unpopular opinion... my hair was healthier when I had a relaxer and kept it straight. when team natural came in I did join in and my hair suffered. talk about knots on hair strands that I never had before and damage that I never had before. Mind you I went to cosmetology school and still drank the koolaid lol. while im not going to back to relaxers anytime soon I got the 7 day challenge a year ago and my hair is back to normal. I do my silk presses at home, I wash every week, no more twist outs, no more air drying and no more stand knots. Oh and for the heat haters I don't have heat damage. get that challenge y'all

With natural hair I have discovered one must develop a regimen for them. It’s so true about the twist outs. My hair was so tangled even after washing. I had so much breakage from ends to the top. I couldn’t figure out what was wrong. Until 1 day after washing my hair in twist outs it dawned on me that was the problem

There's videos on how to wash them. I too used to have that issue when washing them in twists. However, you just have to take time to take the hair down into being loose when going from twists. You detangling solution and its good. Plenty videos on it.

I just came across your channel today and subscribed. Love the education I’m getting here. I’ve been trying to figure out how to take care of my own hair because I can’t go to the salon all the time. I would see ppl on KZfaq use thousands of products on their hair and do natural styles and I’d be thinking that’s just too much product to buy and use I just want to keep things simple lol. I see you actually have the knowledge and your not just on here telling ppl what you think “works best” for you and we should try it to

Sis, we are on the same page. I wore my hair in twists for years and didn't catch it that it was killing my ends. I mean single strand knots and breakage. Because my hair is curly, I didn't see the breakage until I actually silked pressed my own hair one day and saw sections of hair that were missing. I tricked myself into thinking I was doing the right thing because I wasn't adding heat and it seemed to be growing super fadt. It was shocking. Then I noticed when I kept straightened it, the single strand knots went away, I gave it a good cut, and grew my hair again. Now, it is thicker and past bra strap. Heat stretching my hair has been critical in allowing my hair not to be in these styles that caused more damage than good.

I appreciate your content and thanks for sharing your knowledge. Please enlighten me as I’ve had this query in my mind for a long time now: is it at all possible that some (additional) damage could possibly be unintentionally caused by the hair being manipulated via the styling process caused by the hairdresser? There’s the combing out and detangling part, the round brush, comb attachment blow dryer and flat irons. It’s A LOT of manipulation in one sitting and perhaps all that damage wasn’t there until after they were done with being styled. I’ve had several experiences by several hairdressers where a worryingly amount of my hair was on their floor and I could hear my hair snapping and breaking throughout. 4c hair has lots of bends and coils so combs etc especially when handled roughly could be very damaging. That was years ago and I had major set backs then. Since then, I’ve being doing my own hair; no combs, just shampoo, conditioner, occasional protein treatment, leave in conditioner and jojoba oil in two strand twists and my hair is the longest and fullest it’s ever been which is now approaching waist length at the back and collarbone length at the front. Please enlighten me. Thanks 🙏🏾

You don’t have to wear it straight but it needs to be combed daily if it’s out. Any style that doesn’t allow you to come your hair is one you should only have in special occasions. If you can’t comb it without messing it up it will cause mechanical damage long term.

Hi Cyn! Her hair is beautiful and it looks healthy. Again, I know you know what youre talking about because my sister and I have always been team-no grease & lite oil usage!! Shes still straight while I recently (3 years ago) converted to locs. Oil & grease weigh our hair down (even with locs oil does my hair no favors). Now when I need a shine boost or condtioning treatment Ill do a hot oil treatment but not very often, maybe once a month depending on the season. What I'd like to know more about is your opinion on loc cleanliness in regards to the demodex parasite and how to maintain colony free as much as possible. From nightly head scarves to weekly washing, should we use a clean bonnet/scarf every night? Maybe spritz my scalp with a little clove water a few times a week? Periodically, after washing I like to rinse with cold clove water. It makes my scalp tingle and feel so refreshed afterwards. Thank you for posting such relevant content!

I'm having this issue now. My thick hair has thinned out so much. It has 11-13 inches of damage that needs to be cut and I've already had a lot of length cut. It was me wearing my hair wet with a ton of products and crochet braids. Im going back to rollers and blow drying. Im tried to slowly cut the damage but forget that... i can't keep seeing tons of broken hair in my combs. I wasn't shampooing my hair correctly either following some of the youtube natural hair videos.

Hi .. just seen your video which was very interesting to me.. I think your saying that silk presses are better for the hair ? And this is an option I'm about to try I just need to find someone I can trust with my hair in London! I've always found twists tangled the ends of my hair. I lose a lot of hair too which I find complexing since I've never done twist outs they dont suit me,. I like beehives for work. It depends on your hair! If it can handle heat. For example, I have naturally fine hair, this doesn’t mean thin, but each shaft isn’t very thick, also, high porosity hair, which means it drys out as quickly as it absorbs moisture. The combination of these two things mean my hair doesn’t do well with heat (and this is coming from someone who used to regularly wear their hair straight, even going to pros for silk presses). I still do it now and again bc it’s cute or whatever but for longevity I avoid frequent silk presses/heat. Know what works for you sis x
