I will say, having done several zero budget student films, I wasn't surprised that some of those outfits required active interference to be that bad. It's incredible what a good costume designer can do with a thrift store haul. Your comparison with Lynch reminds me of what I think is a Picasso quote, where he said he spent his whole life trying to draw like a child. It's really interesting to see our own stereotypes and shared mythologies garbled up and fed back to us by someone who does not understand what it is he was seeing.

This made me laugh so much, you really nailed why this film is so cringey yet compelling.

My friends and I used to have a recurring Terrible Movie Night and I first saw The Room in that context. It was so mythologised as a bad movie by then that I've never even considered what kind of film Wiseau was trying to make. It's just so far away from that dark, dramatic tone. Thank you for providing a new level that I can appreciate the movie's failure on.
