This is the story of our first video camera, it was black and white, and not very portable. Then we upgraded to a full-fledged color camcorder and it was the best thing ever! It all began in 1984.

It's fake and scripted. They found 2 random 13 year olds and hired them as actors, filmed them, then used filters to make it seem like it's filmed in the 80s. This was all shot in the 2010s. Idk, that's what my mind tells me... 🤐

Wow I can't stop watching this channel since I stumbled onto it over the past month. I'm so glad that you guys were able to capture all of these memories from the 80's. As an 80's kid, I started re-collecting all of the old video games from my childhood over the past 15 years or so in order to re-live some nostalgic moments from my childhood, but having these actual memories captured on video is priceless. I remember my parents getting a VHS camera back in the 90's, but we barely used it to capture these kinds of things. Of course nowadays everyone has cameras and video on their smartphones, and I've been trying to intentionally utilize the technology to preserve my kids' childhood experiences so they can have a collection of memories like you guys did. Thanks you guys for all of the quality uploads and great memories!

You guys are amazing! Can’t say it enough. I can’t believe people thought these were fake! My daddy bought one of the gigantic camcorders back in 88, when I was 10, I believe. It used regular VHS tapes, and my mom always made jokes about carrying a TV on her shoulder and the muscles she made from it. We have so much footage of skating with friends and parties. Last days of school...I need to have it all turned to digital. By the way, that camcorder STILL works. I went on to work in the film industry, primarily independent films.

@Eric & Darrell I used to help with production, makeup, and wardrobe. I did some work for Screen Gems in N.C., then moved to New York City and started editing. I haven’t been on a film set in almost 10 years, now. I started my own business as a makeup artist, piggybacking off of the recommendations I received by some cool actors/friends. (Think Oceans 11, 12, and 13) It was fun while it lasted, but I wanted to settle down and live a more low key lifestyle. It was so overwhelming and I disliked where I was headed. Sometimes things get too big, too fast, and I had to make the decision to back out. I’m definitely not opposed to doing more projects, but only for the art of it. You have done some things, as well! I am so inspired by your minds, and think you are absolutely wonderful! If you don’t mind, send me in the direction of your work! Every time I view one of your videos, I am filled with inspiration and so much joy. You guys are truly delivering some much needed footage. I swear, it makes me so happy. Great videos, fellows! I am from the same era as you, having been born in 1974. Unfortunately, though, back in my younger days my family never had a video camera, and yet we were perhaps one of the few families that had owned a Super8 film camera which I still have to this day. My introduction to video was a toy Tyco TVC 8000, which, if you’re familiar with it, is very similar to the quality of the security camera hook up that you guys had. A few years ago I did pick up a GE full-size VHS camcorder for free on Kijiji. The battery is shot but the power supply still works fine and the quality is quite good for a VHS camera. Amazing how we’ve gone from all of that to essentially most people having high definition cameras in their pockets. Keep up the good work! Awesome channel. I am not nearly as disciplined with mine. :-)

So, I started drawing storyboards of my imaginary movies. Everyone saw them as "comics" and I was good at it, so I kept doing it😅 Fast forward to 2020's, I'm picking up videography📹

It's fun to pull out all the old tapes, digitise and share them (on DVD or otherwise). I did that some years ago with family footage from 1988-96, shot on a borrowed VHS camcorder and then my own Sony Hi8 bought in 1991 which also did the superimpose trick. I'm from '71. Kids today who like shooting video don't know how lucky they are working in the digital domain in high definition. Cheers guys.

You should totally pick up another one of those cameras and redo one of your old videos as your current selves - with the original camera quality.

Into the 2000’s who remembers Sony coming out with a digital camera that used 3.5 floppies and then later a DVD 📀 for storing video called the Sony Mavica?
@TortureBot

I remember some brand that recorded on floppies and DVD's, not sure which. In the late 80's, there was actually a cheap kid's video camera that recorded on CASSETTE! Only in black and white I think. A friend of mine had it. I think Roger Ebert actually reviewed the thing on TV.

I was born in 1997 but I just watched the Metalhead Kids in a record store video, after it being in my recommended for a while.. And I'm glad I finally watched it. It's cool seeing what the world was like before my time. That was more like what my parent's would've seen growing up. Sometimes I wish I was born in 1990 because that would mean that I actually had a childhood in the 90's... 1997 is a weird year to be born, it was right on the brink of the 2000s, so I wasn't really a kid in the 90s (but I kind of was..) The world and society just seemed much simpler and kinder back then. Hopefully we'll reach a point where it goes back to being like that.

It looked very normal for 1989 to me. I'm so glad yall kept those and some how got it on here. LOL! I still follow music but I was never into recorders and stuff. My parents would never buy any. Gosh, I'm still tripping from the flesh back.

Sub'd to you guys! You remind me of my best buddy and myself back in the day as we did the same stuff... Actually, the similarities are uncanny... both metal heads, same ages and randomly filming stuff (we just never kept any of our footage unfortunately).... There's a super nostalgic feel to your videos and I think it's awesome!

Wow, such a fantastic video that wonderfully documents the discovery and evolution of a passion that was spawned literally from the trash heap! I can relate to those quantum leaps in production capability through acquiring key pieces of technology that had their day in the sun but are now all in the same vintage, lost and obsolete basket. You really captured the joy of passing these milestones extremely well and was a pleasure to watch. Such a hard paradigm to explain unless you lived through it yourself. Journeys like this are applicable to any progressive technology but rarely is the story of it captured, documented, and expressed so well in terms that are easy to appreciate. I think the a significant point about your video experience is you all jumped in the small window of time that completely missed film/super 8 as well as any VHS production pipelines but timed it perfectly to pick up the superior video 8 format even if it was still relatively expensive. You could have easily gone down a VHS path with your hobby and as you know now it was terrible quality to start with and got exponentially worse if you ever had to edit it and go down generations. Your enthusiasm may have been at least curbed by this back in the day and I expect the initiative to upload anything that resulted from that period may have never have occurred. I recall my work-flow for years was shooting on video 8, editing down to 'Super' VHS on my Hitachi VT-S890E recorder and adding titles, musical score and any visual and sound effects. The Super VHS became the master to copy down final versions to standard VHS which looked like a first generation recording and that’s about the best you could hope for with the format. Then Mini DV cassettes captured the market and the rest is a revolution of digital technology that changed the space forever. The commentary on the ‘superimpose’ feature is interesting to me given your age. I purchased the same PAL version of the Sony CCD-F70 camera here in Australia. Being in my early twenty's I may have better represented the more typical buyer of the camera and can possibly account for why such a neat feature was discontinued. I would expect anyone interested in video editing was also exploring consumer level genlocks and devices combined with computers to apply titles and effects, all pretty expensive stuff so not available to everyone and definitely not your average school kid. Even though superimpose was an incredibly neat and convenient "in camera" solution it definitely came across as a little clunky (even back then) and flew in the face of all the benefits of doing titles and effects as a post-production process. This was a period where with a bit of experimentation and research you could get professional level results with off the shelf consumer market products. I certainly had a good play with superimpose but I remember the novelty of it disappeared very very quickly and I am guessing this response was more typical and may be why it never was carried on by Sony into the future. Having said that I totally see why your younger demographic that was charged with unbridled enthusiasm and creativity would have embraced and loved it. Considering the Sony CCD-F70 was an analogue system it really was quite a thing to have this digital effect embedded its engineering. It was a beautifully built, feature rich product and the fact you had two or them to play with must have been a perfect storm! My Sony CCD-F70 performed faultlessly for years. As the digital age took over I some how managed to sell it to my brother where it went on to film his young family for another five or six years. Thanks for sharing your time capsules and the story behind them. Hopefully you may inspire more people to dust off similar Video 8 collections and get them uploaded so people who appreciate the hidden treasures they hold can experience them to.
