Fun With Calisthenics

The Muscle-Up is the calisthenics skill, that every body weight fitness enthusiast or athlete wants to get. The pull-up and the Muscle Up have been my focus, and I have neglected to develop my dips as far as I could have done. In this video, I’ll be introducing you to weighted dips, and attempting my one rep max.
I’m in the process of making or buying a dip station that will take my weight and the additional weight I’ll be adding. This will be featured in a future video.
I will reply to every comment, so please let me know how you get on and if you find this video useful. I have tried to keep it simple.

Absolutely solid. The instability from the rings add another dimension to dips.

Dips, as I recently found out, are killer at 60 years of age! Way to go Antony! Yes, I'm trying to incorporate them in my routine now. I just found an outdoor gym behind a local school that has a whole bunch of workout stations and a dip station is one of them. Carry on... Cheers, John

Sometimes I go to PureGym, which is huge with so much equipment. But only one thing that you can do dips on. Shame really.

Dips are easier than pull ups. I still struggle in pull ups so your focus on pull-ups was the correct decision.

Yes, I do agree with that. I just wish I had done more dips over the years. But… never mind, I’ve just brought a really cool dip station, so going to make up for it now.

Great job Anthony! Rings are definitely more challenging than a dip bar especially with weights. Have you ever tried Australian pull-ups and push-ups on the rings?

Nice one but tbh you have the ultimate work station called rings. I wouldn't waste money on a dip station, not good for your shoulders, working one plane ie. up and down. Whilst the rings is the king. Turn outs, archers,Bulgarian etc different dips equal more strength power muscles. The thing I would recommend for you is a weighted vest whilst doing your work out. Good luck.

I’ve been doing these in my back garden cos I’ve got the same setup as you. I try to turn the rings out at the top of each rep. Supinate the wrists and hold at lockout. Once I get up to 8-10 reps with perfect, slow, clean form, then maybe I’ll add weight. I don’t mind adding weight to dip bars cos it’s stable. I weight 86kg and use 25kg of extra weight for sets of 6, with full range of motion. None of this 90 degrees wimpy stuff. I don’t find it necessary at this point to add weight when using rings. Technique would start to break down, shoulders turn in, range of motion decreases etc. All the in the name of chasing meaningless numbers. There’s still way more strength and stability to be gained without the need for adding weight just yet

That’s a great comment. I was adding weight on the rings for dips, as I didn’t have a regular dip bar. But I do now!

You need to factor in ring difficulty. You could most probably add 40% to this weight for bar dips

@@funwithcalisthenics I’m going to cement 150mm/150mm treated pine posts into my back yard and put a high bar plus parallel bars for dips. I’ll put the bar high enough so I can also use rings on it if I choose.
