Eddie's early solo phrasing is one of a kind. Sort of stretchy or elastic bending sound along with his toying around with the timing of the song is the best as I can describe it. I still get that giddy feeling today like I did when I was a teenager when I hear one of these killer solos. Back in time when these albums were new and fresh I would analyze what he was doing on the vinyl record structure wise. I ended up finding that his solos appeared not to be planned or thought out note by note, but all feel on his part for each song. What a feeling to have the command of the instrument and be able to do what he and the other gifted rock/metal guitarists did and can do.

Well said, bro. I've found my favorite guitar players are typically the one like Eddie that shoot from the hip. That's when the magical playing usually happens :) Also, I still get the goosebumps listening to his stuff too. The "feel" is just amazing.

I've been playing since I was 12..(58 now) There's a shit load of guitarist teaching van Halen on the web... this cat 🐈 is by far Numero Uno.. Always great stuff..and Nails everything 100 percent

I always loved the early VH solos with his pentatonic licks. There is a flow that has with them that sound smooth and off the cuff. This has always been one of my favorite solos of his.

Yeah Ed definitely improvised a lot... he used to call it "falling down the stairs." You know where you are starting and ending, and the rest is just shooting from the hip. :) Thanks E Dog!

Wow! This is enlightening as I've never seen this solo broken down before. Always loved this solo, and thought it was a lot more complex, but it's largely parked in 12th position. This makes me understand and appreciate the greatness of Ed's phrasing, pure brilliance, there's no other way to put it! Thanks so much for this and all the others you do!

Thanks, Mike! Yeah, Ed's phrasing was just too good. The way he would bend up with his index finger and give it vibrato... nobody else was doing that. Great stuff. :)

Used to know this one years ago (approx. '88/'89). Back in those days... it was rewind play... rewind play... rewind play... to try and interpret what was going on. A lot of trial and error and searching around for the right combinations to make my versions of Eddie's expressions sound accurate. Love that you do these! Gives me that accurate reference to access when I decide to tackle new ones or re-learn ones I used to know. Thanks man! Keep em coming

Thanks bro, and yeah kids don't know how easy they have it these days. Back in the 80s, we were lucky to find tabs (or other products like videos, which we would have had to purchase), and of course they are never 100% accurate... especially when it's something like Eddie's solos. I have the original Van Halen I songbook (I believe it came out in 1989?), and it was the "official" songbook, translated by Wolf Marshall - you probably remember that name. It had quite a few errors LOL. Anyway, thanks again! :)

The flames in the background of the solo play though are me burning my guitars after watching you flawlessly execute that solo. I LOVE that solo and you as always just nailed it...whoops...it's time for me to throw another guitar log on the fire :)

Check out 1977 Gene Simmons demo ft. Eddie and Alex Tunnel of Love. There is a part in there that brought me here because it sounds so much like this solo. Also, I do here in that solo from the demo some Eric Clapton from Cream, I just can't place the song, but you'll know it when you hear it. Thanks for the breakdown of all theses great solos!

Very nice! Agree with you that the bluesy phrasing evh got from Clapton separates him from his clones who just copied the speed and tricks, without the feel. The drums on this tune are great also. Sounds like he may have subtly used the whammy bar on a couple parts in this solo, but could just be left hand vibrato

eddie was one CRAFTY player expert phrasing WHAT A FEEL guitar player ,,,you just can't get better ,,,, a quick note to mention wolfie ,,, the kid should give it up,,, ,,,,people, listen to and pay attention to the guitar work . a song called " in a simple rhyme " its the last song on women and children first ,, the guitar work , and also the VOCALS and Lyrics ,,,, are on a totally different intelligence and creativity level that sammy can only fantasize about,,, ,, and one more on fair warning zone in on a track called " hear about it later " ,,,,,,,van halen vs van hagar ,,, Hagar? NO THANKS ,,,,, eddie what a clever perplexing guitar playing " Wizard " ESPECIALLY his rhythm which was brilliant ,,, and for roth to sing on top of these intricate songs wildly constructed was incredible in itself ,,,, and i wont forget to mention anthony's ON THE MONEY VOCAL HARMONIES, ,,, and alex hammering away ,,,,,,,,,,
