So, in the last several months, I've FINALLY gotten around to watching Steven Universe for the first time, and I have to say, I kinda regret having waited so long to do so. In spite of its flaws and shortcomings (some of which could fairly be blamed on corporate meddling by Cartoon Network, I'm sure), it's an incredible piece of media that has some AMAZING music, well-written and layered characters, and some great action scenes, not to mention it's one of those shows that makes an honest attempt to tackle some mature subjects.
Anyway, given that it's Pride Month, and this show has become one of those quintessential pieces of queer media (which, as a nonbinary bisexual person myself, I'm always looking for more of), so now's as good a time as any to bring Steven Universe into the "What If...?" series!
So, gather up your space rock friends and order some square pizza, as I tell you what I think it'd be like if Steven Universe characters were Pokémon Trainers!

Hey, everybody, welcome to this new video putting together Pokemon teams for some of the characters from Steven Universe! LIke I said in the intro, this show has become one of my new favorites, so I've been meaning to do this "What If...?" for a good bit now. Hopefully you like it! (Also sorry that I got this up a few hours later than intended, I maaaay have overslept, haha) I'm hoping to get another video going somewhere in the next couple of weeks to start off the month of July, but we'll see how that goes. I'll keep everybody posted over on Twitter, as per usual, but I've definitely got some ideas as to what that'll be. Hope you've all had a lovely June, and Happy Pride Month to my fellow gaymers! Hear me out! The Steven universe universe already has "pokemons" in the form of corrupted forms. What if in an alternate timeline, they are treating those gems like pokemon because it can't be healed. I mean like you saw how jasper "evolved" when fighting smoky.... Spinel?? Changing form by herself????...AND centipedle??? They can grow and evolve!...and a humanoid form would make more sense too... It fits so perfectly, you can get the gems when you want to tame. Bubbling is like a pokeball right, where you'll need a lot more energy(mana) to make stronger bubbles. The logic fits so perfectly compared to pokemon!! You won't need to break your mind to understand how a physical material organism was technologically uploaded like a pdf and stored into a ball. Lol The plot would be like .....a corrupting light from an unknown source shined on a colony distant from earth. Every gem was corrupted and returned into their gems. All gems where harvested and stored in the alien spaceship. While the spaceship was flying yellow diamond caught up with her army to confront the aliens. The spaceship that has all the gems was destroyed and crashed into the ocean in the earth. After yellow diamond defeated the aliens she wanted to help the gems because it would be a waste. But she couldn't. She lives all the corrupted gems in Earth. It's your job to find a cure. In your journey you will bond with the corrupted gems and they will help you in your journey. You need to help them regain their true self.

I think medicham would be a good fit for garnet given it’s a como of a fighter and a psychic and it’s good at punching. Not to mention garnet has shown to prioritize meditation and keeping a calm mind to keep herself together

One Pokemon that could work as an extra for Steven would be Skeledirge, given that it soothes aggression with its songs (Funnily enough, this series is what inspired the nickname for my own Skeledirge, Chille & Tid, Tid being the fire bird). For a second go around, Connie, Greg, Lapis, and Peridot come to mind. It still tickles me how this show was the first time I ever heard Sarah Stiles, only for her to crop up years later with a very similar voice in my latest hyperfixation (I am absolute Hazbin trash, with an all consuming crush on "the big boss of hell himself". Someone help me)

Yay, you got it up during Pride Month! Steven Universe has been in my TV backlog practically since it premiered (and especially after I found all the "Stronger than You" covers and parodies; I even wrote one for my own fantasy series). I'd been moving it up the priority list since you started watching it, and this just pushed it up even higher. Also, I love the use of the Undertale Ruins music for Pearl's team segment; very fitting choice.

I always like when people notice the deliberate music choices during these character segments when I do a "What If...?", and for this one, I really tried to stick with themes with instruments that each character is actually directly associated with in SU itself. And obviously with Pearl, it not only fit to use the Ruins theme because of the piano, but also because Toriel is kind of the same role for the MC in Undertale as Pearl is for Steven, a mother-like mentor (though I'm sure you, of all people, had already caught that, haha).

I feel like steven should get diance in his team, because it is royalty and has pink diamonds in its body and also produces them, also in diance's movie she goes out of her kingdom to fix an issue and after a journey with the Protagonists (ash and friends) , she fixes the issue, although the similary is very loose to rose's story i think it still valid, considering both left their kingdoms/empires and later cameback to fix it. Must i must admit, she is way more fitting to be in a pink diamond/rose pokemon team than in stevens, like how pink compressed dirt into fake gem shards simillar to diance producing diamonds out of carbon in the atmosphere, with of them using their hands to do so. Edit:i know steven fixed the gem empire issues and not rose but its Technically the same gem though not the same person.

@@SuperNerdDaniel There were like, 2 things in that video I agreed with to be fair. Lapis was pretty mishandled and was probably made way more of an abuser than was probably intended. And that it seemed like the show went out of it’s way to hate Jasper because Steven didn’t like Jasper. But that’s all I’d agree with, the rest was just, pretty damn offensive and just plain cruel. Like bruh, the projection was real.

Okay hear me out, but Gothitelle would be a wonderful pick for Garnet. Gothitelle has a solemn and calm demeanor, just like Garnet. Gothitelle's ability to foresee the end of time would be a fitting nod to not just Garnet's future vision, but also how revealing her visions to other people, like Steven, can be incredibly helpful or depressing if a future is deemed inevitable (thinking about the Mr. Frowney episode, even though it has a somewhat happy ending). Idk, Gothitelle has Garnet vibes.

Steven could also have a Cubone because of literally bearing a part of their deceased mothers and a Blissey because of the pink healer with a remarkable item on the belly. Spinel could also have a Beheeyem. I imagine might use this alien Pokémon to erase the memories of others. If I were to give them specific pokémon (not a species, but the individual pokémon, a character that is a pokémon) I kinda think... [anipoké spoilers ahead] Amethyst deserved to meet Mewtwo. Both of them embody Purple "I've never asked to be made" (and artificially with problems to others) trauma. Spinel deserved to meet Ash's Gengar. He was also fooled by his old owner (who has pink hair and told it to stand still to get rid of it)

I had a fun idea for Garnet which delves into a personal theory I have, that being replace the Failinks with a Kyurem, because I believe that there might've been 4 dragons that formed the original dragon instead of 3, with Kyurem being a fusion of 2 dragons with Zekrom and Reshiram being separate

@@SuperNerdDaniel Well, from what I believe it's the only pokemon that can fuse with the other 2 dragons It also has a weird type combo of dragon and ice, the first before Baxcalibur was introduced. And it's stats are weirdly balanced being both a attacker and special attacker.

if i may make a suggestion, mayhaps florges would be an apt pokemon for steven to have since they basically have flowers merge with their bodies as endosymbionts upon evolution. as for other characters, I really want jasper to get some more limelight after the future finale. my first thought would to be to give her an infernape to parallel her team with garnets emboar (both are chinese fire-fighting starters), as well as an annihilape since i imagine she would appreciate the ability to come back from the dead via willpower alone. also, maybe a lucario who's trying to keep her in check by making sure her aura reads as the minimal amount of angry possible. for a 4th pokemon, i would suggest flamigo, with the reason being either jasper was drawn to a flamingo's ability to persist in environs hostile to even gems (seriously look it up) or their ability to coordinate themselves reminding her of the tactical acumen of both sides during the rebellion real quick lightning round for others.... connie would have a kingambit because she's both a swordwoman, a bit of nerd, and has some political ambitions peridot would have an orbeetle cuz of holllywood aliens and the peri-drones, as well as being a sort of analyst for the crystal gems (she would totally use her drones to extend this guys reach) lapis would have either a lunatone or a clefairy, though might scoff at having a water-type (maybe gyarados since they coulld both relate to being helpless at one point?) finally, bismuth would have a conkledurr, enough said.

@@SuperNerdDaniel They're alright. Of the three main ones Save the Light is without a doubt the best, but also the buggiest. Hessonite's a real fun addition to the lore and Unleash the Light gives a quick look at what kinds of things the Gems did between the original show and Future.

*long comment* There was so many things wouldve done for my take on this video: Include Connie: Galarian Farfetch'd (impressionable yet committed knight with a longsword), Kricketune (she plays violin), Roserade (an elegant foe that isnt to be underestimated), and Manaphy (a playful femme Pokemon. Also she was trapped underwater with Steven like how Ash literally drowned in the Pokemon Ranger movie) Pearl: Virizion??? Like HELLO!? The pokemon is agile, sharp, and hates humans just like Pearl, Minccino (it's a clean freak), and Primarina/Milotic for their voice, affinity for the ocean, and grace Garnet: Id give her access to Metang (it's two Beldums put together), maybe Umbreon and Espeon as well Pink Diamond/Rose: Diancie (self explanatory), Sliggoo (anyone who gets too close... might just... get hurt...), Altaria (Rose's room also her floating powers), and Happiny (just a baby who wants more than its mature enough to have. Also Chansey is a healer) If we want to tie in groups together, I'd give the crystal gems the lake trios based off something they exceed in yet still have insecurities about: Garnet gets Azelf for her willpower and courage, even when she freezes from the stress of being the new leader (the climaxes in The Test, Pool Hopping, and Mindful Education). Amethyst gets Mesprit for her unapologetic emotions, however they sometimes lead to her being careless and self-destrsuctive (Reformed and On The Run). And Pearl gets Uxie for her extensive catalog of knowledge, except for when someone knows something she doesnt (Rose's Scabbard and Back To The Barn)

One idea I have in mind for your next ‘what if (blank) characters were Pokémon trainers?’ Is the 2019 series for Carmen Santiago. I even have a couple of ideas. Carmen would get a unovan zoroark to represent her being a thief, I mean it makes sense since zoroark have the ability to disguise themselves and trick their prey. She would also have a dragapult, since it’s called the stealth Pokémon and is capable of turning invisible according to its Pokédex entry. Then I would give her a gengar, as a representation of her childish pranks back when she was on vile island. And I would give her a fossil Pokémon of your choosing, as she honors the past and wishes to keep its links from falling into vile’s hands. Shadosaun, while I haven’t gotten much, would get a unovan Samuwott, as they are all about honor and their traditional samurai design fit with shadosaun’s heritage. I also gave him a lucario, for similar reasons. Zack and ivy get plusel and minum as they are often used to help other Pokémon, and being Carmen’s crew are more than welcome help. They would also get dittos as they are often in disguise. Hopefully these ideas help

This is such a good list and tbh kind of funny and cool that Spinel got a spot on the list and not connie. I love Spinel and find it awesome that she got given a pokemon team. But it's also interesting to think about in regards to pokemon because Lion doesn't particularly listen to Steven often and we could probably say that for the majority of the show that Steven doesn't have the right amount of badges required to order Lion/solgaleo around whereas Connie does have the badges required to (Because Lion does listen to her and even left with her when he came back from space). Idk who would possibly go on Connies team, I'd say definitely a Gallade for her but the other slots I'm not too sure besides also including Solgaleo with her team. Greg wouldn't have a team though and would probably have a 'pet' pokemon. He seems to give off dog owner vibes so I think he'd suit maybe a rockruff. Though at the same time I feel like he'd have a bird because of the music thing so probably a chatot as well.

Oh I wish. But there's still nowhere near female convenient as Monster Girl canon series. I'll start with Monster Musume 1st. And like you said........ SPOILER ALERT!!! Miia is a 1st red Lamia that is easier to start. So being snake-like that is vulnerable to cold environments, it'll obviously be Serperior. Scrafty's also a good example with her shedding skin. A Shiny Gyarados is too obvious for her anger against male creeps and other Monster Girls. Lastly, there is no way her ace isn't a Garbodor. Since her cooking skill running-gag is just poisonous. Centorea Shianus is one of those centaurs who will take this seriously and very skilled at weaponry. So her best options are Decidueye, Aegislash, Rapidash, and Paldean Tauros (Combat Breed) All Harpies are pure and cheerful on their child-like appearance. And Papi is no exception. As such, her flying examples are Cramorant, Yanmega, Gliscor, and Talonflame Now Suu on the jelly hand, this adorable slime girl has poke-pals that can absorb water and immune to poison. Such as Goodra, Clodsire, and a gargantuan Alpha Snorlax! Oh, and there's also Beheeyem to reflect Suu's mind-reading and voice-mimicry skills Meroune Lorelei is one fishy individual to deal with. Even though she's skills really reflects both Primarina, Slowbro, Milotic, and Lapras Rachnera Arachnera is one of those individuals that does make fans not having an arachnophobia for many years. So her 4 partners are Ariados, Galvantula, Araquanid, and Spidops Lala is likely a death's commissioner. That being said, her reaping Pokemons are Dusknoir and Ceruledge. Plus, like Steven Universe's Spinel, Lala also has Scyther and Blacephalon just to be justified as a mixture between a Grim Reaper and a stereotypical Dullahan And don't worry, when the time is right, I'll get to Monster Girl Doctor as part 2

If you do a second su video you need to give lapis a Lugia because: They’re both op They both have spent a lot of time at the bottom of the ocean They both have wings and can fly They both are heavily associated with water They both have wings that look like hands Both have a name beginning with l Swanna and gyarados too because “Lapis Lazulis are partial to water and flying”

Hi! This was in my recommendations! Also how could you NOT put in a Shiny Diancie in Steven's team to represent Pink Diamond mainly because it's a rare gem Pokémon who's also a princess. and also NOT put in Roserade to represent Rose Quartz because well roses?!

@@AbsurdToastling I considered it, but I figured Steven probably wouldn't be super comfortable having a Pokémon that so directly reminds him of Rose's true nature of being Pink Diamond (and everyone insisting that he's her), especially since 90% of Future is him flat-out denying that part of himself despite it literally exploding out of him

I’m going to be honest whenever I see these videos that base the pokémon a character should have based on the themes and role of the character I feel like it’s ignoring what pokémon is about: friendship. Why not look at *who* the characters are instead of *what* the characters are? For example Pearl She’s anxious, motherly, tidy, a sword enthusiast and a capable engineer. What pokémon is she therefore most likely to befriend? 1. Female indeedee remains the same but more because it would be able to sense how she’s feeling and know what to do to make things less stressful for Pearl. 2. Audino is my second pick as a capable healing and nurse pokémon as well as caretaking it would most likely return any favour she made to it. 3. Ralts(or Kirlia)\Gallade is my third pick because one of them would be able to sense the kind of person Pearl is(Kirlia could be more likely due to being older and not as easily overwhelmed by other’s emotions) and maybe knowing the kind of person she is a male would join her because it wants to train with her when it evolves into a Gallade. 4. The Tinkaton line I mean come on it’s obvious she’s help one with building it’s hammer and then it would never leave her. 5. Krikitot/Krikitune she’d help it get better at making music and much like like the previous Tinkatink it would latch on and never leave Spinele 1. Deoxys seeing as she started out in space feeling abandoned the only one out there to meet her would probably be a deoxys. I would imagine encountering another lonely being out there might change her mind about perpetuating her pain onto others heck she might not even go to earth. In this scenario the movie could have a chance of never happening due to her just having someone to talk to. Amethyst 1. Zorua(Unovan) I imagine Amethyst would feel like a kindred spirit to one of these guys especially with how their kind got treated in the past as threats and trouble makers. 2. Audino due to their caring nature one of these would definitely go out of it’s way to try and help Amethyst since it would be able to sense her emotions through it’s feelers. 3. Riolu/Lucario to be honest boisterousness is something a lot of fighting types like plus with them being Gems I imagine their auras would be interesting enough to catch the attention of either stage of this family. 4. Eevee/Espeon/Umbreon Amethyst is a lot more caring than she let’s on at first if she found an Eevee she would definitely help it and only time would tell if it’s love for her would bring it to evolve during the day or night. Garnet could have any number of fighting types and Steven could probably befriend any pokémon. Again think about who the characters are not what as in their world pokémon are living creatures with their own personalities, morals, wants and needs. The personality of the person you’re making a team for should be what you prioritise not what they’re visually known for. Because I know for a fact that Crystal Gems Pearl wouldn’t be able to connect with something like Iron Valiant which is said to be heartless by the pokédex and much like all the other paradox pokémon is highly violent.

give Steven a blissey it’ll be better than a calyrex. Blissey heals and so does Steven he got his healing powers from his mom which had healing tears while Steven has healing spit. GIVE STEVEN A BLISSEY INSTEAD OF A CALYREX!!!
