Wet Shellac Burn using My Own Pigmented Shellac

This wet shellac burn was super fun to create, but I'm a bit embarrassed to post it because I was too excited to think about safety until I was done. Don't do that! Safety is so important, especially for wet shellac burns because you're working with an open flame. What precautions do you take to make sure your encaustic burns are safe?

I love the cellular effect wet shellac creates. It is a fun process and is addictive. I liked the simplicity of the piece.

Beautiful! I'm so glad you posted this. Will give it a whirl! Ordered pigment powders from Jackson's Art UK and they're on the way. I don't know if anyone knows much about aniline dyes but I have powdered aniline dyes so was going to see how that worked in the meantime. Any info appreciated.

I love watching this. I am new to encaustic and have yet to try a shellac burn - it is a beautiful effect, so organic and unplanned. You chat and instructions are really clear and helpful and your camera work is great. Thank you! I am off to watch How to mix Shellac

Yes, I added three layers of wax before I started recording. Most of my videos start that way, but maybe I should show more of the painting and fusing those first layers? I just don't want any videos to get too repetitious.

Shellac burns are always intriguing with unique results. Thanks for doing a video on your version. However, redoing it with the proper safety precautions would have been better than showing something you even stated you were embarrassed about.. Burning such toxic materials can be so very dangerous. Not everyone is going to listen to your voiceover or understand it if they are language challenged.. Visuals are pretty powerful.

Awesome! If you lay down wax over the fresh burned shellac, does the gumminess of it not being dried mess up the wax? Does the shellac seal in the shellac, preventing it from drying? Thanks!

The stickiness of the shellac makes it hard to brush wax on top of it. To do that, I need to wait for it to dry.

Also, if you paint over wet shellac, it never really fully dries/cures with the rest of your painting. You need to wait for the shellac to dry before painting over it.

loved the video, but am not sure when to spray the shellac, Did you spray the white underbase before you put color on?

I didn't spray shellac in this video. The color I added is pigmented shellac on top of white encaustic wax. When I spray shellac it's always outside, after I've added some color with India or alcohol inks. I'll go back and listen, I may have said something confusing I need to clarify...

Was the white encaustic paint and what were you using with the pen? Was it all wet?

Yes, the white is encaustic wax. I think the pen you mention is my heat gun- I'm using it to melt and fuse the layers of wax together.

I have not... sounds interesting, though I'd be afraid I'd actually set the canvas on fire.

In the video you are not showing that you are leaving time to dry during layers but mention in your reply to comments that each layer of shellac needs time to dry before painting a later of encaustic white on top. Can you be a little more explicit while you are working and tell us exactly as you go along. Thx much
