To be honest, the only person that was actually doing the right thing in this movie was the drunk guy that was getting clowned on. He saved a kid from getting ran over (he gets criticized), he gave a kid some money to get something from the store *sorta* (criticized). @@beautyandtheoffbeats that's what I'm saying. Instead of being grateful that her son wasn't hurt as he could have been, she ends up whooping him anyway. You got parents like that too, because in her eyes, her son wasn't supposed to be in the street anyway, so he gets punished

TBH, I kinda have to agree with Sal's point on not having any black people on HIS wall. It kinda seems like a dumb thing to have conflict based around, but it is what it is.
@mywhychromosome
@mywhychromosome 2 ай бұрын
@@jrt2792I could be totally wrong about this, knowing how Spike is (or how he became later), but I always thought the point was kind of that, to varying degrees, each of the groups has a ‘valid’ point and position that could be defended, but that they get overpowered by rage and frustration in such a way that their blinders come down, they cease being able to see any other points of view, and the situation becomes a powder keg. To use your example, Sal could certainly decorate ‘his’ place however the he wants-but Buggin’ Out does have a point when he points out that almost all the money that supports the place comes from blacks. It’s just his response to that that’s over the top

I lived in Brooklyn when this film opened and Spike Lee was in the Times Square theater with us. He stood outside and greeted people as they left. Brooklyn was very much like what was portrayed in the film. Back then the community was still tense about the murder of Yusef Hawkins whose death was the third killing of a black male by white mobs in New York City during the 1980s. And it was a hot summer, too.

Radio Raheem and Mookie seem to be the opposites of sorts. Raido Raheem was spreading the message about love and hate and how the dynamics work against each other both while also exhibiting minor traits of a thinker or person giving words of wisdom. Mookie was the lazy dead beat father that was just barely surviving. The old wino got no respect although he was trying to do his best. The movie demonstrated different types of archtypes and no one group or people behavior or act the same. Sal was a good example of that with his sons. Sal wanted peace and Pino wanted to leave. Bad kids, no one listening to elders, racial stereotypes, welcome to America.
@eileenmaher2101
@eileenmaher2101 8 ай бұрын
Radio Raheem's character and circumstance surrounding his characters death are based on the actual real murder of Michael Stewart at the hands of the NYPD. Michael was hog tied and choked by the police at the 1st Avenue L train stop after a night of hanging out at The Pyramid Club. The police claim he was detained because they caught him spray painting/tagging in the station. The police were never held accountable. Michael languished on life support in the hospital for 2 weeks. His murder was the catalyst for the beyond amazing Jean Michele Basquiat painting Untitled/Defacement and also the Keith Haring work USA for Africa. 40 years on and..... not much has changed. Sad will never even come close to describing all of that unnecessary racism and chaos.

Spike makes a masterpiece and then gets mad that people discuss it / make theories about it so for the rest of his career he makes movies where the message comes out loud and clear, often (but not always) to the detriment of the story. One of the things I love and hate about him as a writer. Fun to include the theory, say you like it, then put his response at the end. I think discussion of the film makes it more interesting, not less, and I don’t get why Spike feels the need to pass judgement on it. Great vid.

Mookie throwing the garbage can was him choosing a side. After the death of Radio Raheem, Mookie was standing on the side of Sal, his money getting paid. Bugging Out tried talking to him about why there weren't any black people on the wall. He told him to leave because he didn't want to lose his job, again standing with Sal. I actually finally watched this a few years back and one thing I liked about the movie is the randomness of the movie. It’s reminiscent of an intermingled yet segregated neighborhood who are essentially forced to live here by poverty. But Spike Lee really shows his niche in world building with this movie as if it were a day out of many. I really liked that. The people groups still have their opinions but occasionally find their harmony in common things like food and sex. All in all, this neighborhood doesn’t really seek to “do the right thing” but acting out of each of their own grievances. Perhaps the title is more of a statement and an call to action than a description of the movie’s contents.

I legit knew folks like this growing up in the late 80's early 90's, Hell the old winos I used to see when I was in my 30's sitting around this apartment complex my sister lived at. Just some old middle-aged dudes sitting around outside all day hanging out, got lawn chairs out, and sat down. Giancarlo was extra in every Spike Lee movie he was in back then, remember School Daze? He was extra as hell in that movie too

Bro this has to be one of the best reaction videos I’ve ever seen. I was in high school when *”Do The Right Thing”* came out and I saw it at the movies with my date. One of the best nights of my childhood, borrowed my dad car to go see this movie. And no, not everyone in the late 80’s danced really hard lol 😂. Well I didn’t dance really hard, but my high school girlfriend did. She broke her foot dancing hard lol 😂. Everyone was trying to rock those Jordan 4’s as well because Spike Lee and Michael Jordan had the commercial together, my high school girlfriend brought me and her a matching pair because I couldn’t afford it at the time. Now I’m able to afford a pair and now I have several pairs of J 4’s and I’m talking about the real retro ones too with *”Nike Air”* on the back not with the *”Jumpman”* on the back because that’s not original design. But man you brought back some good memories bro good job 👏🏾
