the face to *her*

Women invest time, trust, emotions, finances, and become very vulnerable, often giving up their identities taking a husbands' name, and many give up their lives to care for children. Yet, according to you, that is worth nothing. MEN need to show that they are worthy of a supportive, committed, woman. Notice how none of the women regret opening the relationship, they only regret the outcomes. The second girl even admits 'she should have slowly led up to an open relationship, instead of opening it right away'. This lends credence to the fact that these relationships were doomed before the relationships were even opened. These women couldn't handle monogamy, and if they start again, roping in some guy to be in a relationship with them, they would inevitably cheat or try to open the relationship again after marriage.

Open relationships can work and they have worked but you never open it when one you have someone you want to sleep with already in mind and two there's problems in the relationship. Opening it does not solve those problems and already having someone in mind is them just trying to justify the cheating. By being able to say hey we had an open relationship therefore it's not actually cheating.

Yep I 100% agree! LMAO open relationships ALWAYS backfire! and I think it's incredibly funny! The ONLY way for open relationships to work is if BOTH partners are 100% sure and are WILLING and BOTH want to and NEITHER have a specific partner in mind as the motivation for asking or agreeing. But majority of the time it's one partner who harasses their significant other into reluctantly agreeing and then they are just SHOCKED when it doesn't work out. I ALWAYS hear about one partner really wanting to open the relationship and the other opening the relationship reluctantly. Then that reluctant partner always ends up having a lot more fun and falling in love with someone else while the one who wanted the open relationship to begin with gets jealous and isn't happy and wants to close it again. The second girl ONLY wanted an open relationship so she could f**k her coworker and not feel bad about it. He WARNED her doing this would permanently change their relationship but she wanted to be the office bicycle so badly she didn't care. Now she's just sooo upset and just shocked when their relationship has permanently changed. I think it's absolutely hysterical.

Consent by coercion is not consent, as everyone should know.

So, can someone explain to me what is the point of an open relationship? I don't get it, if you're in a committed relationship you don't go sleeping with other people, if you want to sleep with multiple people then don't bother with a committed relationship. It just smacks of selfishness from whoever suggested it

ordinary people cannot deal with open relationship. physical and mental aspects are so interwoven in a mysterious way. you can’t say this is just physical. open relationships are a toxic idea that give you some opportunities in which you enjoy one romance after another, which ordinary people call cheating.

The moral of all these stories is do not think that opening your relationship will solve your bedroom issues
@ixcxe6663

1st story: I;ve typed this out so many times in response to other stories just like this. The entire "open relationship, swinging, polyamory lifestyle, etc. thing almost NEVER works out... 1) people have egos... and one partner will feel abandoned eventually, about 90% of the time. 2) People have emotions, which are reactive to displayed interest, and the person that brings up "opening a relationship" seldom considers the BOMB this is... because they've already BEEN thinking about it for some time, whereas the other is ususally hit with it out of the blue. Thus they have little time to form their opinion on the matter... so if they agree, they're already likely to feel as though they weren't enough.... and if they don't agree, their partner is likely going to be thinking about (if not actually) sleeping with others and end up resentful because their other person wasn't being "MODERN/ENLIGHTENED" enough. Which is simply the instigator falsely looking down on a partner that was actually satisfied with them. And eventually that formerly satisfied partner realizes that had the other person been satisfied... they never would have needed (or wanted) to think about or bring up the topic of opening the relationship to begin with. So for the other partner... saying either YES or NO to the situation is already a LOSING response. The only way for the committed partner to come out of that discussion/relevation (that their SO wants to sleep with other people) intact is to immediately break off the relationship. Not to give a Yes or No response. Because how this story ended is exactly how 90% or more of most "open relationships" usually end up.... they destroy the prior relationship. 3) As for the OP. She needs to take this as a life lesson... women "on the whole, but not all" CAN disconnect emotionally from sex more easily than men. Whreas the majority of men DO NOT find it so easy to "emotionally disassociate from" the sexual act... because if they WERE like that... chances are they wouldn't be committed to YOU in the first place and would be "playing the field" instead of making plans with you. THUS... if you have a man that IS committed... NEVER bring up the "open relationship" topic... unless your goal is to hurt and/or break up with him anyway.... because (as I've said) that's going to be the result 90% of the time. Think about it this way.... if YOU were actually committed to HIM.... why did you feel the need to open the relationship??? Is it perhaps because YOU were already entertaining the thought of other men/people??? How did you NOT think that woud have a negative impact on HIM??? Exactly what part of the phrase "I want to sleep with other people, but to be fair about it, you can sleep with other people too while I'm out banging X,Y.Z," sounds IN ANY WAY like the kimd of question a committed person would ask??? If you stop focusing on HIM, you'll soon realize that NONE of this was his doing.... YOU instigated it and left him in a "no win" scenario. And why should he continue to feel emotionally connected to someone who LIKED having him around... but wasn't proud enough of his commitment to her to RECOIPROCATE IT and NOT sleep with other people?? I suggest you all look up the term HYPERGAMY... and come to grips with your own ACTUAL CHARACTER and faults instead of imposing IMAGINARY ones on people who already have morals... like the OP's soon to be ex did... BEFORE he gave in to the OP's bullshit. You know, the "enlightened woman that sank/tanked her own relationship for some side action. Because thats EXACTLY what she did. The reason she focuses on HIM not sticking to what they agreed to is because she still (BLINDLY) cannot see how disrespectful the suggestion was, or how damaging her desire to, and actively sleeping with others, actually was. And that was the LYNCHPIN that began this whole mess. He was only stupid enough to play along with HER desire (likely due to inexperience) or a lack of ability to COMMUNICATE his true feelings on the matter. Because she placed HIM in a corner.... agree so she gets what she wanted.... or disagree and upset her in a manner that ends the relationship HE was already committed to (unlike her). So, as Ive said before... the ONLY way he would have come out of all this relatively UNDAMAGED is if he'd had the Ballz to break up with her as soon as she mentioned or brought up the subject... because she was MANIPULATING HIM. And if she still doesn't get that... then she's in DENIAL. Which is why she's acting like a lawyer "but he agreed upon x, y, z" instead of acting like the person that WRECKED her own relationship. And if he had broken up with her as soon as she suggested the "open relationship" she wouldn't have lost most of her respect for him (which was PROVEN the moment she opened her mouth, her banging people that weren't him simply SEALED that FACT. And perhaps after she was done crying (because he manned up and said, HELL NO, we're done)... they could have enventually gotten back together with CLEARER boundaries established. But like a fool... he ENABLED out of fear of losing her anyway... and lost all respect for her (as well as himself) in the process... until he found somene else that MIRRORED the boundaries and life he previously had with the OP.... you know... the one called COMMITTED MONOGAMY. Who in the ever-loving heck gets engaged (of all things) and then decides that sleeping with other people is a GOOD idea??? I'll tell you VERBATIM... people who have NO BUSINESS getting married in the first place. That's why I don't date LIBERALS... its like dating a CHILD in an adult body... they want to "play" and have almost everything their way... instead of Growing the F Up. HuGGz

If you're a woman and you approach your partner to open the relationship, there's a 99% chance your relationship is dead at that point. Everything that happens after is the dying throes of it. Any respectable guy at the point will simply use the time in that to find a new partner as this person did.

If my girl suggested an open relationship, I wouldn't even give her the satisfaction of a break-up. I'd nod along not saying much, "if this is what you want, then that's that I guess", and begin the process of dismantling the relationship as if it were an explosive device.

In the first story the OP simply can’t get it through her head that her relationship to her ex-fiance ended the day she proposed an open relationship. Talking about how what he did was wrong, cheating etc. when she literally forced his hand in this in a selfish manner, without any consideration for his feelings, is priceless. “Oh, we had rules bla bla and he broke them bla bla”. Well, she entered a monogamous relationship, so pressuring the partner for an open relationship is in itself a breaking of rules. She only wanted to close it because it didn’t suit her anymore, just like opening it only suited her at the beginning. Selfish people.

This is the biggest problem, for story 1, the dude most likely found someone just as attractive than his previous girl and on top of it, probably the new girl has shown more care and love than the main girl has shown him in a long time. The main girl didn’t get involved emotionally with the men she slept with, because maybe they weren’t up to her fiancé’s standards and probably couldn’t give as much financially wise to her.
