for anyone who doesn't understand why they're being so careful with their bows, its because each of their bows probably cost around anywhere from $150 - $1000. Probably more, actually, as $300- $800 would be just a cheap student bow.

their bows are probably even more expensive than that... idk if I'm just a "idgaf" guy about the things i bought for myself or something but I bought a cheap e guitar for 150€ (that's the most money I've ever spent on luxury stuff...I don't have a lot of money) and I'm obviously not throwing it around like a weird m o n k e but if i bonk it against my desk or chair and there's a new dent in it I don't really care because...well even tho it's a lot of money for me...this is the lowest end of a playable electric guitar. Now. If this guitar would be 15,000€ (I doubt their bows are THAT much but this is for demonstration as well for a different instrument lol) I'd honestly stand in the middle of my room, away from any kind of bonk-able surface that could dent my guitar and I'd be scared to even scratch the pickguard by accident, even tho...it's there to catch scratches that would otherwhise scratch the actual finish of the guitar

For my 10th birthday I got a turquoise violin from my dad. Later I looked on amazon history and discovered it was around 70 dollars, the same violin they got but a different color. I no longer blamed myself for snapping 3 strings and all the pegs coming out and all the hair on my bow unloosening. I learned that it wasn't my beginner's playing when I practiced on my schools violin and to my surprise, nothing broke. Moral of the story: Violins are expensive for a reason.
@chandrawong449

Buying from a reputable dealer (ie. a real music store or strings shop) is important. When my son started playing, I got him an $80 1/2 size violin (case/bow/rosin included). Granted, this was 12 years ago, but we bought it from the music shop in our small town. They measured my son to order the correct size because the 'orchestra' teacher wanted my son to get a full sized violin so it would be louder. There are many stories about that 'orchestra' and that teacher, but that was an awesome first violin. 12 years later and my son in minoring in music/violin performance, has a composite bow (he picked out) that plays the equivalent to a $1000 wood bow and was gifted a nice violin from a friend who used to be an excellent player through her 20s but sold her $5000 violin because she needed the money. She bought a 'cheap' $400 violin 30 years ago because she felt bad not owning a violin but couldn't play it because the sound quality was so much worse. That 'cheap' violin got him to all-state orchestra in high school and a performing arts scholarship in college.

I had to buy my own strings (about 60$) and it worked perfectly (the bridge wasn’t flat) .. so if a person can’t afford a expensive violin you can buy the first one and buy a set of good strings and make it work.. as a beginner one of course (buy a more expensive one later on when you know you’ll stick to playing)

I am playing and performing on a sprektrum of instruments and I gotta say something for beginners: If you are unsure about wether or not you stick to the instrument. Go and rent a professionally made instrument! They are usually in amazing shape and fixed up to make your journey most pleasant. I did this with my flute when I was a kid, the piano and now with a Cello (I started learning two weeks ago. (Yes, I play 4 instruments^^) If you love the sound of an instrument don't waste money and nerves on poorly made things and if you end up realizing that the particular instrument isn't for you, you can give it back and someone else is being able to learn on it. ;)

I bought a $90.00 violin on Amazon because it was all I could afford and wasn't sure if I'd like violin (I'm 57 and flit from hobby to hobby quite a bit). So far it's a great instrument for me, I learned how to tune it, even changed a string to make sure I knew how to do it just in case. It came with a decent bow and rosin, a neck rest and extra strings. I'm getting some wonderful sounds out of it and think it was a great deal and will last me years. 🎻

@@user-mh7ws5zg1j in all honesty man as a complete beginner it will be fine, you can practice technique and get a feel for holding the instrument and bow, and the tone isn’t good but at least you can get sound out of it. Just enjoy it for what it is, if your family can’t afford a good violin then you can take music class through school and play violin, you will get a loan violin that you can keep and play. Point is if you really want to play violin and love the instrument you will make use of this violin.

I learned the absolute basics on a $30 violin. It's full size and playable and not being sold anymore. It might be the same as your $60 violin, actually. I had to put the bridge in myself, no lines for the strings... It sounds terrible but it was perfect for me to see if I'd actually practice. After a few months I bought a $400 violin. I'm not good at all but the difference was obvious immediately.

Let me tell you my funny story! I never played violin. I play guitar, mandolin and piano. When my granpa passed away, he gave me his violin. I did not play for a year. When i finally decided to play, it was out of tune. I watched a vid on youtube to get the right note and the fricking bridge flew right across the room! I cried 3 night straight! Thinking I had broken a violin who was passed on for 6 generations! Saved over a 1000$ to get it repaired and the artisan(yes he builds violin as a passion & knows everything about wood based instruments) He laughed so hard at me and explained that it was not glued on the violin lolll He fixed it without charging me and showed me how to tune it🤦 I took that money and bought myself a cheap violin to start practicing! Im never touching that violin again until i 100% know how to play😂

My school usually lets you rent them out for orchestra and eventually after playing for awhile you pay it off and it’s yours. They don’t make you restart the rental if you need to upgrade to a larger size though. I mean when I ended up switching to a double bass (which was deftinetly an adjustment) because the school orchestra had barely anybody playing it then we had to redo a rental for that one but that’s also an entirely different instrument

the fact that it costs $50,000 for a "professional" violin is just so sad ... so many talented people would never be able to afford one. I think this is also part of the reason why the classical music scene is filled with mostly upper class people. I'm not criticizing people for having money, but damn, I know it does not cost even close to $50,000 to produce a violin lol. Just seems over the top in terms of pricing. I'm a professional guitarist and the cost of each of my guitars varies from $800 - $2500. $2500 would be considered a "professional build", but in actually the additional cost is mostly for the prestige (e.g. the headstock logo showing up as "Gibson Les Paul" vs a "Gibson Les Paul Studio").
@grey7685
@grey7685 3 жыл бұрын
Violin making is incredibly difficult, and there are loads of factors that come into pricing. It also takes years to make them, I see it as a pretty equal price match, but it still really sucks that thry arent widely available for cheap. Ik there are some carbon violins out there though, there are a lot of luthiers trying to figure out how to produce a carbon violin with an authentic sound so people can afford one that's cheap and durable!

I'm a guitarist as well, but guitar and violin are built different. Reason even the technique in making violin took years to learn and even a good luthier wouldn't even be able to make violin as close to what it was in the past, such as Stradivarius, etc. For a classical guitar a basic mass produced Yamaha would work well and sounds good, I started with a $80 Yamaha Guitar as a starter, which for a violin the same price probably would not be as satisfactory. Each piece in the violin, are supposed to be handmade and really made to detail. A mass produced violin won't sound the same, reason why their price is soooo high.

To be fair. Watercolor is more about skill than the material. I've seen people make good art with their coffee or blood lmao. Of course, preservations is where it gets expensive. More expensive materials just last longer. Value also rise up with expensive materials. This is a different though. Can't get good with a cheap violin if it's unplayable. I've seen pros try to play with a cheap violins and made it playable, but only because they immediately know what's wrong with it and how to adjust to it.

I just signed up for violin lessons (I’m having my first one this week) and I’m renting a good Eastman violin that costs $1300. My advice for anyone starting out on the violin: Rent a violin from a reputable music store instead of buying one online.

Anjali a violin that cheap might have problems that will affect your playing, or anyone’s for that matter simply because they might not be built right. The best thing you can do would be to go to the nearest music store and see the cheapest violins that they have and confirm that they’re not total garbage, but that might not be possible right now for obvious reasons. I don’t mean to discourage you, but it would suck if someone stopped playing because their instrument was crap.

I just bought a box of old violins for $10 each. people were laughing when I bought them.The 3/4 size "stradivarius" copy was an easy fix with new strings, used pegs and a small part to glue for way under $100 USD. Yay me. Now, where's the case? Nooooooo.
