Here's the way I ended up weathering the plastic truck rims for the 1/14 scale White Freightliner build.
Just one of them moments waiting for paint to dry and having an idea to try out an experiment. I like to try out something different in every build I do, it's a good way to learn how to (or not to) improve your technique.
I wanted to bang this video out as a tips & tricks thing. Hopefully it helps someone out. If you got a dirty workshop floor like me it works great. If you are curious about the antiquing rust paint, check out Olive RC or RC Everyday, they both use this paint and have shown how to use it to great effect.

Thanks for the info brother. Best tutorial I have seen. I never thought of myself of enjoying drama like a middle school girl, but I loved it.

Thanks Steve! Glad you enjoyed it, I was getting a little bored with making the standard videos, felt like trying something else for a change.

As you know I'm always trying to avoid rusted bits & always striving for perfection but, I've gotten into tugs & ships again & gave some of your technique from previous tips you've shared. Really worked great and authentic which is the goal yeah. Might be giving this a go as well in the near future & wanted to say thanks again for sharing your experience & knowledge, appreciate it Brother. Give the kids rubs from me yeah, all the best!!

Thanks Twist! I don't often have to make plastic look rusty, preferring to use metal, it does it all for me. The 1/14 semi steel wheels are beautiful things, but a tad out of my price range. If YT paid better for effort put into videos I'd have more for the hobby.

@@OldIronRC I hear you Brother, I keep thinking the same about Vet's pensions here. But I guess it makes us more creative in finding ways to make things work , I need that these days as much as money, keeps my mind in better places. You do great work Marc!

Aha! So that´s how you di d it! I´ve never heard of anyone doing it this way before - and it looks great, not just the heavily rusted one, but all of them. I love your dramatic reconstruction technique! Like you, I was shocked by the price of the "proper" rust paints - the Modern Masters one costs 440 in the US and nearly 140 pounds in Britain. I filled a peanut butter jar with wire wool and white vinegar. it did take a few months for the wire wol to turn to rust, but it covers the item I´m weathering very well, though it wears off easily if not coated with clear matt laquer. Thanks for sharing this tip - I´m keen to try it out.

It worked out better than I thought it would. I brought the rust paints back when I was making the Rust Never Sleeps rat rod to paint the controller, but it never happened.

I'm wondering if the black metalic sands that I have left over from gold panning would make a substitute for the metal filings?

hmmmm, not sure. We call that black sand "iron sand" here, so maybe?
