In this episode of Frame Data, we’re going to take a look Game 4 of the Loser’s Round of 16 set between Zain and Rishi at The Big House 8. This game came down to a literal single frame, and it's a perfect example of how impactful 1/60th of a second can be.

Great insight! There were a ton of other small situations like that one which I would've loved to breakdown further, but I didn't want to end up with an obscenely long video. This entire set was rich with crazy interactions that could easily be their own videos, but I was looking to make the narrative for this analysis focused more on the single frame swings. Thanks for pointing that out though!

I don't think the d-tilt by Zain at 6:05 was a technical error. It seemed like he thought that Rishi would try to up-b into him after seeing the whiffed dair, to which the an appropriate response would be to cc d-tilt.

You're absolutely right, there were only a small number of successful throws in this game though! Keep in mind there were around 28 grab *attempts* in the game - so dividing that by the ~3.5 minute game would give us about 8 grab attempts/minute, which still seems like a pretty good amount to me!

The chart in the video (around 13:25) shows the trajectory path for a Marth getting hit with Dolphin Slash. So not to say that he would’ve won, but Rishi had the potential to live with no DI since there were frames where he was actionable after being hit.

I like the video but you make a few mistakes, such as up air being -1 on shield, which is only the case if you hit a tipper up air and hit it on the final frame before landing. In this situation it's more like -5. Also the dair vs fair analysis at 7:40 esh fails to account for the fact that Marth's fair comes out above him on frame 4, and therefore can't hit horizontally spaced opponents until later frames. You didn't mention the importance of the Shy Guy at 11:24 either. Overall the video is still excellent and was a very entertaining and insightful watch.

Just at a glance, it seems Rishi needed to wait slightly to hit the reverse Dolphin Slash, so I can't say for certain. Since this only came down to one frame, it's possible that he could've done the Up-B earlier!

turndownforwalt You said his standing grab is "the fastest in the cast," which makes it sound more significant than it is. Just an odd way to phrase it, especially for those of us who has less knowledge of frame data and matchups.
@aeroman911
@aeroman911 5 жыл бұрын
@@Kevin-xd2yv the only way your comment makes sense is if you paused it as soon as you heard the words and didn't keep watching. The very next sentence is that it ties with high tiers like fox falco and shiek, and about how the speed is less important then the range.

To be MIOM top 100, yeah, you need to be naturally gifted and/or grind super hard. But to be competent at the game isn't terribly demanding at all. My friends at college got pretty decent by just casually playing each other over time. I think at most we spent 10 hours each grinding tech over that time period. That's what I've always found so beautiful about Melee; it's a game you learn best by playing. As for the link argument: yes, it's true, link is fairly low ranked, and not many top players use him. but the top 5-10 players continuously say that you can still do very well with a "terrible" character. there are a bunch of relevant ganondorf mains in north america, some even taking wins over top 10 players. as for specifically link, there's a european player sixx who doesn't play awfully much, but is really really good and shows the potential the character has.
