My grandmother and sister owned a bakery in Kilmarnock during the great war they gave out their nightly leftovers to rehab homes for injured vets. Every Sat. she baked for our family enough to send home large tins for four separate households. Her Empire biscuits we called "German biscuits" Currently trying to find her recipe for war bread. Love watching your channel and with the pandemic extra time to think of fond family Sunday dinners. Thank you!

Thank you for the lovely videos. I am originally from Glasgow, moved to the states when young, now living in Florida. My mum used to make the most wonderful empire biscuits, takes me back and warms my heart. I don't understand any thumbs down? They must be a wee bit glaikit. :-)

@@mariekeehl9079 Whaaaat?! Omg, thank you! My dad & his parents also hailed from Glasgow, but came to the states when my dad was like, 5.. As kids, we lived in a 2-flat, in Chicago, that my dad+his dad went in on. They lived doooon-thee-stairs & we lived up the apples & pears, above.. (can't believe I remember that, but as I was typing... was if I heard them saying doooon... idk. lol) Was great because we could have such a good, close relationship w/ my grandparents, they could be near in case of emergency (both my parents were teachers) + never hurts having trustworthy babysitters right there.. AND.... it was just a great experience I remember; even tho I was really quite young. Nana made lots of things for us.. (some, sadly... i don't even know the names of, but can picture. She passed when I was just 9, morning after Christmas... & Papa, that following August) One of the many delicious treats, definitely was = Empire Biscuits. She only made them w/ a halved maraschino (or glace?) cherry on top & the icing ever so slightly looser using milk, so it'd start dripping down the sides before setting. Could be wrong, but think she used Raspberry Preserves inside too? Perhaps it was strawberry, idk... just remember the teeny seeds being in there, getting stuck in our teeth. lol Am definitely going to have to give this recipe a go.. (& many more I've found on her great channel) Will also definitely have to go check out that online bakery w/ delivery. Whooooo-eeeee, I'm gonna be in trouble.. $$$$$$ Meat pies HERE I COME!!! Hope they are nearly as good as I remember. Almost don't want to get them, just in case it ruins the memory of.... what if I don't like 'em anymore. =/ lol I know, prob impossible. WILL be sure to leave that black pudding... ALLLLL for you, tho! ;) Anyway, stay safe & be well.

My Father always called these "Lewis Drums" because the decoratively scalloped edges around the biscuits reminded him of the drum-shaped ammunition magazines of the Lewis machine guns that were often mounted on Sopwith Camels....

I am in S Wales, and have just returned from touring Scotland in my Camper van , its the second tour I have done, I love Scottish food and have just made fly pie for the first time today! The plot twist is I am a long time vegan so i adapt the recipe`s ! My partner however is not a Vegan and as a real taste for Buttries and Scotch pies and all things beefy, he lived in Frazerburgh in Aberdeen for several years . His 101 year old Grandad still lives there and he eats a lot of the fresh caught fish. Thank you so much I am loving this channel so straightfoward and soothing.

ha ha the Kenwood Chef, they are the workhorse of Aussie kitchens too. I inherited my Nannies Kenwood plus a multitude of attachments when she moved in with my parents. Not sure what age it is but it's but it's has a glass bowl and has had so much use in it's life. My Nannie even used to make bread with it. I remember it almost walking it's way off her kitchen table, making bread, lots of times. LOL Good thing is it's still going strong. TFS Cheryl.

In Australia we have grown up with biscuits very similar called "Kiss Biscuits ". Our mothers made them, our grandmothers made them, our great grandmothers made them. Custard Powder is usually added to the dry ingredients. The jam is usually raspberry or strawberry. The top of the biscuits are iced the same but entirely to the edge, plain white or pink, then dipped in hundreds and thousands. 😋😋😋

Thank you Cheryl for all your posts. As a kid in Scotland I remember buying Coffee Buns from the bakery. They were actually a soft biscuit with raisins and golden in colour. Despite the name I do not think that coffee was in the ingredients. Since emigrating to Canada I have tried many different types of cookies but never found one that had the same taste as a Coffee Bun. I am hoping you have a recipe for these and are able to post a video on how to bake them.

Hi Cheryl, Such a wonderful & traditionally Scottish recipe & beautiful looking biscuits you've baked there! They look so visually appealing. In our community, we too, have been baking a very similar biscuit for many generations, albeit, they're not exactly identical. Ie: Different size, varying flavours added, etc;. This reminds me, that when we're in Scotland, we'll definitely have to try these out in varying bakeries across the country, then work out which makes the best ones! haha Thanks for sharing with your viewers, keep sharing your wonderful recipes & take care. x
