Just as an idea for how Yorick's 500 years could be explained; write him as constantly trying to calm the many spirits of the black mist to slow the black mist's expansion. It gives an Atlas like role that would feed off of what we know about the character.

Pre-rework Yorick was a meme from every facet of his being. So glad he is an actual character nowadays.

That big statue on his back is held by a harness over his shoulders which kind of communicates his burden; He carries the spirit of the Maiden and the rest, and the weight of that statue he carries as his burden is very much part of his story. I like that aspect too!

Yorick's voice in LAS/LAN is so good, the voice actor really brings out the sadness and melancholy of the character

Yesss, my main. I love you Skyen I wanted to mention about how I love Yorick's splash. Whoever did the art did a great job. It gives the illusion of Yorick being on a boat and the shovel doubling as an oar. The Mist on the left curls upwards, looking like the bow of a boat. The ghouls seem like a "sea" of monsters. Fitting for the Shepherd of Souls, ferrying people from this world to the next. And yet the pale, greenish skin with the glowing eyes and the hood makes him seem like a villain. At least, that's what I see with him after so many hours on him I think the reason Yorick isn't a "good guy" is because he's spent years of undeath on the Isles. His voice lines pretty much make it clear that he is depressed, and only fights so he can finally die. I do think that he needs more story development. Maybe with characters like Lucian, or Kalista and Ledros.

While I liked this video, I feel like it could have been more by including a discussion of the new voice lines, they reference some of yoricks connections to other shadow isles characters, and some of the more general lines really flesh out yoricks personality much more, and I'd love to see league do more fleshed out voices like this

I think Yorick isn't just a good design in terms of consistency, lore, etc, and shows riot actually making cool fantasies that people actually want to play unlike the old 'ugly' yorick, but also he's really nice as to how his gameplay and animations (and vo I guess) show his character, similar to Jinx and bunch of others - Riot are just good at this in general, particularly in the past few years.

Another interesting thing about your in my opinion is the way he does control the zombies. I believe his ability to speak to ghosts can be a fantastic boon and is what allowed him to survive, but transformed into a curse as he is constantly taunted by the black mist itself. As for controlling the zombies, it seems to be less of him ordering ghouls and more of him abusing the functions of how the zombies work, which is displayed well in his kit. Unlike Ivern's Daisey or Anne's Tibbers, Yorick cannot directly control The Maiden or his ghouls. Instead he acts more as a wrangler, taking advantage of the defined rules the zombies follow and steering them into a path he chooses. Which isn't to say he does this with all spirits of course, considering he can send them to the center of the isle without him, just an interesting way he controls the mindless ghouls.

i watched this just now cause i felt like rewatching your more recent short on yorick. you made this before i discovered you, either channels. i just wanted to leave a separate comment from my yorick rant to say i really appreciate that outro. that somewhat brief sorta real-talk about liking commenting and mentioning of patreon and such was refreshing. i don't really ever dislike any video except something that has some seriously offense clickbait/lie for title or racist/hateful shit but i also rarely LIKE videos. and i almost spitefully WON'T like a video if ASKED to like it. but imma like this video. because 1. its petty not to. i know i liked it. and 2. even if i dislike the whole youtubers asking people to like and subscribe, if that works, fk it- do it. i personally hate it and i can tell its not your favorite thing to do. but since i've probably only twice in my life made monetary contributions to content creators that i genuinely like and respect, imma do "my part" and try to be more supportive with the little things that don't even cost me anything. i used to be paranoid about the algorithm, since i likedthis one obscure music video years ago and then got FLOODED with stupid shit in my 'recommended' so i think part of me is traumatized by that lol but its time for change. and i especially respect that there was no "me me me me me me" vibes. so not just for you but for everyone that puts in time effort and passion into ccreating imma be more diligent with simple support stuff. I see your point but I respectfully disagree. Old Yorick was just the stereotype of a “creepy gravedigger guy” and while new Yorick has pretty strong gravedigger themes, he has other unique aspects that you talked about (necklace, back-piece, etc) that I think makes his new design way more interesting.

He has dialogue interactions with the mist that is trying to eat him as it clings at his back, and the maiden of the most even claims him when yorick dies ingame.which is my favourite part of yorick.

Crazy to see how far the videos have come in only two years

Hey, love the videos but a couple of things that might give you an excuse to use that buttery voice of yours more. I might be misremembering but you don't talk about their quotes anymore. Most if the champion personality comes from them, and Yorick has this somber, melancholy demeanor with a weird sense of humor. His conversation with the Maiden after he levels his Ult also tells a sad story of how he thinks he's alone in that battle. Which is just perfect for a toplaner. He literally makes his own team. And talks to them like a lonely farmer (or shepherd) would talk to their livestock. You usually ask questions towards narrative design and interactions and make suggestions and one I would pose is "what would happen if he met Lucian?" What short stories would be the most meaningful? Lastly, one thing I would like to see for you is design malleability and how Riot is handling their skin universe attributes. You know, how does he fit in this universe? Is Pentakill a good fit, why did he get Arclight? What skin do you want to see for him? What works and what doesn't? Anyways, keep it up! Love these during my busy kitchen shifts!

Awesome video, great analysis on character design and League of Legends art direction. This may be off topic from the video, but I would like to hear what your opinions are on league's characters versus those of other mobas such as dota 2. What design aspects does Riot Games accomplish better/worse than Valve or Blizzard? It would be an awesome topic to cover in a future video.

This is my sentiment about LoL's current character design ever since Kai' sa came out. Everything looks so polished and updated that it almost feels plastic and corporate. It's like they had to trade in all the charm just so that the characters look "perfect" now. It's also how I feel about the Kayle and Morgana rework, like don't get me wrong they needed to be upgraded, but they have less character to them like Kayles armor or how wrecked and twisted Morgana's face looks. Now they are both just hot angel girls, one is just chained and one has a lot of wings and a helmet for 6 levels.

Interesting fact even riot mentioned about new Yorick's Shovel is the pommel. The pommel is reminiscent of a monk's spade, a shovel monk's used when traveling to bury the fallen. The indents on the pommel were used to catch swords of attackers trying to harm them. Eventually these shovels were even weaponized. Since Yorick was apart of these monks perhaps this is a shovel they used since they seem to travel a lot as well use bury dead people properly. Also for anyone who thinks Ornn's spade he threw is Yorick's is most likely false, since Ornn canonically is 20 feet tall the spade most likely being as tall as him or slightly shorter being way to big for Yorick to use, Ornn threw the shovel to the east of his home Frejlord which is unknown lands hence it's shrouded in mystery. Perhaps he threw it so far east it wrapped around the world and landed in the west most land of shadow isles but I digress and we still know nothing about it. Great analysis of the new Yorick thinking about it now I do understand why you think reworked Yorick looks like a simplistic character design wise. However I think it's a side effect of Riot's rework team trying to appeal to the yorick fans and trying not to make an entirely new champion.

Yorick's lore concept as a spirit-medium-turned-necromancer is one of the coolest things I've seen, but it simply didn't live up to what I would like to see; as a morally ambiguous dark hero, sure it fulfills that trope pretty well, but I would've liked to see a sense of duty or purpose in helping the dead move on despite the Ruination screwing everything up. I find myself enjoying stories of good guys who remain good despite evil being everywhere to be more appealing than dark heroes, but that may be asking for too much and it might be too tricky to make a story like that

I do see where you are coming from. In terms of design and uniqueness having ugly and unappealing characters can help with "the standing out aspect" it doesnt help with identifying with and overall fandom of the character. In general league is a game first and everything else second. So the rebranding of swain specially, made such a strong twyin lanister type of characters that won over a group people that really just main him cause of the aesthetic (regardless of his play style in my opinion) So while I do agree that having ugly characters is nice, in terms of diversity points, it is bad in terms of everything else cause it'll make the champion just a super niche where he will only be played if broken or if someone really really likes the aesthetic. And riot have been systematically trying to repolish their roster to make sure there aren't any "filler" characters just to fit a specific archtype but rather there is a polished viabile champion for everyone kind of approach. Also in terms of the riot special of lore update and colour story and then 10 years of nothing, i think are moving away from that recently and will provide intresting stories for the blessed isles much like they did for the entire darkin race. Fingers crossed! I am not trying to disagree to be rude. I am trying to say that in most cases looking at champion from a "design" stand point first and then "overall role the champion needs to play in league" second isn't very practical for this kind of video game. I agree with everything else in the video tho. Keep it up please and more videos (your voice is super hot btw just saying)

I realy want more "ugly" characters as you put it. I'm also realy concerned about Mordekaiser, I like the wonky ass mordekaiser look we have now in a strange way but after the rework his gameplay just turned 180 on what I enjoyed about him and I was put off playing him so I REALY hope they make something good with this rework or I will probably stop playing pretty soon since the new champions don't realy do anything for me and most old characters I liked have been reworked into something I don't realy like enought to main. Nice videos, such quick upload rate too. I really think that Rito has more misses with female chacarter designs. They are too afraid that if they don't make females bootilicious the "fans" will be angry and not buy a ton of skins. It makes me sad. I still wanted punk Morgana to happen or ugly Morgana. She has a line about healed scars, but her model is pristine.

When i first started this game i was Just searching a character Who looked cool and Interesting, and then i found Mordekaiser, he is very Badass very edgy he has the spirit of a Tank even though he is not, he is a Metalhead therefoure he has big and bulky weapons and armor, like he is so cool, he is so Badass and funny, but the rework might make him even better tbh, like he is not gonna be Badass because of his cheesiness but rather Badass because of Just pure dark warlord necromantic epicness, that isnt even a Metalhead but rather a medival Metalhead, like the face of Blind Guardian, or three inches of blood, or indeed dragon force, the current Mordekaiser really needs this update, he can never be trully a Metalhead warlord necromancer of death and chaos with this design, if Karthus Yorick and Sion hadnt got there reworks then he would make sense as there warlord, like it would be hilarious to make them like Oh im Karthus a Crreeepy Skely dude, do you feel a chill?, and Sion would be like Im dead? So are you, and Morde would be like Mwahahahaha, you have can not destroy me Mortals! No one Will escape my wraith! And then Yorick would be like OK after your done killin em gimme there souls to rase mah ghouls, like the Shadow isles would have been the place were a bunch of joke villains live and do evil things bluh bluh, but nope, Sion is from Noxus, Yorick and Karthus are all undead shadow isles People and Morde is stuck there like Um Riot? What about me? And Riot is like we Will wright some lore for you and Morde is like but i dont fit the Shadow Isles theme!, dont worry we Will rework you, and then he is like, so be it, summoner.

The tragedy of Yorrick is that the voice lines imply that the dead he is raising is part of some horde/hive mind of the mist and that every time Yorrick raises an undead he is making the ruination stronger, and they openly tell him this but he still does it. The lines make him sound much more stupid than he should for a man dedicated to the end of the ruination

old yorick was like my favorite champion when i used to play the game more often. i loved how garish and halloweeny he was. his moaning dramatic voice proclaiming you will remember yorick mori. his super stupid ability kit at the time too. he was never loved by riot after he came out, and was only ever important when he broke the meta a couple of times and was too much of an unbalanced lane bully. i think a lot people liked how ugly sion and urgot were more than yorick, but yorick was cool and ugly to me. i am completely biased of course and have no good reason other than i like his design and abilities back then. he truly did feel out of place even back then. the new yorick is nice as you said, but he is, also as you said, kinda boring. he doesnt hobble around anymore. his ghouls all look the same. i thought the maiden of the mist was a really cool idea though, instead of how buggy his old ultimate was. but his aesthetics werent grody dirty coroner of dead people anymore. i miss league back in the day for how simple a story for a character could be. there didnt need to be this grand interconnecting story for every single character. sometimes you just had weirdoes out and about on runeterra with no real explanation. im truly warped by nostalgia, but i dont care. hopefully one day riot makes an interestingly ugly character again.

I wouldn't say that Yorrick is really morally ambitious. I'd say he has a lot of common sense, especially if his colour story is the only time he makes a call that leads to someone's death. He's not wrong at all, and no one HAS to give up their own life for someone else, and that's true of everyday people. Someone who has a power that could potentially save people down the line? You'd be a fool to think they shouldn't prioritize themself.

idk in my eyes yorick is ine of the most objectively good and uncompromising good guys in league. Does he sometimes make hard choices to be able to pursue his goal? yes. But his goal, ultimately, is purely good, and he will first exhaust options that dont compromise. But i dint think it makes one morally gray or bad to refuse to compromise their mission when that mission is unquestionably good and selfless.

Mmm, the old yorick might've been more interesting, but I outright COULD NOT play him, even though his kit seemed fun and all. It just looked so... I wouldn't say 'ugly', but rather unaesthetic.
