Fasting is a spiritual practice of self-control found in many religions throughout the ancient world. But what does it mean to Latter-day Saints, and how do they go about practicing it? Let's talk about it.

I fasted for a period of several months. Once a week I did a ~30-36 hour fast, from supper one day to breakfast two days later. It really put things into perspective for me. I felt God gave me a lot of inspiration and wisdom during this time. It made me appreciate what I had even more. It made food taste more delicious. I wasn't adding sugar or salt to things I would have normally and just enjoyed the natural flavour of food more. I also used the money I saved from not eating it and donated it. I wasn't going to a church at the time so just to various charities. Mind you, one of the things that this fasting taught me is that we are to fast from sinfulness. If one is a glutton or something, fasting can help eliminate that. It's also just a good exercise in self-control, hopefully with the help of prayer and God.

At 5:32. Yes you take sacrament while fasting. I had one member when I was sunday school teacher insist he had heard we were breaking the fast by taking the sacrament. I had only been a member a month. Inspiration came upon me. I asked the brother if the general authorities took the sacrament today. He said yes. Well I said if it is good for them then it is good for the rest of us to take sacrament on fast sundays.

Basically, the way I interpret how the church tells us to do things: "Do what you want. We believe God commanded us to do certain things, and if you believe in God's power, you'd probably make the same decisions as us, but we believe in agency, so we won't force anyone to do anything." The church would probably restrain you from doing things, like bringing a gun to general conference or punching a grandma in the face, but we try not to force anyone to do anything. If you don't want to wish Edna a happy 85th birthday, we won't make you. Restraint=acceptable in some instances. Constraint=never cool.

@@jayakron3076 actually, nothing in the temple is salvific for you. The only salvific ordinances done in the temple are for deceased people. You don't need to go to the temple in order to be saved. Tithing is a choice. A personal decision. And yes, it affects temple attendance, but not your salvation. Those who are excommunicated fall into two camps, as far as I can tell: those who wish to be removed from the church records and those who are preaching doctrine that's not what we believe. Speaking of accuracy, your accusations are inaccurate, so take a look in the mirror if you want to shame or besmirch anyone for being misinformed.

@@jayakron3076 show me where it says that. That’s not true. The only salvific ordinances are baptism by water and baptism by fire, AKA the Holy Ghost. Those who don’t get baptized before their deaths are baptized by proxy in the temple. I think you’re confused about what salvation means. According to our beliefs, almost everyone will be saved by the sacrifice of Jesus Christ. The only people who won’t be saved are those who refuse it. And even those who fall away or refuse in this life will have another opportunity in the spirit world, with perfect knowledge of the Plan of Salvation. I think you’re confusing “salvation” and “exaltation.” Exaltation is being able to progress in the next life. While it’s unclear who will qualify for exaltation (*this* is the first part that’s according to my understanding), it’ll be based on a person’s ability and desire to continue learning and growing throughout this life, as well as their righteous endeavors in whatever goodness they find in this life.

@@jayakron3076 I believe I know what my own faith believes and what happens in temples much better than you. You sound like you’ve been reading anti-LDS propaganda. I’m being 100% honest, which is why it’s so frustrating when someone makes false claims on one of my comments. You don’t have to like us. You can hate us. But it’s not very Christlike to attack someone living life as best they can.

@@jayakron3076 again, you’re confusing salvation with exaltation. When it says, “and every other ordinance necessary for salvation,” I believe it’s talking about baptism for the dead. They can’t be saved unless we baptize by proxy and they (or their spirit) accept the baptism. Access to the temple allows you to be sealed with your family, but that’s not necessary for salvation, as far as I know, and I am a member, after all. Living eternally and in some degree of incomprehensible happiness is salvation. Exaltation, on the other hand, includes progressing eternally and being able to be in the presence of the Father. It also means being with your family. Even still, you don’t need to attend the temple to receive those ordinances. You can be endowed and sealed by proxy in the spirit world. So no, I don’t believe you’re being fair to the church. Besides, temple worthiness is self-reported, although I’d be much more worried about the consequences of being so dishonest than the consequences of not going through the temple. “In the Church, an ordinance is a sacred, formal act or ceremony performed by the authority of the priesthood. Some ordinances are essential to our exaltation. They include baptism, confirmation, ordination to the Melchizedek Priesthood (for men), the temple endowment, and the marriage sealing. With each of these ordinances, we enter into solemn covenants with the Lord.” -Ordinances Overview, church website “Because Mormons believe that everyone must receive certain ordinances to be saved, Mormons perform ordinances on behalf of deceased persons.[55] These ordinances are performed vicariously or by "proxy" on behalf of the dead. In accordance with their belief in each individual's "free agency", living or dead, Mormons believe that the deceased may accept or reject the offered ordinance in the spirit world, just as all spirits decided to accept or reject God's plan originally. In addition, these "conditional" ordinances on behalf of the dead are performed only when a deceased person's genealogical information has been submitted to a temple and correctly processed there before the ordinance ritual is performed. Only ordinances for salvation are performed on behalf of deceased persons.” -Wikipedia, “Mormonism,” subheading: ordinances, last paragraph. But I don’t believe Wikipedia quite got it right. Ordinances for exaltation are performed in temples, as well. We don’t want to be the judge of whether or not anyone deserves exaltation, so we’ll do those, too. We aren’t here to judge whether repentance is possible for anyone or any sin.

@@michiganabigail You gave inaccurate information about the church. jay akron didn't make an inaccurate statement that I saw. I hope you will stay with the church. My corrections are designed to chase you away from the church. You are an important part of the church. Fasting is a command. The word "encouraged" or "instructed" doesn't mean the church isn't commanding. It means we are free to choose. It means the specific command isn't a big enough deal for church discipline. You are right that God isn't a taskmaster but you misapplied that principle. God isn't a taskmaster because He accepts a diabetic and person with other medical conditions and serious symptoms not fasting. Feeling hungry or uncomfortable isn't something that God accepts as a reason. I'm also sure God accepts people who need to work on Sunday fasting on a different day than Fast Sunday. Maybe you will perform an actual fast when you have a blessing for yourself or someone else to seek. I didn't fast until I became an adult. I also didn't write about that as if I was following the Lord's commandments. I have the kind of work which must be done 7 days a week. I do midweek fasts some months.

@@seans5289 that’s really hard to gauge. The church doesn’t talk about how much they receive, nor do they brag about how much they have donated, and when it comes to an estimated amount received, it’s very difficult because their is so many variables. Members themselves generally don’t talk about how much they make, some members don’t give anything to the church, some members give more than they are asked, and some members occasionally give to the church. This causes an exact number to be difficult to point down. Some estimates say 7 billion, and others claim its in the millions. Keep in mind the 2.3 billion is only money they donate. This doesn’t account for the numerous large scale nonprofit ranches and farms, the church owns, thats entire purpose is to feed the hungry, or the amount of money the church spends on materials to help build affected areas after natural disasters, or even on local levels where they cover people in needs medical expenses, rent/house payments, financial issue, and much more. To put an exact number on how much the Mormon church actually puts into helping people is fairly impossible, and since the Mormon church never goes out of its way to brag about how much it spends on these things. We will most likely never know.
