Here’s my best credit card strategy for Q4 2023!
1. Amex Gold Card: Fantastic card for food! I’ll be earning 4X on groceries at U.S. Supermarkets and redeeming my Amex Membership Rewards points for cash back via my Amex Platinum Card for Schwab (it gives me a 1.1¢ per point value, so a 4.4% overall return on grocery spend).
2. Bilt Mastercard: My top choice to pay rent (1X), earn rewards on dining (3X), and avoid the transaction fee on most rent payments! An excellent travel credit card with no annual fee and top-notch transfer partners.
3. Discover it Cash Back credit card: Right now, this credit card is earning 5% cash back at Amazon and Target on up to $1,500 in combined spend for the quarter. These are 2 retailers I use a lot. Remember to activate the categories.
4. Chase Freedom 5%: This is the original Chase Freedom card that runs on the Visa card network. It’s earning 5% back via PayPal, Wholesale Clubs, and Select Charities on up to $1,500 in combined spend for the quarter. A great choice for earning cash back on my Costco runs! (I wish I could’ve used the Chase Freedom Flex, but that one is a Mastercard and therefore isn’t accepted at Costco.) Remember to activate the categories, too.
5. U.S. Bank Cash Plus: This one allows me to earn 5% cash back on TV, Internet, and Streaming as well as on Home Utilities. A unique credit card that covers categories not seen on many other cards!
6. Citi Custom Cash Card: This one allows you to earn 5% cash back on your Top Spend category for each billing cycle, on up to $500 for that cycle, from a preset list of 10 different categories. For me, I’ll be using the card only for gas stations to guarantee it earns 5% there.
7. Citi Double Cash Card: For my purchases that would normally earn 1% on other cards, I’ll be using the Citi Double Cash to earn 2% instead. It earns 1% when you buy and 1% when you pay your bill.

Q4 setup for me Custom Cash: 5% Gas Double Cash: 2% Fall back Blue Cash Preferred: 6% Groceries (Will cancel in April. I have too many cards and have a thick profile) Freedom Unlimited: 3% Dining Benched Cash+: 5% Gym and Streaming Flex: 5% Online shopping with Paypal Gold: Credits only (Will cancel this December. Only wanted the SUB)

Don’t forget that Costco Gas which is always cheaper will need to be put on a Visa of the OG Freedom. I have that card as well :)

Great Video Mark! I know it's been awhile since I've commented on one of your videos but so you're saying I can product change a CFF, CFU, or CSP back to the OG Freedom if I wanted to but you can't apply for the OG Freedom as a New Cardmember?

For this quarter, I am using the U.S. Bank Cash+ card, Discover It card and the Citi Custom Cash card for the same categories that you are. My catch all card this quarter is the Amex Hilton Honors card. For groceries, I am using the Chase Freedom Unlimited because I am currently getting 5% cash back on it until November, then I will use the Capital One SavorOne card. On Walmart online purchases, I am using the Capital One Walmart Rewards Mastercard. Finally, the Chase Freedom Flex card I will use for restaurants, PayPal and Sam’s Club.

Hey Mark, do you know about the new Business Gold Card benefits? They increased the annual fee to $375 but now provide $395 in credits. They added 4x on general transit and telephone service. They also updated the software and cloud system providers from select to ALL. They will discontinue the shipping and airline categories, but for now airlines are 3x points. The Business Gold card now has $240 Flexible Credit and Walmart + credit now too

Thanks so much for the content. I have a question about the Citi Custom Cash. On the cash category, lenders like Amex will only give you the additional points at traditional gas stations like BP, Shell, QT, Chevron, etc. I have used my Wyndham Earner Business Card at places like Costco, Sam's or at some pumps located at supermarket, and still have earned the additional multiplier (8x). On this Citi Custom Cash, would it give you the 5 % at non traditional gas stations like Costco or Sam's?

My gut instinct is that it it’ll get coded up as Gas (since even the Costco card explicitly mentions 4% on gas) but that it might not work since it’s a Mastercard.

Unfortunately I can't confirm as I haven't tried it ✌ However, here's what Citi says in their terms: _"Excludes gasoline purchases at warehouse clubs, discount stores, convenience stores or other merchants that do not use the gas station merchant category code."_ I suggest looking around blogs & forums for data points from other people. Costco is a 'warehouse club' and 'should be' excluded, but it all comes down to how the real-world transaction gets coded.

Chase trifecta here (CSP). Yes I get 3x online grocery. Diverse travel and hotel options. Amex point devaluations and Delta drama arent worth it. Cant soeak to Citi.

Just a FYI: If you are shopping at Costco in Mexico you can use any credit card. I have been in Puerto Vallarta the past six years and just discovered this. 😂

@@qbills - Buying Costco gift cards via a Discover card online does code as a Costco transaction when I tried it last year. 1. It varies widely from 1 year to the next. Some years are dry, others are moderate, and others see very frequent applications. There's no pattern to it. 2. I don't 'churn'. There's a reason why I have 50+ cards open.

Anyone can get the original freedom? I may do that with my unlimited? That's cool I guess it's good if you're going to exceed a category. Question... Do you think Chase is ever going to revamp the unlimited to differentiate it from the Flex and make it compete with other all around 2% cards? Right now, set up is Discover it, then the Paypal credit card. But maybe if Unlimited changes... I'll have a 2% with a history. It sucks they're so similar.

1. Yes, 'anyone' can get the original Freedom IF they already have an eligible Chase card open that can be product changed to it. 2. I don't have a way of knowing if changes will come to the Freedom Unlimited. 3. Discover it + PayPal Cashback Mastercard = great!

Genuine question: I have no idea how much you actually make but being a credit and finance KZfaqr/guru, I would have to assume a good amount. So then why do you rent instead of own a home? You may not make enough to afford to buy a house upfront and in full, but you should be able to pay off a home relatively early, and wouldn’t that be saving you more money than renting what I can only assume is a mortgage payment worth a month already for the rest of your life?

Because I used to be a disaster with money & it took awhile to get out of the hole I was in. It wasn't until recent history that I became smarter, so now yes, I've become more focused on home ownership & am saving up for that.

Chase just sent me an email offer to product change my OG Freedom Visa to a Freedom Unlimited. Not going to happen. I had a Freedom Unlimited once upon a time and product changed it to a Freedom Flex Mastercard. Not Today Chase!!!

I thought a US bank card needs a US checking account? I'm guessing this is what you have? Because otherwise I think it's just statement credit... unless I'm mistaken.

That's correct. And yes, I have a U.S. Bank checking account. Regardless, you can still redeem as a statement credit when your card balance is $0. When it posts, you'll then have a negative 'credit balance.' At that point, you can call U.S. Bank & request a refund check.

The freedom flex is definitely going to be a workhorse this quarter! Me and my p2 have 2 CFF, an OG freedom and I plan to product change my CFU to another OG freedom. Between Costco, online shopping that isn’t Amazon and my car insurance premium due in December PayPal will be helpful

Hey Mark, you mentioned Citi DC for the catch all card. Chase Unlimited earns 1.5x, so clearly falls short on the multiplier. For travel redemptions, do you think Chase catches up or exceeds Citi in value? Generally speaking of course.

Earning rate = worse. It can only improve based on how you decide to redeem. A 1.5X multiplier gives the following rates of return when redeemed... = 1.5% on its own (cash back or travel) = 1.875% via CSP (only travel, portal) = 2.25% via CSR (only travel, portal) = variable via CSP or CSR (travel, transfer partners - potential for highest value but never guaranteed) Since I'm focused on cash back, the CFU falls short for me.

@@MarkReese Agreed, cash back is straight forward. I guess I was wondering if you thought all bank currencies were equal or how you would rank them. In other words, can Chase make up the multiplier deficit with a better travel redemption vs Citi, in your experience?

@@MarkReese oh, by the way, the Chase Unlimited has a 1.5% kicker on first 20k for 12 months for SUB. That 3% on anything up to 20k in a year is hard to beat.
